Social Drives Far Less Traffic Than SEO | Internet Billboards

This is an interesting debate. My friend Randy makes good points, but I?ve seen social beat SEO for our brand time and again. I?m interested to see what others think about SEO versus social ? I think you need a healthy dose of both, but perhaps not!

Anyone who has any type of online business needs to carefully consider the way they do online marketing.

Many businesses choose to use?search engine optimization?(SEO) to drive traffic to their website, while other businesses choose to mainly use social media to drive traffic. Social media includes Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

When a person types a query into a search engine (Google, Bing, Safari, etc.) and clicks Search they get a list of websites as their results that contain the query they typed in. Most users visit websites that are shown at the top of the list or on the first page. The reason a website makes it to the top of the list is because they? have very good SEO strategies.??SEO?is a technique that helps the search engines find and rank websites. Using proper SEO techniques greatly helps a business get traffic from the search engines.

versus

There are businesses that claim that social media drives more traffic to their website than SEO. With online retail, for example, social media may change the way people shop. This is because friends can easily recommend places that people should shop through social media, such as Facebook.

For this reason, we have decided to check to see if social media is the best avenue for businesses to take to drive traffic to their website, or should they continue using or start using SEO strategies for much-needed traffic.

Content Curator Brooke Ballard

Like many of you, Chief Social Strategist and Founder of B Squared Media, Brooke Ballard, has seen a fundamental shift in business due to social media. How do businesses take advantage of this? Where do they start? Is social media for everyone? In-the-trenches social media experience helps B Squared Media answer these questions for companies seeking to formulate successful social strategies. Using tactics developed in her yearlong honors thesis study, Brooke helps bright and innovative entities develop social strategies around content curation. Good content boosts trust and loyalty among customers. By focusing on "what is" (psychographics: values, interests, beliefs and attitudes) and letting go of "what might be" (demographics) brands can secure a closer connection to consumers and their buying habits. Simply put: Think conversation, Not campaign.

Softbank and Sprint say no to Huawei in hopes of getting merger back on track

DNP Softbank and Sprint say no to Huawei network equipment in hopes of getting merger back on track

In an effort to speed up an already contested $20.1 billion merger, Softbank and Sprint have reportedly agreed not to use Huawei network equipment within the US carrier's existing network. In fact, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers, recently told The New York Times that the two outfits have pledged to remove Huawei hardware from Clearwire's network, too. These promises are likely a reaction to Congress' security concerns, which saw Huawei exiled from America's first responder network back in October. While Rogers is happy with Softbank and Sprint's new game plan, this deal is far from done. The two firms still need to make it past the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, which reviews national security risks connected to business transactions. Until then, Dan Hesse may wanna hold off on any extracurricular activities.

Hands-on with Katamari Damacy creator's crazy 16-button game controller (video)

DNP Special 16button controller gets demoed with Katamari Damacy's creator's new game

You don't often see a video game specifically designed for a 16-button bespoke controller and for a special one-time party, but that's exactly what Keita Takahashi has done with Tenya Wanya Teens. If that name sounds familiar, it's because Takahashi is responsible for the enormously popular game franchise that is Katamari Damacy along with cult favorite Noby Noby Boy. Teens is his first foray as an independent creator under Uvula, a studio he formed with his wife Asuka Sakai, and is a result of a collaboration with event organizers Wild Rumpus and video game website Venus Patrol. As for the party in question, it's one that is being held concurrently with the 2013 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, which is where we saw the controllers and the game in action.

As you can see above, the controller looks a lot like a modified arcade stick. A hand-made effort by programmer George Buckenham, both boxes were built in about five days for around 200£ ($302.50) each. According to Buckenham, the easiest part was assembling the electronics; it was the plywood housing that took him awhile to master. As for the game, Tenya Wanya Teens is a highly whimsical affair that is described as "a coming-of-age tale about love, hygiene, monsters and finding discarded erotic magazines in the woods." Tasks include peeing in the shower, punching monsters and taking on grizzly bears.

Syria troops, rebels clash in northern Damascus

(AP) ? Syrian government troops fought fierce battles with rebels on Wednesday for control of key neighborhoods in the north of Damascus, President Bashar Assad's seat of power, residents and activists said.

Also in the Syrian capital, a European Union staff member was killed in a rocket attack in an opposition stronghold south of the capital, the EU said.

Opposition fighters trying to topple Assad have been trying to take Damascus for weeks, battering regime checkpoints and military bases in the heavily fortified capital. They have also fired mortars into residential districts and into the capital's main football stadium, sowing fear among residents.

Both sides see Damascus as the ultimate prize in the civil war.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Wednesday's clashes were concentrated in the capital's neighborhoods of Jobar and Barzeh.

A resident in the area said shelling overnight "shook apartments" and terrified the inhabitants. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was afraid for his safety.

Clashes subsided by early Wednesday but sporadic gunfire could still be heard in the contested districts.

A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Khan Sheih neighborhood, west of Damascus, the Observatory said. The Britain-based activist group also said fierce clashes broke out after the blast but had no immediate reports of casualties.

Fighting also raged in other Syrian cities, including in Homs, where the regime pounded rebel positions with artillery and carried out several airstrikes on the Baba Amr district, a former rebel stronghold which the opposition has tried to recapture in the past days.

In Brussels, the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said a policy officer with the European delegation in Syria was killed on Tuesday in the Damascus suburb of Daraya. It was the first death in the Syrian civil war of an EU employee.

Ahmad Shihadeh, 32, had worked for the EU for five years, a spokesman for Ashton said Wednesday. He said Shihadeh had lived in Daraya, a suburb of Damascus that has been one of the main battlefields in the capital.

Ashton said he "died while providing humanitarian help to the community of Daraya," Ashton said. "Ahmad was known for his courage and selflessness."

Ashton took the occasion to call for an end to the conflict, which started in March 2011 as peaceful protests against Assad's authoritarian rule. The revolt turned into civil war after some opposition supporters took up arms the fight back a harsh government crackdown on dissent.

"As we approach the second anniversary of the uprising in Syria, I call again on all sides to take urgent steps to end the violence, which has led to the deaths of some 100,000 innocent citizens and over one million refugees seeking shelter in neighboring countries," she said.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the 2-year-old conflict and four millions Syrians were driven from their homes by the fighting, according to United Nations' assessment.

Tip Top ad ruled okay - Stuff

A Tip Top advert showing a man giving a boy an icecream in the street has been found to meet advertising rules.

A complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority said the icecream advert "inappropriately promotes a young child on the street accepting an icecream from a strange man in a truck".

It was promoting dangerous and risky behaviour, and sending the wrong message to children.

In the advert a children's television presenter beside a Tip Top truck says he is going to surprise a boy with a free icecream at the boy's parents' request. The boy and his family are led around the side of the truck and the boy is given an icecream.

The majority of the advertising complaints board said the circumstances fell short of showing a child consorting with a stranger or behaving in an unsafe way.

The boy had been made aware his parents had organised for the icecream to be delivered as a birthday surprise.

The board minority considered that while an adult watching the advert may see the parents had been involved, a child may take a different impression.

A child watching may only see a stranger giving an icecream to a child, which reached the threshold for a breach of the advertising code regarding consorting with strangers and behaving in an unsafe way.?

No Google Glasses allowed, declares dive bar

Google?s high-tech augmented reality ?Project Glass? spectacles are still in development, and not available for purchase. But Seattle?s 5 Point Cafe is getting ahead of the game ? and fueling a debate over privacy ? by banning the devices from the bar in advance.

The 5 Point posted this message on its Facebook page this week: ?For the record, The 5 Point is the first Seattle business to ban in advance Google Glasses. And a** kickings will be encouraged for violators.?

Why is the 5 Point doing this?

?I?m a thought leader,? jokes Dave Meinert, owner of the 5 Point, speaking on the Luke Burbank Show at GeekWire news partner KIRO-FM Friday morning. ?First you have to understand the culture of the 5 Point, which is a sometimes seedy, maybe notorious place. People want to go there and be not known ... and definitely don?t want to be secretly filmed or videotaped and immediately put on the Internet.?

He admits, ?Part of this is a joke, to be funny on Facebook, and get reaction. But part of it?s serious, because we don?t let people film other people or take photos unwanted of people in the bar, because it is kind of a private place that people go.?

Meinert notes that the 5 Point is near Amazon, and acknowledges that ?tech geeks? have been known to patronize the bar. ?It?s OK if you wear them,? he says. ?I just don?t want them worn inside.?

Presumably this rule would apply to Seattle?s notorious Creepy Cameraman, too.

Check out the original post on GeekWire for Luke Burbank?s full interview with Meinert. See KIRO Radio for more.

Scientists focus on another Sandy loss _ lab mice

This Jan. 18, 2013 photo provided by the NYU Langone Medical Center shows genetically engineered mice used to model human diseases in a cage with nesting material in a research building at the hospital's complex in New York. During Superstorm Sandy on Oct. 29, 2012, a storm surge flooded the basement housing some 7,000 cages of mice used for studying cancer, diabetes, brain development and other health issues. Each cage held up to five of the little rodents, and even four months later, nobody knows exactly how many perished. (AP Photo/New York University)

(AP) ? It was one of the most dramatic stories from Superstorm Sandy: more than 300 patients including tiny babies safely removed from a flooded New York hospital that lost power. But in a research building at the complex, where thousands of lab mice were kept, the story had a sadder ending.

A storm surge into the basement swamped some 7,000 cages of mice used for studying cancer, diabetes, brain development and other health issues. Each cage held up to five of the little rodents, and even four months later, nobody knows exactly how many perished.

Now, about 50 scientists at the NYU Langone Medical Center are going through the slow process of replacing them. What they lost in a few minutes one terrible night in October will take more than a year to recover, at a cost of tens of millions of dollars.

That's because, for the most part, they can't simply buy the mice off the shelf. Most were tailor-made, engineered to carry specific genetic mutations to mimic human diseases and conditions like autism. Some breeds can be found only in a few labs worldwide. Others were too new to have been shared yet with researchers elsewhere and will take many months or even two years to recreate.

Besides the mice, researchers lost precious specimens and suffered damage to sensitive equipment from the blackouts and flooding from the nearby East River. The 700-bed hospital closed for almost two months; the emergency room is still shut down.

For researcher Sergei Koralov, the flooding meant the loss of about 600 mice. Gone, for example, were his animals that helped illuminate how genetic changes in white blood cells lead to lymphoma and those he used to study what triggers chronic lung inflammation in asthma. An experiment for improving lung function was also washed away.

"I was devastated," he recalls.

Koralov has contacted scientists in the U.S., Switzerland and Germany in an effort to rebuild his mouse colonies. Scientists often share mice with other labs, which comes in handy at a time like this.

But it's not as easy as just shipping mice to New York. The mice at NYU live in a super-clean environment, and those imported from other labs carry a risk of contamination. So scientists use them to create a new generation of animals that are quarantined and checked for germs before they enter their NYU home.

Not all the mice in the basement died in the flood; those in about 600 cages were rescued about a week afterward. Their handlers had put extra food in their cages just in case before the storm. But because of contamination, new generations have to be created from them, too, in sterile surroundings.

When no mice with the right genetic makeup are available, researchers have to start from scratch. Koralov works with mice that have many genetic modifications, perhaps as many as seven per mouse, and recreating such animals can require breeding over half a dozen generations.

In all, he figures it will take two years to recover the most complicated ones. But the storm has given him the chance to take a new look at his research.

"The silver lining of the whole storm, what little there is, is the fact it allows me to refocus myself," he said. Now he can "go after what is interesting to me now, not what was interesting to me two years ago."

Much of the effort to replace the mice is taking place elsewhere. The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, which distributes more than 6,000 kinds of modified mice to labs around the world, is working on at least 200 types for the New York researchers, said the lab's Stephen Linnell.

So what can be done to prepare for the next big storm?

At NYU Langone, officials will consider waterproofing strategies for one building that houses mice underground and they are working on "an aggressive evacuation plan," said Dafna Bar-Sagi, the center's vice dean for science.

A new science building is due to open in 2016, with one feature planned even before the storm: It will keep mice on the third floor.

Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, second from right, and Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, right, walk past two Swiss guards as they leave after a meeting at the Vatican, Friday, March 8, 2013 The Vatican says the conclave to elect a new pope will likely start in the first few days of next week. The Rev. Federico Lombardi told reporters that cardinals will vote Friday afternoon on the start date of the conclave but said it was "likely" they would choose Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The cardinals have been attending pre-conclave meetings to discuss the problems of the church and decide who among them is best suited to fix them as pope. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican said Friday the conclave to elect a new pope will likely start in the first few days of next week, signaling that cardinals are coming to an end of discussions about the state of the church and who best among them might lead it.

Cardinals will vote Friday afternoon on the opening date of the conclave, a vote made possible by the arrival Thursday of the last of the 115 cardinal electors, Vietnamese Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man.

The Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said it was "likely" the cardinals would choose Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday as the start date for the conclave. In the past 100 years, no conclave has lasted longer than five days.

That said, there is no front-runner in this election, and the past week of deliberations has exposed sharp divisions among cardinals about some of the pressing problems facing the church, including of governance within the Holy See itself.

Early in the week, the Americans had been pressing for more time to get to the bottom of the level of dysfunction and corruption exposed by the leaks of papal documents last year. But by Thursday afternoon, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles tweeted that the discussions were "reaching a conclusion" and that a mood of "excitement" was taking hold.

Vatican-based cardinals had been angling for a speedy end to the discussions, perhaps to limit the amount of dirty laundry being aired.

Aside from the conclave start date, Lombardi said a few items of business remain outstanding, including drawing lots for rooms at the Vatican's Santa Marta hotel. On Friday, he showed a video of the room in which the new pope will sleep his first night as pontiff; it features a bed with a heavy, dark wood headboard featuring a carved image of Christ's face.

Emotion-health connection not limited to industrialized nations

Mar. 7, 2013 ? Positive emotions are known to play a role in physical well-being, and stress is strongly linked to poor health, but is this strictly a "First World" phenomenon? In developing nations, is the fulfillment of basic needs more critical to health than how one feels? A UC Irvine researcher has found that emotions do affect health around the world and may, in fact, be more important to wellness in low-income countries.

The study, which appears online in Psychological Science, is the first to examine the emotion-health connection in a representative sample of 150,000 people in 142 countries. Previous research on the topic has been limited to industrialized nations.

"We wondered whether the fact that emotions make a difference in our health is simply because we have the luxury of letting them," said Sarah Pressman, assistant professor of psychology & social behavior and the study's lead author. "We wanted to assess the impact of emotions on health in places where people face famine, homelessness and serious safety concerns that might be more critical correlates of wellness."

Against expectations, researchers found that the link between positive emotions (enjoyment, love, happiness) and health is stronger in countries with a weaker gross domestic product. In fact, the association increased as GDP decreased, according to Pressman.

People in Malawi, which has a per capita GDP of $900, show a more robust connection between positive emotions and health than residents of the U.S., which has a per capita GDP of $49,800.

"A hostile American with hypertension can take blood pressure-lowering medication. A Malawian cannot," Pressman said. "Medical interventions might lower the impact of emotions on health."

Using data from the Gallup World Poll, researchers noted whether participants had reported experiencing enjoyment, love, happiness, worry, sadness, stress, boredom, depression or anger during the previous day. They also measured physical health and the degree to which subjects' basic needs were met. Security was assessed by asking if participants felt safe walking alone at night or whether they had been robbed, assaulted or mugged.

"We hope that by showing that this phenomenon is prevalent and stronger than some factors considered critical to wellness, more attention will be drawn to the importance of studying both positive and negative emotions," Pressman said.

She co-authored the study with Shane Lopez of the Gallup Organization and Matthew Gallagher of Boston University.

UN says 20 peacekeepers detained on Golan Heights

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The United Nations said Wednesday about 20 peacekeepers in the force charged with monitoring the cease-fire between Israel and Syrian troops on the Golan Heights were detained by approximately 30 armed fighters.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the U.N. observers were on a regular supply mission earlier Wednesday when they were stopped near an observation post that sustained damage and was evacuated last weekend following heavy combat.

He said the U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as UNDOF, has dispatched a team to assess the situation and attempt a resolution.

Video circulated by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims to show Syrian rebels detaining UNDOF peacekeepers in the city of Daraa.

The rebels, according to the report, accuse the peacekeepers of assisting the Syrian regime in redeploying in an area near the Golan which the fighters had seized few days ago in battles that led to the death of 11 fighters and 19 regime forces.

The Observatory said the peacekeepers being held by the rebels are 20 Filipinos. It said they would not be released until regime forces withdraw from a village called Jamla.

The U.N. force was established in 1974 following the 1973 Yom Kippur war to monitor the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces and maintain the cease-fire. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and Syria wants the land returned in exchange for peace.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned of escalating military activity along the Israeli-Syrian border as a result of the intensifying Syrian conflict, which has gone on for two years and cost more than 70,000 lives.

In December, Ban accused the Syrian government of serious violations of the 1974 separation agreement and called on both countries to halt firing across the cease-fire line. He also cited numerous clashes between Syrian security forces and opposition fighters in the disengagement zone.

In response, he said, UNDOF has adopted a number of security measures.

Till taxes do us part: Chinese divorce to skip property tax

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - At Shanghai's Zhabei District marriage registration center, officials divorced a record 53 couples in a single day this week - that's about one every five minutes - as couples rushed to untie the knot to avoid tougher tax laws on home sales.

There were similar scenes in Wuhan, Nanjing and Ningbo as married couples opted for 'quickie', uncontested divorces - costing just a few yuan - that would allow them to split ownership of their properties and sell without having to pay capital gains tax of as much as 20 percent.

Beijing last week signaled it wanted local governments to be tougher in implementing rules to curb property speculation - the tax on gains from selling second homes has been in place for almost two decades but never strictly enforced. Chinese tend to park much of their wealth in real estate as they have few other alternative investment options, and home prices in the biggest cities have risen for 9 straight months.

Reckoning that primary residences owned for more than five years will remain tax exempt, some couples hope that divorcing and dividing up real estate assets will allow them to sell properties as individuals, and not pay tax. Once the sale is complete, they can remarry.

"It's a practical attitude," said Li Li, managing director of International Strategic Group, a real estate consultancy in Shanghai. "It's strange, but policy forces people to do it."

While homeowners and prospective buyers await details on how the tightened property rules will be implemented, the official Shanghai Daily quoted one unnamed official at the Yangpu District registration office as saying the rise in divorces was driven by unapologetic tax evaders, including a pregnant woman.

"I told all of them to come here again for remarriage registration as soon as their transaction is finished," the official told the newspaper.

Requests for city-wide data from the Shanghai civil affairs bureau were not immediately answered. The Shanghai Daily quoted Lin Kewu, deputy director of the bureau's marriage administration, saying the government did not want to release statistics for fear of encouraging the tactic.

The phenomenon is not new. In 2010 and 2011, state media reported that couples resorted to forging divorce certificates so they could skirt restrictions and buy more property.

"I know people who have divorced to evade taxes," said one man who asked not to be named as he waited outside a real estate trade center in Pudong on Wednesday. "But I think marriage is more important than property."

Microsoft Research brings mid-air multitouch to Kinect (video)

Microsoft research project shows hand gesture control

Shortly after the Kinect SDK first launched, it spawned a number of inspired efforts from researchers to make it do more than just track your body. Microsoft Research finally seems to be catching up to its own tech, as it just flaunted a recent project that allows fine-tuned gesture control, thanks to a newly developed talent for the motion sensing device to read whether your hand is open or closed. That let the team simulate multitouch-like capability on a PC as they air-painted basic images and manipulated Bing maps by varying their hand states. The hardware used doesn't appear to be stock, so whether such new capability entails a rumored new version of the Kinect that may or may not appear on a (rumored) future Xbox, we'll leave for you to decide.

Struggling LA picks new mayor in low-profile race

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa smiles at media after voting Tuesday March 5, 2013 in Los Angeles. Los Angeles voters are going to the polls to choose a new mayor. Polls show a tight contest between Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel in the race to replace term-limited Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. An expected low turnout makes surprises more likely, boosting the chances of Democratic Councilwoman Jan Perry and Republican Kevin James, a former prosecutor and radio talk show host. If no one gets more than 50 percent of the vote, then the top two candidates will face each other in a May runoff. (AP Photo/Nick Ut )

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? City Hall is nearly broke ? and for many, is broken. The airport is an embarrassment. Freeways are clogged. And potholes, cracked sidewalks and untended trees infest many neighborhoods.

There are plenty of problems to solve in Los Angeles, but voters have been mostly indifferent about Tuesday's race for mayor. No single issue or candidate has seized their attention, much less their imaginations, in the contest to succeed outgoing Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa.

The likely outcome in the heavily Democratic city will send two City Hall regulars, Eric Garcetti, 42, and Wendy Greuel, 51, to a May 21 runoff, since it's unlikely any candidate will clear the majority needed to win outright Tuesday.

But in a race with little drama, a turnout that could dip below 20 percent could produce surprises, possibly opening the way for Democratic Councilwoman Jan Perry, 57, or former prosecutor Kevin James, 49, a Republican, to slip into the two-person runoff. Former technology executive Emanuel Pleitez, 30, is a longshot.

The latest polling suggests many voters are wavering.

The city could elect its first woman mayor (Greuel, the city controller, or Perry), the first openly gay one (James), or its first Jewish one (Perry or Garcetti, a city councilman). But the five leading candidates have dueled over issues more commonplace than of historical importance ? ailing schools, a looming deficit, 10.2 percent unemployment and how to stop rising pension and health care costs from snatching money from street repairs and other services.

"The same career politicians that caused our city's problems now promise they can solve them," says James, who's positioned himself as an outsider eager to upend the status quo at City Hall.

Villaraigosa's 2005 election made him Los Angeles' first Hispanic mayor since 1872, but this year's contest has followed a more familiar pattern. Angelenos are known to give local politics a collective shrug ? even turnout in Villaraigosa's closely contested primary in 2005 failed to reach 30 percent.

The mayor was re-elected in 2009 with a meager 152,000 votes, in a city of nearly 4 million people. He leaves office midyear.

The Los Angeles mayor presides over a budget that rises above $7 billion, but it's a notoriously weak office hemmed in by a powerful City Council. Unlike other big cities like New York, the Los Angeles mayor cannot directly appoint the head of schools or police.

Dragon delivers a load of science to ISS

NASA

The Dragon capsule has begun its scheduled three-week-long stay at the orbiting space station.

By Miriam Kramer
Space.com

The International Space Station is now home to more than 1,200 pounds (544 kilograms) of supplies delivered by an unmanned, privately built space capsule that reached the orbiting science laboratory on Sunday.

Among the goods SpaceX's Dragon capsule transported to the station were science experiments primed and ready for the six international residents of the space station.

"Dragon is scheduled to return to Earth on March 25, bringing home nearly double the amount of supplies it brought up, about 2,668 pounds (1,210 kilograms)," NASA officials said in a statement. "Returning investigation samples will demonstrate how life in microgravity affects the growth of plant seedlings, changes to the human body, the behavior of semiconductors and detergents, and more."

Some of the experiments will only stay on board for three weeks, making a round trip back to Earth with Dragon?when the capsule detaches from the station. One of those experiments involves thale cress, a plant used in many experiments because of its small, relatively easy-to-map genome.

Scientists affiliated with NASA and the European Space Agency sent up one experiment called "Seedling Growth-1," designed to investigate how well plants grow amid stresses such as low oxygen. [See video of SpaceX's Dragon docking in orbit]

NASA

The Experiment Container with Plant Seedling Seed Cassettes (seedlings, inset lower right) is an example of the samples returning aboard the SpaceX Dragon vehicle for ground analysis.

"The experiment will study how plants adapt to micro- and low-gravity environments," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "Researchers hope to determine the ability of vegetation to provide a complete, sustainable, dependable and economical means for human life-support in space."

Beyond helping scientists learn how to grow food in space, the research might contribute to better agricultural practices back on Earth. Understanding how these plants react to a stressful environment could lend insight into how farmers could mitigate those taxing situations back on the planet's surface.

Some of the experiments sent to the?International Space Station will play a role in education, as well.

"Students from several California schools developed investigations to study bacteria, iron corrosion, battery performance and carbon dioxide levels aboard the station, all of which will be delivered by Dragon," NASA officials wrote in a statement.

NASA

The NanoRacks Plate Reader, shown here, will enable in-orbit analysis of research samples for certain studies aboard the International Space Station.

Personal product manufacturer Procter & Gamble sent up another experiment that will study how to better preserve toothpaste, gels and creams.

"Particle additives can make a product last longer by maintaining its consistency, but they sink and clump together after a certain amount of time, which can spoil a product," NASA officials said. "It's difficult to study these dynamics on Earth because gravity gets in the way, making the space station an ideal research platform for these important industrial processes."

Although Dragon's launch went flawlessly, once the capsule parted from the Falcon 9 rocket used to boost it into orbit, one glitch became apparent. A?thruster problem delayed Dragon's approach?to the space station by a day. The spacecraft is expected to return to Earth with experiment results and other gear on March 25.

Dragon also brought a few treats for the astronauts, with bananas and apples among the first items unloaded to the space station.

Denon Urban Raver AH-D320

Among the slew of recent Denon headphones, the Urban Ravers have the silliest name, but pack a powerful punch. Not unlike their in-ear cousins, the Urban Raver AH-C300, the $199 (direct) Denon Urban Raver AH-D320 puts a tremendous focus on deep, lower frequencies, delivering a sound that'll appeal to lovers of big bass and less so to audiophiles and purists. An inline microphone and remote for mobile devices, as well as a detachable cable, add additional value to the investment. If you're a bass addict, Denon has you covered.

Design
The design of the AH-D320, like its frequency response, is intense. Black and dark blue glossy plastic combine with large leather earcups and a padded headband to form a very chunky frame. The fit is not heavy, but the headphones do press fairly tightly and securely on the ears.?Regardless, they are typically comfortable, though you can start to feel some pressure on your scalp during longer listening sessions.

The cable is detachable, adding value to the AH-D320; it's much less expensive to buy a new cable than replace the whole headphone pair or send it in for repairs, and cables are often the culprit when headphones begin to malfunction. These bulky headphones are likely to command more space than anything else inside a purse or carry-on. They don't fold down, which makes packing them even more daunting.

The super-plush earpads of the AH-D320 are hard to categorize?they're more supra-aural (on-ear) than circumaural (around-the-ear), but they are large enough that significant portions of the earpads will touch your face and head, which is more typical of a circumaural pair.?

On-ear controls for volume and playback, as well as call answering, are easy to overlook. They're not inline along the cable, like most remotes, but are built into a dial on the left earpiece. Operation is simple enough?press it to play, pause, answer, or hang up, and turn it to adjust the volume.Denon Urban Raver AH-D320 inline

Call clarity is not amazing, partially because cellular fidelity is not amazing to begin with, and particularly because Denon chose to place the microphone on the right earpiece rather than inline on the cable. Your call partner will understand you, but putting the mic farther from your mouth isn't a recipe for clarity. A large but not terribly useful zip-up pouch (it has no protective padding) is included, along with a ?-inch headphone jack adapter.

Denon has a free iOS and Android app to pair with the Urban Raver. The Denon Audio app (there are many Denon apps, so make sure you go for the one with this name) accesses your iTunes music library and allows you to create highly customizable EQs, with very cool graphic EQ visualizers for the music as it plays. I prefer to listen to music flat, with no EQ settings at all, but this is a good way to get a little more sub-bass response out of the headphones if you want to, or add some clarity in the midrange by cutting or boosting, according to your preference. The app also includes access to local and Internet radio streams, and is generally a quite useful, free tool. For the record, however, you can use it with any pair of headphones, so it's something you can play around with even if you don't buy the Music Maniac.

Performance
On tracks with intense sub-bass frequencies, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the AH-D320 serves up some serious low frequency throttle. Audio purists will not be amused, but deep bass fiends will be thrilled. There's no distortion at top volumes, though it sounds like the drivers are just on the cusp of beginning to distort. It never happens, and it only seems to threaten on truly intense low-end, like the electronic drum hits in the Knife's aforementioned track.?

Bill Callahan's vocals on "Drover," as reproduced by the AH-D320, lack the treble edge that they need to cut through the mix. This is primarily because the boosted low-end not only adds resonance to his baritone vocal delivery, but it adds some serious thunder to the persistent drumming in the background?enough so that the drums travel from the background to the forefront of the mix, competing with the vocals for your attention.

The bass boost works better on tracks that have subtlety in the bass realm, like Fiona Apple's "Left Alone," in which the upright bass is low in the mix compared with her vocals and the percussion. Through the AH-D320, it jumps out of the mix in a pleasant way, primarily because, even when it is heavily boosted, it doesn't compete with her voice or the drumming, unlike on the Callahan track, where his deep voice and the drums vie for the same frequency ranges.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild", the kick drum loop is delivered with some serious thump. The high-mid attack of the loop is still there, but it's matched with an intense low-mid sustain, and the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the loop pack some serious low-end presence. Compared with the Urban Raver's cousin, the Denon Music Maniac AH-D340, the responses are like night and day, with the Music Maniac delivering much flatter response than the AH-D320's booming sound signature.

The heavily-boosted bass response becomes a bit more comical on classical music tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances." It doesn't sound horrible, but the lower register strings are imbued with such exaggerated low-end resonance, they sound amplified. The big drum hits at the end of the piece sound like the largest mallet in the world is striking a drum the size of a stadium. I'll admit, it's fun to listen to?it gives classical tracks a cinematic feel, but there's no way this could be called accurate sound. As long as the purists know to look elsewhere and the bass fiends know this one is made for them, we're set.?

The AH-D320 exists as viable alternative to the similarly glossy and booming, but more expensive and ubiquitous Beats Pro by Dr. Dre. If you seek a bit more balance and less thunderous low-end, without sacrificing the bass altogether, the Sennheiser HD 558 is a fantastic option, and similarly priced. If you can afford to go higher, the recent Editors' Choice Yamaha PRO 500 is a powerful, but balanced, luxurious option that is well worth the high price.

In this range, however, the Denon Urban Raver AH-D320 is a solid performer, with built-in controls and a detachable cable that add value to its substantial price tag?plus enough bass to make the low frequency addicts out there grin with delight.
