The liquid does not contain any memory of their shape, the ordered ice crystal has turned into disordered water molecules. Ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensates behave differently; these highly ordered clouds of ultra cold particles also approach a disordered equilibrium state, but they retain some "memory" about their initial state for a remarkably long time. This phenomenon does not depend on the temperature, it seems to be a stable, fundamental property of quantum physics.

Stopover on the Way to Chaos

In 2012, the research group around Professor J?rg Schmiedmayer at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), Vienna University of Technology, were able to show that they have found an intermediate state between order and disorder; the atoms of an ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensate tend towards an equilibrium state, in which their quantum physical properties are not visible any more.

This, however, does not happen continuously like the transition from an ice cube to liquid water. Instead, there is an intermediate step called "prethermalized state," in which the atoms remain for a surprisingly long time without forgetting about their quantum mechanical origin. "If we split the atom cloud into two parts and recombine them after some time, a wave pattern forms," J?rg Schmiedmayer explains. "That is proof that the atom clouds still contain information about having emerged from a highly ordered quantum physical state."

Intermediate State Independent of Temperature

Now the scientists have managed to take a closer look at this transition -- and it turns out to be remarkably stable with respect to external conditions. From experience, we are used to the opposite case: "Imagine a room full of air, and a vacuum in the room next to it," says Max Kuhnert (Vienna University of Technology). "When we open a door between those rooms, the system approaches an equilibrium, until the molecules are evenly distributed in the two rooms. This transition, however, strongly depends on external parameters such as pressure and temperature." The higher the pressure and the temperature, the faster information about the initial state is lost -- be it information about the initial distribution of air molecules or about the geometry of melting ice cubes.

"The prethermalized state of our atom clouds is reached quite independently from pressure and temperature," says Max Kuhnert. The experiments, which have now been published in Physical Review Letters, show that this state is characterized by a new length scale. This so-called correlation length is a direct measure of the quantum memory of the ordered initial state. It is the length scale on which the quantum physical properties of the atom clouds can still be perceived.

"This emergent correlation length is defined by the density of the initial quantum gas, but it only becomes visible in the dynamics of the transition from an ordered state into the prethermalized state" says J?rg Schmiedmayer. "The fact that this correlation length does not depend on the initial temperature at all strongly indicates that the prethermalized state is a fundamental property of quantum physics and has major significance," Max Kuhnert believes. A deeper understanding of this quantum state is expected not only to explain ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensates, it may also shed some light on the processes in the early universe, or it could help to understand phenomena in the quark-gluon-plasma created in high energy particle accelerators.

When physically combined, the iTwin Connect measures 3.54 inches by 0.83 inches by 0.31inches (HWD) and weighs a mere 0.11 pounds. When the two pieces are separated, the biggest danger is losing them because they are so small. iTwin provides a nifty leather case to store one half for safe-keeping. If either half is ever lost, iTwin offers a simple way to remotely disable the lost piece. That way, someone who finds it can't use it to access your home computer. The smart thing to do is to set the password when doing the initial setup. I was surprised that passwords were optional on the iTwin Connect. The iTwin Connect is a 32-bit microchip USB microcontroller with on-board AES 256 and SHA-256 encryption, on-board Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol to handle how cryptographic keys are exchanged, and an on-board random generator. When the connectors are "paired" during the initial installation, the cryptographic key is transferred to both halves of the device.

When iTwin Connect is plugged in and working, the two LED lights on the unit glow a solid bright blue. The lights turn red to indicate an error has occurred. iTwin also rolls out regular firmware updates, and the Connect automatically prompts the user whenever the latest firmware is available.

Getting Started
Installation is dead simple: plug the whole iTwin Connect device (the two pieces joined as one) into the computer's USB port. Doing so automatically installs all the necessary drivers and files. I assigned a name and password to the device, and I was good to go.
That installation process configures both halves of the iTwin Connect. At this point, I split the device and set the second half aside for safe-keeping. I just need one half of the unit plugged into my computer to take advantage of most of iTwin Connect's features. For the sake of clarity in this review, I will refer to the computer with the first half of the dongle the "home computer."

When I plugged the other half into another computer's USB port, the "remote computer," it installed the same software onto that computer. It uses the same name and password (if assigned) originally selected for the home computer.

The Connect offers a VPN service as part of its "Teleport" feature where the device establishes an encrypted tunnel with iTwin's servers. I can connect to a server in the U.S., European Union, and Singapore. There is an outside chance that a newly discovered comet might be on a collision course with Mars. Astronomers are still determining the trajectory of the comet, named C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring), but at the very least, it is going to come fairly close to the Red Planet in October of 2014.

"Even if it doesn?t impact, it will look pretty good from Earth, and spectacular from Mars, probably a magnitude -4 comet as seen from Mars' surface,"?Australian amateur astronomer Ian Musgrave wrote.

The comet was discovered in the beginning of 2013 by comet-hunter Robert McNaught at the Siding Spring Observatory in New South Wales, Australia. According to a?discussion on the IceInSpace amateur astronomy forum,?when the discovery was initially made, astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona looked back over their observations to find "pre-recovery" images of the comet dating back to Dec. 8, 2012. These observations placed the orbital trajectory of comet C/2013 A1 right through Mars orbit on Oct. 19, 2014.

However, after 74 days of observations,?comet specialist Leonid Elenin?notes that current calculations put the closest approach of the comet at a distance of 67,853 miles (109,200 kilometers), or 0.00073 AU from Mars in October 2014. That close pass has many wondering if any of the Mars orbiters might be able to acquire high-resolution images of the comet as it passes by.

But as?Ian O?Neill from Discovery Space?points out, since the comet has only been observed for 74 days (so far), so it?s difficult for astronomers to forecast precisely where the comet will be 20 months from now. "Comet C/2013 A1 may fly past at a very safe distance of 0.008 AU (650,000 miles)," O'Neill wrote, "but to the other extreme, its orbital pass could put Mars directly in its path. At time of Mars close approach (or impact), the comet will be barreling along at a breakneck speed of 35 miles per second (126,000 miles per hour)."

Elenin said that since C/2013 A1 is a hyperbolic comet and moves in a retrograde orbit, its velocity with respect to the planet will be very high, approximately 56 kilometers per second (126,000 mph). "With the current estimate of the absolute magnitude of the nucleus M2 = 10.3, which might indicate the diameter up to 50 kilometers [30 miles], the energy of impact might reach the equivalent of staggering 2?10^10 megatons!"

While the massive Comet Shoemaker?Levy 9 (9.3 miles or 15 kilometers in diameter) that crashed into Jupiter in 1994 was spectacular as seen from Earth orbit by the Hubble Space Telescope, the sight of C/2013 A1 slamming into Mars would be off the charts.

Astronomers are certainly keeping an eye on this comet, and they will refine their measurements as more data comes in. You can see the orbital parameters available so far at?JPL?s Solar System Dynamics website.

The Obama administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to strike part of a controversial 1996 law that bars recognition of same-sex marriage, even in the nine states where it is now legal, for such federal benefits as income and estate taxes and federal employee benefits.

?The law denies to tens of thousands of same sex couples who are legally married under state law an array of important benefits that are available to legally married opposite sex couples,? the Justice Department argued in a brief urging the high court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.

The justices hear oral arguments next month in two landmark marriage equality cases.? One is a legal challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act.? The other is a challenge to California?s Prop. 8, which rolled back same-sex marriage in America?s largest state.? Lower federal courts have ruled against both DOMA and Prop. 8.

Washington, Maine and Maryland voted last November to legalize same-sex marriage, and has seen hundreds of marriages beginning in December.

?Each time the Obama administration acts to support LGBT (gay and lesbian) Americans, it feels even more significant when considered in the context of Presidential history:? It was not all that long ago that President Reagan refused to help when many were dying of AIDS,? said Anne Levinson, a former judge and Seattle deputy mayor, and strategist in the 2012 campaign for marriage equality.

?President Bush embraced a platform and led an administration that vilified the LGBT community,? Levinson added.

In its legal brief, the Obama administration argues:

?Gay and lesbian people are a minority group with limited political power.? Although some of the harshest and most overt forms of discrimination against gay and lesbian people have receded, that progress has hardly been uniform (either temporally or geographically) and has in significant respects been the result of judicial enforcement of the Constitution, not political action.?

The Defense of Marriage Act ?targets the many gay and lesbian people legally married under state law for a harsh form of discrimination that bears no relation to their ability to contribute to society,? the brief adds.

The Obama administration announced last year that it would no longer defend DOMA in court.? The defense of the 1996 anti-gay law has been taken up, and paid for out of public funds, by the Republican leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops has also filed briefs in defense of DOMA, arguing that supporters of traditional marriage would be subject to attack if the law is overturned.

Ex-surgeon general C. Everett Koop dies

C. Everett Koop, who raised the profile of the surgeon general by riveting America's attention on the then-emerging disease known as AIDS and by railing against smoking, died Monday in New Hampshire. He was 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth institute, Susan Wills, said he died in Hanover, where he had a home. She didn't disclose the cause of his death.

Koop wielded the previously low-profile post of surgeon general as a bully pulpit for seven years during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

An evangelical Christian, he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

He carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States ? his goal had been to do so by 2000. A former pipe smoker, he said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine.

Koop's impact was great, although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy. He described himself as "the health conscience of the country."

"My only influence was through moral suasion," Koop said just before leaving office in 1989.

By then, his Amish-style silver beard and white braided uniform were instantly recognizable.

Out of office, he switched to business suits and bow ties but continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco is not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians.

Critics said Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

In 1986, he issued a frank report on AIDS, urging the use of condoms for "safe sex" and advocating sex education as early as third grade.

He also maneuvered around uncooperative Reagan administration officials in 1988 to send an educational AIDS pamphlet to more than 100 million U.S. households, the largest public health mailing ever done.

Koop personally opposed homosexuality and believed sex should be saved for marriage. But he insisted that Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how the HIV virus was transmitted.

He became a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other administration officials.

Koop further angered conservatives by refusing to issue a report requested by the Reagan White House, saying he could not find enough scientific evidence to determine whether abortion has harmful psychological effects on women.

Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath. In 2009, he wrote Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urging that health care legislation include a provision to ensure doctors and medical students would not be forced to perform abortions. The letter briefly set off a security scare because it was hand delivered.

Koop served as chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and as an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform plan.

At a congressional hearing in 2007, Koop spoke about political pressure on the surgeon general post. He said Reagan was pressed to fire him every day, but Reagan would not interfere.

Koop, worried that medicine had lost old-fashioned caring and personal relationships between doctors and patients, opened an institute at Dartmouth to teach medical students basic values and ethics.

He also was a part-owner of a short-lived venture, drkoop.com, to provide consumer health care information via the Internet.

Koop was born in New York's borough of Brooklyn, the only son of a Manhattan banker and the nephew of a doctor. He said by age 5 he knew he wanted to be a surgeon and at age 13 he practiced his skills on neighborhood cats.

He attended Dartmouth College, where he received the nickname Chick, short for "chicken Koop." It stuck for life.

Koop was by far the best-known surgeon general, and decades after he left the job he was still a recognized personality, colleagues recalled.

"I was walking down the street with him one time" about five years ago, recalled Dr. George Wohlreich, director of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, a medical society with which Koop had longstanding ties. "People were yelling out, 'There goes Dr. Koop!' You'd have thought he was a rock star."

Dr. Joseph O'Donnell, an oncologist and professor at the Geisel School of Medicine, where the Koop Institute is located, said he shared Koop's desire to focus on disease prevention.

"When he decided he was going to come here I felt like I died and went to heaven," said Donnell, who is the senior scholar at the institute. "He was my hero, and we worked a lot together."

Koop received his medical degree at Cornell Medical College, choosing pediatric surgery because so few surgeons practiced it.

In 1938, Koop married Elizabeth Flanagan, the daughter of a Connecticut doctor. They had four children ? Allen, Norman, David and Elizabeth. David, their youngest son, was killed in a mountain-climbing accident when he was 20.

Koop's wife died in 2007, and he married Cora Hogue in 2010.

Koop was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and he also served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He pioneered surgery on newborns and successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins. He won national acclaim by reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Although raised as a Baptist, he was drawn to a Presbyterian church near the hospital, where he developed an abiding faith. He began praying at the bedside of his young patients ? ignoring the snickers of some of his colleagues.

"It used to be said in World War II that there were no atheists in foxholes," he wrote in 1973. "I have found there are very few atheists among the parents of dying children.

"This is a time when religious faith can see a family through trying circumstances."

Initial reports had it as a gunfight between the luxury SUV and the high-end sports car. But investigators don't think anyone in the Maserati was?shooting, Sgt. John Sheahan said.

The predawn crash occurred at a busy intersection surrounded by some of the most famous casinos on theStrip, including the Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's.

The Maserati driver, the taxi driver and a passenger in the cab were killed.

Several people were taken to the hospital, including a passenger from the Maserati. Four were taken to University Medical Center, where spokeswoman Danita Cohen said three were treated and released. The condition for the fourth was not released.

The incident was the latest in a series of violent actions on the tourist corridor since the beginning of the year. Two people were critically wounded in a?shooting?at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay on Feb. 16.

A spokesman for the Las?Vegas?Convention and Visitors Authority, Jeremy Handel, said his organization didn't immediately have a comment on the incident and deferred to the police unit that patrols the tourism district.

Google opens their Maps SDK, lets developers replace in-app Apple Maps

Last night Google updated and opened up their SDK making it possible for any developer to use embedded Google Maps in their apps instead of Apple's Maps. According to Google's Geo Developer Blog, some new features are also included in the updated Google Maps SDK for iOS:

This version of the SDK includes support for ground overlays, gesture control and geodesic polylines.

Just like Apple replaced the original, Google-powered Maps app in iOS 6 with a new, non-Google powered version, the embeddable maps made available to developers in iOS 6 were subject to the same change. While users could switch to different maps apps if their wanted to, for developers who wanted to use different maps data, it wasn't as easy. Now it is, at least more so.

Since Apple's iOS 6 maps have struggled with point of interest data and overall accuracy, Google will likely find a receptive audience. If any developers are planning on switching, let me know how easy the process is, and how you find it works for your app.

Burger King Twitter account hacked, made to look like McDonald's

Somebody hacked Burger King's Twitter account on Monday, posting obscene messages and changing its profile picture to a McDonald's logo.

The tweets stopped after a little more than an hour, and Burger King said it had reached out to Twitter to suspend the account. A Twitter spokesman did not immediately respond to a phone message left on Monday.

Burger King, which usually tweets several times a week, said it was working to get the account back up. Typical tweets promoted sales on chicken sandwiches, or asked how many bites it takes to eat a chicken nugget.

But just after noon EST on Monday, someone tweeted via Burger King's account, "We just got sold to McDonalds!" They also changed the icon to rival McDonald Corp.'s golden arches and the account's background picture to McDonald's new Fish McBites.

About 55 tweets and retweets followed over the next hour and a quarter, including some that contained racial epithets, references to drug use and obscenities. The account tweeted: "if I catch you at a wendys, we're fightin!"

Monday's appropriation of Burger King's Twitter account was a relatively mild example of cybersecurity problems, which are causing increasing concern in Washington and for industry. Media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post have all said this year that their computer systems were breached, while several NBC websites were briefly hacked in November. White House

officials and some lawmakers are pursuing legislation that would make it easier for the government and industry to share information on how to defend against hacking.

Burger King didn't know who hacked the account, and no other social media accounts were affected, said Bryson Thornton, a spokesman for Miami-based Burger King Worldwide Inc. Its social media team and an outside agency manage the Twitter account, but Thornton declined to say how many people knew the account's password. He said they hope to have it working again soon, and will post a statement on Facebook later Monday apologizing for the tweets.

Twitter acknowledged on Feb. 1 that cyber attackers may have stolen user names and passwords of 250,000 users. It said at the time that it notified users of the breach.

Competitors were sympathetic.

McDonald's responded on Twitter that it empathized with its Burger King counterparts. "Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking."

"My real life nightmare is playing out" on Burger King's twitter feed, wrote Wendy's social media worker Amy Rose Brown.

LONDON (AP) ? At a time when many robberies take place at the click of a mouse, a group of jewel thieves has shown there's still a potential payoff for old-fashioned criminals willing to use disguises, planning and pluck to nab their loot.

Monday's theft of some $50 million worth of diamonds from the tarmac of Brussels' international airport is a "huge blip on the radar," said retired FBI agent Bill Rehder, who spent more than three decades on Los Angeles' bank robbery squad.

"You can almost liken it to the meteor that hit in Russia," he said, referring to the space rock which exploded last week over the city of Chelyabinsk, injuring hundreds. "These things happen so infrequently, but when they do happen it's a huge story."

It's also the type of story that complicates trends that have seen many crimes ? particularly those targeting banks ? jump from the world of brandished weapons and ransom notes to a universe of Trojan software and password-stealing computer programs.

In several Western countries, robberies have fallen as banks have installed bullet-proof glass, access-control vestibules and cash boxes rigged with paint or glue. Rehder said that, in the United States, tougher sentencing for criminals and societal changes have also led to a drop in bank robberies, which shrank from 8,516 in 2001 to 5,086 in 2011.

That trend has been echoed across the Atlantic, with the British Bankers' Association recording an even more dramatic fall in the number of raids, from 232 to 66 in the same period. Europe-wide figures also show a decrease in the number of bank robberies.

Meanwhile, cybercriminals have stepped in to steal some of the money their gun-wielding colleagues have left behind.

Global figures are hard to come by, but the amounts in play can be huge. In 2010, the FBI announced the unraveling of an online organization that had raked in roughly $70 million through a vast network of hackers, money mules, and front companies. Dozens were arrested across the U.S., Britain, and Eastern Europe.

ATM skimming, in which criminals surreptitiously rig cash machines with card readers and cameras to harvest debit card numbers, is another threat.

Doug Johnson, the vice president of risk management at the American Bankers Association, said that while the average U.S. bank robber could expect to make out with $3,000-4,000 from each theft, a skimmer made 10 times that amount with every successful hit.

Even as criminality mutates to fit the new realities of online finance and cashless wallets, spectacular thefts like the one in Belgium carry a special air of romance, Rehder said.

"This will catch the imagination of the public, no doubt about it," Rehder said, explaining that the use of bogus police vehicles to rob a plane right as it prepared to take off fit right in with the mystique of 1960s heist movies, released long before many of today's online criminals were born.

And security experts said that capers in the vein of "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968) or "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) ? elaborate schemes involving the surgical extraction of jewels, rare artwork, and cash ? were likely to keep popping up well into the information age.

"As long as we have hard currency and value in precious stones and precious metals, we're going to have people who will try to take it," Rehder said.

Or, as Johnson put it, "it's frankly difficult to create virtual robbery of diamonds."

Congress slams NKorea test, seeks more sanctions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress is weighing in on international condemnation of North Korea's nuclear test, and Republicans are calling on the Obama administration to revamp its policy and take a tougher stance against Pyongyang.

The House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution Friday by a 412-to-2 vote, calling for the U.S. to work with other countries to impose additional sanctions on North Korea. It also urged China to pressure the North to curtail its nuclear and missile programs and prevent the transshipment of technology that could be used for those programs through Chinese territory.

Washington is currently negotiating in the U.N. Security Council for stronger sanctions against Pyongyang after the council quickly condemned Tuesday's underground atomic blast, the third conducted by the North since 2006. The North said it was responding to what it called a U.S. threat and has warned of further, unspecified measures of "greater intensity" if Washington remains hostile ? possibly signaling further tests if sanctions are tightened further.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that more provocation, like another nuclear test, would only further isolate the North.

"In the face of this aggression, Congress and the American people, Democrats and Republicans alike, will remain vigilant in punishing the North Korean regime and strengthening cooperation with our allies South Korea and Japan," said Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, the ranking Democrat on the House panel that oversees foreign policy.

Republicans in particular are calling for stiffer action to rein in Pyongyang, which has made major advances but still appears a ways from its goal of having a nuclear weapon that threatens the U.S.

International sanctions bar North Korea from the arms trade and blacklist specific companies, but lawmakers complain the restrictions have done little to impede the North's weapons development. Pressure could grow for the U.S. to adopt new unilateral sanctions to punish foreign banks that handle North Korean funds.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., who chairs the House panel, said he plans to introduce legislation that would target the North's ability to access hard currency.

Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, chairman of a House subcommittee on the Asia-Pacific, took aim Friday at Obama's policies of "ineffective sanctions and empty threats."

"Pyongyang is now essentially a nuclear power ? a state that we have been trying to prevent," Chabot said in an address to the Institute of Korean-American Studies. He said the administration needs to stop offering "carrot-and-stick deals" to North Korea but did not elaborate on alternative policies.

Separately, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved legislation Thursday supporting stiffer international sanctions against North Korea and counterproliferation measures.

The bill, which has yet to be taken up by the full Senate, calls on the administration to submit to Congress by May 15 a review of U.S. policy toward North Korea.

Top Egypt archaeologist hopeful for future

CAIRO - The keeper of Egypt's archaeological treasures sees hope for the nation's future in its pharaonic past.

Mohammed Ibrahim, head of the antiquities ministry, likens Egypt's turbulent emergence from autocracy to the periods of decline that afflicted the nation on the Nile between the fall and rise of its three ancient kingdoms.

"We have passed through similar periods like that, even in antiquity," said Ibrahim, custodian of the pyramids, tombs and temples that bare witness to one of the world's oldest civilizations. "Every time Egypt passes through this period, it recovers very quickly, very strongly."

But for now, Ibrahim's ministry, is suffering from the repercussions of unrest that has hit the economy hard, driving away the tourism which pays his ministry's bills.

Excavation work led by the ministry has ground to a halt because of the financial squeeze. The unrest has also stopped many foreign-financed digs by deterring the archaeologists.

But the 59-year-old Egyptologist is upbeat: foreign archaeologists are starting to come back. And while the periods of decline between the ancient kingdoms could last 200 years, he expects Egypt to bounce back much sooner this time around.

"Egypt will be something new," he told Reuters in an interview at his offices in the medieval citadel that towers over the mosques of Cairo's Islamic quarter.

Head of Egyptian antiquities since late 2011, Ibrahim fills a post occupied for a decade by Zahi Hawass, who left office several months after the uprising that swept former President Hosni Mubarak from power after 30 years of autocratic rule.

With a doctorate in Egyptology from France, his career includes time as director of Sakkara, an ancient necropolis south of Cairo best known for the stepped pyramid that was a forerunner of the pyramids at Giza.

The job of managing Egypt's ancient antiquities is more complicated today than it was in Mubarak's era. The rise of Islamists repressed by the deposed autocrat has brought with it calls from a radical, if tiny, fringe for the destruction of pharanoic monuments on the grounds that are contrary to Islam.

Ibrahim says the issue has been exaggerated out of all proportion by the Egyptian media. Investigations were only able to uncover one such fatwa, or religious edict, he said.

Nevertheless, Ibrahim asked Egypt's Sunni Muslim authorities, including the prestigious al-Azhar mosque and university, to speak out.

"They all said we have more than one fatwa saying that pharaonic monuments are not against Islam, or Islam is not against pharaonic monuments," Ibrahim said. "So now this case is closed."

Recovering stolen artifacts
Ibrahim has also been trying to recover artifacts stolen at the height of the uprising in 2011. The greatest losses were at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, where some 40 artifacts went missing.

"We found about 15 objects, 29 artifacts are still missing," said Ibrahim. He takes pride in the fact that the museum housing King Tutankhamun's treasures has been kept open through the spasms of turmoil since the revolt to "send a positive message."

In an effort to draw back tourists, Ibrahim has reopened tombs and temples closed for years because of restoration.

These include Sakkara's sprawling underground Serapeum, the catacombs where mummified sacred bulls, or Apis, were buried. The Serapeum had been closed since the late 1990s. Six tombs have also been reopened at Giza plateau, together with the Pyramid of Chephren, the second largest.

He says the Grand Egyptian Museum being built near the Giza pyramids will be completed by August, 2015.

In another initiative to boost visitor numbers, Ibrahim said the aviation ministry would soon open routes from Red Sea beach resorts to Luxor and Aswan. "This also might encourage them to go ... at least for a day," he said.

In Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings, Ibrahim laments hotel occupancy rates have slumped to 17 percent in the winter months that should mark the high season for cultural tourism.

"Egypt is still safe and welcoming those who want to come here," said Ibrahim. "If you want to help us, the only thing we need from you is to come back."

iOS 6 passcode bypass discovered, could allow snooping

Once again a way has been found to bypass the iPhone's Lock screen passcode, this time for iOS 6.x, and involving a complex series of button pushes and screen taps to basically put the system into apoplexy. This particular Konami code of doom was reported by Adrian D'Urso of Jailbreak Nation:

Today, we discovered a method to bypass the passcode lock on any iPhone running the newest software update iOS 6.1. The method is a bit complicated and will allow access to the phone application. While hitting the home button will re lock the phone, the exploit does have potential to snoop through peoples contacts and make calls.

It's not the first time a vulnerability in the the iPhone's Lock screen passcode has been found; providing just enough functionality to make emergency calls yet not enough to get into the rest of the system seems to be an error-prone process. Apple, for their part, will likely patch it in the next update, as they've patched similar bypasses in the past.
