Miller and No. 9 Ohio St beat Penn St 35-23

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Fake. Hop. Dive. Touchdown!

Braxton Miller does stuff you can't teach, and No. 9 Ohio State is riding its Heisman Trophy contender to a memorable season ? despite the limitations.

Miller ran for 134 yards and accounted for three touchdowns a week after getting knocked out of a game, leading the Buckeyes to a 35-23 victory against Penn State on Saturday.

Ryan Shazier returned an interception 17 yards for a score early in the third quarter that gave the Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) the lead for good, and the Nittany Lions (5-3, 3-1) and coach Bill O'Brien had their five-game winning streak snapped in a matchup of the Big Ten's bowl-banned perennial powers.

Miller missed the fourth quarter against Purdue after a hard tackle sent him to the hospital with a case of whiplash. He declared himself good to go by midweek.

Was he ever. The Heisman campaign can resume.

The sophomore quarterback reached 100 yards rushing for the sixth time this season, carrying 25 times, and only avoiding contact when it was convenient. He also was 7 for 19 for 143 yards passing.

"I was so excited I missed a lot of throws," he said. "I was so excited to come back on the field from my injury. The crowd was energetic."

He added to his highlight reel with his first touchdown run in the second half.

Miller pulled the ball back just as teammate Carlos Hyde was engulfed by Penn State's Sean Stanley, did a two-step ? one forward and jump back ? to allude a defender, and then dived past another into the end zone.

"I think a guy just came in and tried to tackle Carlos and I pulled it," Miller said. "I don't know who was around me. My instincts just took over after that."

Officially, the play covered a yard, and it made the score 21-10 Ohio State with 3:30 left in the third quarter.

"We work on that," coach Urban Meyer said with a slight grin. "We have a drill. Make seven people miss and dive across.

"All I heard in my headset was 'Oh my God!'"

Matt McGloin and the Nittany Lions had turned an 0-2 start into a reason for Nittany Lions fans to get excited about football again.

It felt like a big game in Happy Valley, something many thought wouldn't happen this year after Penn State was hit with crippling NCAA sanctions for the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

But the Nittany Lions weren't quite ready to step up in competition.

"Offensively, we could have done some better things," O'Brien said. "I could have adjusted better. I could have had a better game plan."

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes proved their mettle at maybe the toughest place to play in the Big Ten.

"When you go on the road your defense better play," Meyer said. "You better take care of the football and you better be tough."

For the most part, Ohio State checked all the boxes, and got another great game from its quarterback.

"Their front seven was tremendous," said McGloin, who was sacked three times. "They applied pressure all night."

Miller's second 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter put Ohio State up 28-10.

McGloin and Penn State then rolled to an 18-play touchdown drive he finished with a 2-yard pass to Matt Lehman to make it 28-16 with 9:49 left in the fourth quarter. The 2-point conversion try was stopped.

    McGloin finished 27 for 45 for a career-high 327 yards.

With plenty of time to pull off a comeback, the Penn State crowd roared and waved pom-poms as Ohio State started its next drive backed up to its 8.

A couple of tough runs by Miller got the Buckeyes off the goal line. Then on third-and-3 from the 28, Miller hit Jake Stoneburner in stride over the middle, and the wide receiver was gone. The 72-yard touchdown made it 35-16.

"First I was thinking don't get caught," Stoneburner said. "Then it was just surreal. I've never had that long of a touchdown in that big of a game."

The Nittany Lions added one more touchdown, almost as a thank you to all of the fans ? and there were plenty in the crowd of 107,818 ? who stayed to the end.

Ohio State's season of what-could-have-been rolls on, back home to play Illinois next week. After that the Buckeyes take a week off, and then finish the season at Wisconsin and home for Michigan.

The Buckeyes could have been thinking Big Ten championship, even BCS title.

But Ohio State's decision not to impose a bowl ban last season, when the Buckeyes went 6-6 and lost in the Gator Bowl, before the NCAA weighed in on the tattoo-for-memorabilia scandal, led to Meyer's first team in Columbus, Ohio, being left out of the postseason.

The Big Ten will give the Buckeyes a trophy if they win the Leaders Division, a race which they have firmly under control.

Other than that, all Ohio State can do is win 'em all and hope for the best when the final AP poll of the season comes out in January. Though an idle December would make it easier for Miller to attend the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

"I just think he's an excellent player," O'Brien said. "One of the top five players in the country."

Two of the better offenses in the Big Ten traded punts for most of the first half.

Penn State turned one of those punts into points.

Mike Hull cut through the Ohio State protection and blocked Ben Buchanan's kick a couple of yards away from the goal line. Michael Yancich recovered for a 7-0 lead with 6:15 left in the half.

Penn State forced another punt, but a holding penalty on the Nittany Lions converted the fourth down for Ohio State and Miller took advantage. His 33-yard keeper got the Buckeyes a first-and-goal at the 6, and Hyde scored from a yard out to make it 7-all.

Intolerancesto food Might Impact Your Thyroid Diet | Healthuse ...

I realize thyroid gland crisis. Modern medicine had been can not tackle this Graves? after which Hashimoto?s Disorder issues. For several years Used to do lots of learning from your errors examining until eventually My spouse and i invented our ?Healthy Thyroid gland Diet? program.

You will find food you have to take away through your as well as there are actually foods that you can supplment your daily food intake. This may not be a diet or in other words that you?re trying to lose weight however some sort of practice regarding healthful having.

Not really every person can agree with the fact that there?s a link in between diet and a wholesome thyroid gland. My spouse and i challenge you to give it a shot for a couple of several weeks and also keep track of virtually any within how you feel.

Yet another thing prior to continuing, its significance to comprehend that a lot of (90%) involving hyperthyroidism as well as hypothyroidism originate from autoimmune concerns. Which means that your immune system is attacking your own thyroid gland..

One of the initial troubles I actually look into using clients is their current diet regime.

    INTOLERANCES
Can you notice ?gluten-free?, ?dairy-free? etc popping up in the health stores today? The reason being many individuals get off the actual ?big five?; gluten, dairy, hammer toe, ova and also almond and expertise significant alterations. To find the contributors, I always start off with an Removal Diet and this kind of generates very clear, neutral final results. You can even get a meals intolerance analyze (not allergy or intolerance, is actually different) done but they are faraway from correct. Gluten is definitely an famous foodstuff when you have any thyroid situation and also removing it truly is key. However , quite often, you would probably need to cut out more gluten.

CORRECT YOUR CURRENT DIGESTIVE SYSTEM KEEP TABS ON (aka GUT)

As mentioned above, most thyroid gland conditions are auto-immune illnesses. There are lots associated with lymphocytes along with other immune system cellular material within the belly, which protect against trojans, microorganisms, as well as other intruders. This is the reason most of the people along with thyroid gland circumstances furthermore encounter repeated bloatedness, propane, obstipation or maybe diarrhea. Dieting transform will help your own belly immensely. ?All disorder begins within the gut?, stated Hippocrates, the daddy of contemporary remedies and also I?m unsure why this may not be coached at school nowadays.

    MINIMIZE DEGREE OF TOXICITY
Take a look at your daily diet: ingredients, chemical preservatives, synthetic sweeteners (! ), excessive salt content, trans-fats in addition to toxic compounds hiding all-around your home. Drinking water level of toxicity will be HUGE throughout thyroid gland conditions; we increase fluoride based in the usa that may be now associated with reducing the thyroid; fluoride-based is thought to be leaching to the thyroid tissue conquering the particular uptake of iodine, therefore the production of the thyroid junk (T4).

    DETOXIFICATION
Your current hard working liver plus your stomach because this is the location where the T4 hormone (inactive hormone) becomes transformed into T3, the particular active junk which can be truly one that powers us up. Most of our body tissue want T3, not simply T4. Should you be taking Synthroid, you will be taking a synthetic version of T4 that will still has to be transformed into T3. For those who have a slow liver organ and stomach, you may not convert properly. Get performing a yearly, bi-yearly cleansing by simply fasting, juicing, and many others to give your whole body an escape.

    TACKLE STRESS and ADRENAL FATIGUE
This really is massive issue, especially with ladies. You?ll not manage to resolve your thyroid with no correcting typically the adrenals. The adrenals are also area of the endocrine technique and turn on when you find yourself burned out. I would recommend finding out about adrenal exhaustion signs and symptoms to verify if you will have them. De-stressing by dealing with some sort of therapist, life trainer, engaging in deep breathing, inhaling and exhaling, beneficial thinking; whichever do the job ? is vital.

    TAKE AWAY GOITROUS MEALS
in case you experience hypothyroidism. Goiter can be a material that will decreases the thyroid. It truly is within bok choy, brocoli, Brussels? plants sprouting up, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, radishes, coconut, me llaman dairy, coconut lecithin (often utilized as being a fluff in veggie food) and tofu. Preparing food these people reduces their own goitrous qualities but you need to nonetheless restrict all of them from the restoration period.

Our system has an amazing power to cure; only perform the correct natural environment as well as resources but it will surely do all of the checking for you personally. Discover precisely what thyroid gland diet regime foods to prevent as well as the ones that to incorporate.

The proper thyroid diet regime food items will become therapeutic your current immunity process as well as your thyroid.

Official figures showed Wednesday that the total debt of the 17 countries that use the single currency at the end of the second quarter was worth 90 percent of the value of the group's economy ? the highest level since the euro was launched in 1999.

The rise from the previous quarter's 88.2 percent and the previous year's equivalent of 87.1 percent, as reported by Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, is a result of the eurozone's economic problems ? which are making it harder for countries to handle their debts.

"The euro area economy remains stuck in a rut," said James Ashley, senior European economist at RBC Capital Markets.

According to Eurostat five of the countries that use the euro are in recession ? Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Cyprus. Many analysts expect the eurozone to slip back into recession in the third quarter of the year when official figures are published next month. A recession is technically defined as two quarters of negative growth in a row.

Other figures Wednesday pointed to a deepening economic crisis in the eurozone. The purchasing managers' index ? a gauge of business activity ? from financial information company Markit fell from the previous month's 46.1 to 45.8 in October ? its lowest level in more than three years. Any figure below 50 indicates a contraction in activity.

Meanwhile, a closely watched survey from the Ifo Institute found business confidence in Germany, Europe's biggest economy, confounded expectations of a modest increase and dropped for the sixth month in a row. Ifo's key figure for October dropped to 100 from 101.4 in September.

Germany has been the main reason why the eurozone has not fallen into recession. The country's powerhouse exporters, such as Volkswagen and BMW, have taken a slice of rising trade volumes around the world while its consumers have shown an increasing appetite to spend. However, the country's economy has recently lost its momentum as the debt troubles on its doorstep have weighed on economic confidence.

A shrinking economy makes the value of a country's debt as a proportion of the size of its economy worse. Over the past year, Italy's debt burden, for example, has risen from 123.7 percent in the first quarter to 126.1 percent in the second quarter ? that's come while its economy has shrunk for four straight quarters.

Greece's finances, though, are in a league of their own. The country, which is struggling to convince debt inspectors that it's fulfilling pledges it has made in return for billions of euros worth of bailout cash, saw the biggest quarterly increase in its debt burden to 150.3 percent of national income in the second quarter from 136.9 percent in the first.

The increase comes despite a dramatic fall in debt in the first quarter after Greece had successfully negotiated a deal with private bondholders to accept a writedown of their Greek holdings. The country's debt was reduced to ?280 billion in the first quarter from ?341 billion in the second quarter of 2011 as a result of the writedown.

But any advantage gained is slowly being whittled away by the country's deep recession, which appears headed for a sixth year. Interest on the debt, as well as continued budget deficits, pushed the debt back above ?300 billion in the second quarter of 2012.

In the second quarter of 2012, the Greek economy was 6.2 percent smaller than the same period the previous year and all forecasters think the recession will last for a while longer, especially as the country readies to implement even more austerity measures. Lower wages, for example, will impact consumer spending, often a vital ingredient of economic growth.

    World of Sighs (Private RP)

It had been four days. They had come to the settlement, looked over some of the people and gave out the one dose to one of the sick. There weren?t many here suffering from any signs of the sickness yet but where one had it others were sure to follow.

That was how it worked twenty years ago. The adults started getting sick. One in a small town, fifteen in a nearby city, until finally they were dying everywhere. Started simple, cold but with very achy joints. The joints started to swell, turn red. Then as it infected other areas the victim became disoriented, lost vision and in some case became violent. For some the pain was excruciating, nothing took it away or lessened it. Doctor?s in an effort to stave it off until they could find a vaccine, were dosing patients with everything they had. Nothing helped.

The adults started dying. Adults. Not the kids. Everyone was puzzled. Sure some kids died of it but it seemed to be quiet and painless for them. Others never showed any symptoms. Wasn?t long before areas were left devoid of people over 20.

It was happening again. Pockets of the sickness were popping up and people were getting anxious. The older population knew what was coming, they were the first generation to grow up after....they remembered. They were kids who fought to stay alive and now they were facing the same potential fate their parents had.

Four days ago though they had come through. Six people traveling together who said they had found a vaccine. The only problem, they were just doing tests. Only one dose per area with sick people. They came in to Valour Spring and were looking for one person showing symptoms that they could give the vaccine to. They would come back and see if it worked and maybe after that they?d come with more. Maybe.

Lilly wasn?t willing to take the chance on maybe. Two days before they showed up her right knee was swollen. She knew. She had watched her mother and aunt suffer with it when she was only thirteen. She didn?t need to be told what was wrong with her.

Standing there she debated offering to be the guinea pig. It was one thing if you were chosen but another all together if people found out you had it and you had no chance of being fixed. A vaccine offered hope to everyone else. Five people with symptoms stepped forward. One got the shot. Two of the others were run out of Valour Spring within the hour, one was found dead the next day, not of natural causes and the last vanished.

Her lips were dry as she watched the dose being given. ?Has to be a way....not fair...? It was all Lilly could do to stop herself from pushing the person out of the way and taking the shot for herself. The fear of the pain and suffering was almost too much to handle. She?d managed to take one of the workers aside and happened to get out of them that they were from Bright Bay, about a weeks trip from here. That there was a lab set up there and they had way more vaccine ready, they just needed to know it worked. She also found out that small areas were the last places they were going to send it. Took too long to get it there and no one really cared if these smaller communities died out. The goal was to get people to come to them, needing the vaccine and in return they?d all help rebuild. Her stomach was sick at the thought of so many small areas going without while they sat there hoarding what they made. It was worse when she thought about the pain she?d have to go through before she died and all because she couldn?t get to Bright Bay.

No vehicle, no gas, no way to get there in a week. The group had managed to get a cart and horse. She had no hope of getting either, let alone both.

Four days were already wasted as she fumed about the problem. It wasn?t till he walked by that it struck her that help might be possible. Lilly fiddled with her necklace as she watched him. She heard rumours that he built things and one of those things was a vehicle. Lilly just needed a way to convince him to help, a reason that he should help her.

She followed him when he headed back to where he lived, eager to see if the rumours were true and maybe talk to him.

Dogs Health | Paw Prints: Pet Wellness Month | Puppy Dog

    Monday, October 22nd, 2012

    * Consistent, high-quality veterinary care is the foundation for your dog?s overall health. . Responsible pet caregivers have spayed or neutered their dog. If your dog is intact, you are missing out on major health benefits, including a much lower incidence of uterine infections and breast cancer in females, and lower risks of testicular cancer among males. . Ideally, wellness exams should be performed twice a year, and dogs with special needs, chronic health conditions, or other illness should be seen even more frequently. Since dogs age at a faster rate than humans, many subtle changes can develop, and routine visits allow your vet to closely monitor changes before minor health problems spin out of control. Your vet will recommend what immunizations that your dog needs, and can also suggest any supplements that might provide additional nutrition to your dog. Developing a good connection with your vet will lead to long-term benefit for you and your dog.

    * Wellness starts with what you put into your body, so take a close look at what you?re putting in your dog?s body. There are almost as many different dog foods as there are people cereals, and most of the highly marketed dog foods are NOT healthy. The FDA does not regulate the pet food industry which results in most commercial pet foods being made from less than high quality ingredients. Dogs have the genetic potential to live 20 years or more but we are robbing those years from their lives with inferior pet foods. Don?t naively believe the slick marketing claims of the food manufacturers. Realize that green nuggets are NOT green vegetables: they are nuggets that are dyed green. Same with other colored kibble. Examine your dog?s food label , remembering that the primary sources are listed first.

Good kibble should not contain generic fats such as ?animal fat?

Analysis: In foreign policy debate, Romney and Obama get domestic

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - It was billed as a debate on foreign policy, but that did not stop Democratic President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, from sparring repeatedly on issues that polls indicate are more important to voters: the economy and jobs.

After two contentious debates that helped to reshape the battle for the White House, the final encounter between Obama and Romney featured few actual differences on foreign policy.

Instead, the candidates detoured from the debate's agenda to reprise their frequent clashes over government budgets, school class sizes, the federal bailout of the auto industry and tax incentives for small business.

There was no aggressive Romney offensive, like the one in the October 3 debate that help boost the Republican in the polls so that as of Monday, he was virtually tied with Obama in the Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll.

But Obama, who recovered from the first debate to turn in a well-reviewed performance in his second debate against Romney last week, stayed aggressive on Monday.

Obama accused the former Massachusetts governor of proposing wrong and reckless policies "at home and abroad" and reminded voters that Romney had praised former Republican President George W. Bush as a good economic steward.

Romney played it cautious in foreign policy areas where he has little experience but took every opportunity to turn the debate back to the economy and his criticism of Obama's economic leadership.

In the end, analysts said, it was a showdown that is unlikely to alter the course of the race to the November 6 election, as Romney did in the first debate.

"It was the kind of debate that is going to make both sides feel good," said Bruce Buchanan, a political scientist at the University of Texas.

"Obama has the edge on foreign policy, but that's not the issue that is pushing voters," he said. "And Romney made his points and was particularly effective at tying the economy into the debate about the strength of the country."

    'AMERICA MUST LEAD'

Romney, the former head of a private equity firm who has made his business experience the centerpiece of his campaign, frequently linked the slow economic recovery to a need to strengthen U.S. standing abroad.

"In order to be able to fulfill our role in the world, America must be strong," Romney said. "America must lead, and for that to happen, we have to strengthen our economy here at home."

Obama also frequently linked foreign and domestic policy, calling for efforts to encourage keeping manufacturing jobs in the United States, hire more teachers and push for energy independence.

Romney backed the substance of Obama's policy on a few foreign policy issues - Iran sanctions, Afghanistan, keeping the U.S. military out of Syria, using drones to target terrorists and the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

"That was perhaps the most agreement we've heard in this long campaign," said Mitchell McKinney, a political communications specialist at the University of Missouri.

Romney even shied away from challenging Obama on his handling of the deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya, the administration's biggest foreign policy vulnerability.

Obama was more aggressive, accusing Romney of being "all over the map" on foreign policy and ridiculing his plan to bolster the Navy by building more ships.

"You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets," Obama said.

Romney countered: "Attacking me is not an agenda."

    A 'LIMITED' IMPACT?

Polls showed Obama the narrow winner overall - a CNN snap poll gave the edge to him by 48 percent to 40 percent - and showed that a majority of voters believed that Romney passed the test of whether he could be commander-in-chief.

The CNN poll said 60 percent believed he could handle that responsibility, compared with 66 percent for Obama, who is the commander-in-chief.

Half of the voters polled said the debate would have no impact on their vote, while 24 percent said they were more likely to vote for Obama and 25 percent for Romney.

"The foreign policy debate has the least impact on voters, who are just not that knowledgeable on international affairs," said political scientist Jamie Chandler of Hunter College. "This debate is going to have a limited impact on the campaign."

Report: Most women need Paps every 3 or 5 years

Most women can wait three to five years between checks for cervical cancer, depending on their age and test choice, say guidelines issued Monday.

Many medical groups have long recommended a Pap test every three years for most women. The new advice from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that's true for women ages 21 to 29 whose Paps show no sign of trouble.

But for healthy women ages 30 to 65, the preferred check is a Pap plus a test for the cancer-causing HPV virus, the group concluded. If both show everything's fine, they can wait five years for further screening.

The guidelines from the nation's largest OB-GYN organization agree with advice issued earlier this year by a government panel, the American Cancer Society and other medical groups ? showing growing consensus that it's safe for the right women to wait longer between Paps.

Cervical cancer grows so slowly that regular Pap smears, which examine cells scraped from the cervix, can find signs early enough to treat before a tumor even forms.

Certain strains of HPV, the human papillomavirus, cause most cervical cancer, but the infection has to persist for a number of years to do its damage. HPV is a super-common virus in young women, whose bodies usually clear the infection on their own. Thus, health groups don't recommend routinely testing 20-somethings for HPV because it would cause too many false alarms.

A Pap averages around $40; HPV tests can add another $50 to $100.

    The guidelines also say:

?Women 30 and older still can choose a Pap alone every three years.

?Screening shouldn't begin before age 21.

?Women over 65 can end screening if prior testing hasn't found problems.

Does Your MS Make Voting Difficult? - Multiple Sclerosis Blog

Does Your MS Make Voting Difficult?

2012 is the first 100% mail-in ballot election in my adopted home state. I will forever miss the group civil action of standing on line and conversing with my precinct mates as we shuffled toward the voting booth. Ever since my parents first took us with them behind the curtains of the big, gray voting machines that were wheeled into the local elementary school so we could watch them flip levers and cast their votes, the act of filling out a ballot has been important to me.

The very first election for which I was eligible to vote was a presidential election and I haven?t missed a primary or general election since. Even while riding the wild waves of the Bering Sea, I would fill out my absentee form and send them back from a lonely post office on the Aleutian Islands.

While I resisted as long as I could ? opting to drop my ballot off at my polling place on Election Day rather than mail it in as soon as it was filled out ? I now accept and embrace the convenience.

This brings me to the topic of today?s blog: Does your MS make it difficult for you to cast your vote?

I know that some of us have difficulty getting out of the house. Relying on public paratransit can be a frustrating exercise. Reading, writing and filling in those bubbles are beyond some of us anymore.

I know there are ways to make it easier for us to cast our official ballots, but I?m wondering if your MS has gotten in the way before, if you are worried that it will this time and ? maybe even more important for the rest of us ? have you figured a way around these hurdles?

No matter which side of the candidates, races and initiatives you intend to tic the box, your disease should not bar you from your civic duty.

One final reminder; just a few more days to get your questions in for your chance to ?interview? me There have been some great questions and I look forward to seeing more from you.

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

    Cheers

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Biochemists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered a genetic sequence that can alter its host gene's activity in response to cellular energy levels. The scientists have found this particular energy-sensing switch in bacterial genes, which could make it a target for a powerful new class of antibiotics. If similar energy-sensing switches are also identified for human genes, they may be useful for treating metabolism-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how cells sense and manage their energy levels, which is one of the most important processes in biology," said the study's senior author, Martha J. Fedor, a professor the departments of Chemical Physiology and Molecular Biology and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

The findings are described online ahead of print on October 21, 2012, in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

    A Fuel Sensor

This type of gene-switching sequence is known as a riboswitch because it appears on the strand of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that is first transcribed from a gene's DNA. Unlike other known riboswitches, which have relatively limited functions, this one acts as a sensor for the basic molecular fuel that powers all living cells and controls many genes.

The newly discovered riboswitch detects a small molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the standard unit of chemical energy in all known organisms on our planet. Scientists had thought that cells use only large and relatively complex proteins to sense these all-important energy molecules and adjust cell activities accordingly. No one had found ATP sensors among riboswitches, which can alter cell activity at a more fundamental level -- usually by interrupting a gene's transcription from DNA.

Moreover, previously described riboswitches are relatively simple feedback sensors that affect narrow metabolic pathways. Most of them merely sense and adjust the expression rate of their own host gene. "This is the first riboswitch that is known to be involved in global metabolic regulation," said Fedor.

In recent years, the Fedor team had found hints that such a riboswitch could exist. Many RNA sequences with possible riboswitch activity had never been characterized, and several riboswitches in bacteria sense molecules that are closely related to ATP. Fedor and a graduate student in her laboratory, Peter Y. Watson, therefore set out to find bacterial riboswitches that could indeed sense ATP.

    Caught in the Act

The task was more challenging than it might have seemed. Watson could not simply expose suspected riboswitches to ATP and see which ones stuck best to the energy molecules. ATP is present in high concentrations in cells, and its interactions with its known protein sensors are necessarily fleeting, low-affinity affairs. Interactions with a riboswitch would be expected to look the same. "Such interactions are really too weak to be detected using traditional methods," Watson said. But he found evidence that an RNA interaction with an ATP-like molecule would occur in a way that allows the brief coupling to be caught in the act -- using a burst of ultraviolet radiation, which can create a strong chemical crosslink between two molecules.

In this way, he discovered a stretch of apparent ATP-binding RNA known as the ydaO motif. Watson performed structure-mapping analyses of ydaO to confirm that it binds to ATP and to determine precisely where it binds. Attaching ydaO to a "reporter" gene, he found that in bacterial cells, the reporter gene's expression level stayed low when ATP levels were normal and rose sharply when ATP levels dropped -- as would be expected if ydaO is really an ATP-sensing riboswitch. Even in unaltered cells of a test bacterium, B. subtilis, levels of the genes that normally contain the ydaO motif rose and fell in the same way in response to changing ATP levels.

The ydaO motif occurs in the large subset of bacteria known as gram-positive bacteria. Across these bacterial species, it has been found, to date, on 580 separate genes. "These ydaO-regulated genes encode proteins that have a wide variety of functions, from cell wall metabolism to amino acid transport," Watson said. "It makes sense that a riboswitch in control of such disparate processes would be responding to a central metabolite such as ATP."

    New Possibilities

The finding has basic scientific importance because it is the first known example of a riboswitch that binds ATP; it is also the first known riboswitch that has such broad regulatory functions. "It opens up the possibility that RNA switches are involved in the general regulation of metabolism," said Fedor.

The fact that ydaO motifs serve as "off-switches" for key bacterial genes also makes them a potential target for new antibiotics. "Hitting these riboswitches with a small-molecule, ATP-mimicking drug so that they can't turn on genes that promote bacterial growth and survival could be a viable approach," said Fedor.

Her laboratory will now search for other ATP-sensing riboswitches in bacteria and in higher organisms, including humans. A human ATP-sensing riboswitch, if targeted appropriately by drugs, might be able to alter cell activity in ways that help treat common metabolic disorders. Type 2 diabetes, which presently affects several hundred million people worldwide, is known to feature the improper regulation of ATP levels in cells.

Funding for the study, "The ydaO motif is an ATP-sensing riboswitch in Bacillus subtilis," was provided by the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

Emma Watson continues to show up at events looking like a student in an introductory costume design class who is testing out designs. But for some reason, she keeps getting praised. Just this week she was named Best Dressed, even beating out Sarah Jessica Parker. Sigh. So in response, I have put together some of her most ridiculous outfits. Here is the one that got her the best dressed title: Silly, right? I mean, doesn’t she look a little bit like Victoria Beckham’s less-fortunate little sister? Or how about this one? I mean, what is that a nightgown? The point is that she rivals Miley Cyrus when it comes to bad fashion, yet she is showered with praise. Here, let me give you one more little gem: Need I say more? Listening to Alexie, I admit feeling a little like I?ve felt watching episodes of Mad Men?utterly absorbed in rich storytelling, fascinating character, delightfully unexpected turns, and then at the end of it all wondering, ?What just happened??

Though, after Alexie?s talk was over, I also found myself returning to his remarks again and again.

So, later that night, I was glad to discover?Scott Miller?and?Nora Ferrel?s reflections already here on this blog. I didn?t mind them beating me to the punch. I was glad for their help in sense-making. Talking to others during our remaining time together in Seattle, Sherman Alexie was my Rorschach test.

What did you see in the ink blot?

Some loved it. Some were unimpressed. Some weren?t sure what to make of it.

It certainly wasn?t formulaic. There was no, ?Here?s what I?m going to tell you,? followed by, ?Here is me telling you what I told you I?d tell you,? followed by, ?Here?s what I just told you,? landing on a single, clear call to action.

But without question it was an EXPERIENCE we all shared.? It was communication in the sense of the word?s original meaning, ?to share? or, ?to make common.?

At one point in his meandering talk, Alexie joked that the scariest thing to hear on a reservation is the voice of an elder taking the microphone to say, ?I have a few words.?

That?s true to be sure for the audience of any speaker whose words (God help us if they were penned by any of us!) instantly set minds wandering or hands reaching for smart phones or other literal or figurative emergency exits. In the business of doing good, there is copy aplenty that is mealy-mouthed, plain vanilla, jargon-drenched, and platitude-y. And who cares if there is a clear call to action at the end, if you lose them at, ?Hello??

Storytelling step one, said Alexie, is to be ?immediately, totally, vulnerable.?

So, I?m not ashamed to say, I still don?t quite know what happened in Seattle.

But I know it was fantastic.

And somehow my work is going to be better as a result.

Twitter censors users for the first time

For the first time ever, Twitter censored a controversial account at the request of local government earlier this week. It was run by neo-Nazis. The ban, which is the first of its kind under a relatively new Twitter policy that gives the company "the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country -- while keeping it available in the rest of the world." As such, the ban?is only effective in Germany, however. The rest of the world is free to follow the bigots.

[RELATED: The Good, the Bad, and the Fuzzy of Twitter's New Censorship Rules]

We're not sure what to think about this one. On one hand, we want to give Twitter a high five for not giving neo-Nazis another forum to spread hatred. Neo-Nazis are really awful! This particular group,?Besseres Hannover or @hannoverticker, sparked a wildfire of complaints from other readers for their racist, hateful and generally unpleasant banter on the microblogging network.?According to the Financial Times, "it distributed racist materials in schools, sent abusive video messages to officials and threatened physical violence against immigrants." Who likes encouraging school children to be racists and promoting xenophobic violence amongst the masses? Nobody does, because that's hateful and horrible. Which is exactly why the?Ministry of the Interior in Lower Saxony banned the group, and local law enforcement pressed Twitter to close the organization's Twitter account.

[RELATED: The Hack Behind The Twitter Meltdown]

The issue isn't so simple for free speech advocates. Twitter has long been a haven for dissidents, activists and freedom fighters, the vast majority of whom are?not neo-Nazis. However, this particular group fit all the qualifications that Twitter laid out when it warned in January that it might "restrict certain types of content" in "countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression ... such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content." Indeed, Besseres Hannover had been banned by local law enforcement agencies, who also asked Twitter to restrict access to the account. "We announced the ability to withhold content back in Jan. We're using it now for the first time re: a group deemed illegal in Germany," said?Twitter's general counsel, Alex MacGillivray, appropriately, in a tweet. His previous tweet explained, "Never want to withhold content; good to have tools to do it narrowly & transparently." The tweet before that provided this beautiful photo of a sunset in San Francisco, but that's not really relevant, is it?

So what'll the free speech advocates think of all this? They're probably upset, huh? Well. It's unclear. Like Twitter admitted, this is the first time they've enforced their new local censorship measures, and it happened nearly a year after they announced the idea. Is it such a big deal if Twitter censors one account in one country once a year? What if it's a neo-Nazi organization bent on spreading hatred and bigotry? That doesn't sound so bad, especially since it's the example Twitter provided in its blog post explaining the new feature that allows them to censor accounts.

But what if it's somebody else? What if it's a French account that's begging for a crackdown on anti-Semitism in the Parisian suburbs or an American account that's hyper critical of the government's plans to thwart terrorist attacks? Surely, local government might become impatient with such Twitter accounts and could very well ask Twitter to censor it. In the past, censorship is something that wasn't in Twitter's playbook. Now, that's no longer true.

We'll have to wait and see how Twitter puts this policy into play in the future. In the meantime, we doubt many Germans are sorry that neo-Nazis have to try a little harder to get their message heard.?

Stewart: Romney binder a 'Notebook of Nipples'

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

Jon Stewart wasted no time leaping on Tuesday night's Presidential Debates on "Daily Show" Wednesday -- and he picked two of the most obvious soundbites from the debates to skewer: First, Mitt Romney's?infamous comment about getting ?binders full of women? qualified for jobs when he was governor of Massachusetts.?Stewart played the clip, arranged the papers on his desk, paused, and smiled.

?Couple of things: One the women?s group was called MassGAP and they approached Governor Romney, not the other way around. And two, my guess is they did not refer to what they presented as a binder full of women, but perhaps as an organized collection of qualified resumes,? Stewart said. ?But hey, Binder of Women, Book of Broads, Notebook of Nipples, whatever.?

He had more fun with the Libya discussion, which centered on determining the exact day President Obama first referred to it as an act of terror. Watching Romney walk into a trap of his own devising was almost too good for Stewart to talk about, particularly given that Obama urged him to "please, proceed."

?There?s your first clue -- when you feel you?re about you?re about to spring what you think is the checkmate moment of the debate and your debate opponent says to you, ?Please proceed. Hold on, are you trying to open that door? Allow me to open it wider,?? Stewart said. ?When your opponent does that, you may want to wonder a la Wile E Coyote and Road Runner, (whether) that door your opponent is pointing to is merely paint on a rock.?

From Stewart?s perspective, that?s exactly what it was. It should make Thursday?s interview with President Obama less awkward than it would have been a week ago, when Stewart was still focused on his less-robust performance in the first debate. Odds are good, however, that this will still come up in that conversation.

Stephen Colbert also had some thoughts, although he first told his viewers: ?If you?re an undecided voter who did not watch, just trust me, it?s 2-0.?

Like Stewart, he considered the Libya comment a turning point -- but wasn?t as happy with the outcome. ?No, no ... it?s supposed to change everything the other way!? he said.? ?That should have been Mitt?s moment of chest-thumping dominance over the carcass of his opponent, and it would have been too had it not been for that meddling moderator.?

In that latter comment, he echoed the Fox News spin, which also decried Candy Crowley?s purported fact-checking, which they argued should have taken place only after the event.

?Yes, the time for fact-checking is after the event, when voters have stopped watching,? Colbert said.

He was also sympathetic towards the Fox criticism of the ?random? questions. ?Why are we talking about Lady Issues in the Town Hall? Save it for the Sadie Hawkins debate when the girls are supposed to do the asking.?

And don?t get him started on assault weapons, or Romney?s spin that two-parent households could help solve the problem.

?The answer to gun violence isn?t getting rid of assault weapon, its two-parent households,? Colbert said. ?Because when a psychopath marches into the mall in Kevlar body armor, slowly lifting the laser site of his Ak-47 towards the Sunglass Hut, the only thing that will stop him from carnage is when he asks himself what would mom and dad think??

And having learned that people on the street will opine on anything if a microphone is in front of them, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" again sent roving reporters out to talk to people not just about a debate that hadn't happened yet (as they did last night, before the second presidential debates even started) -- but on one that would never exist: A First Ladies debate between Ann Romney and Michelle Obama. Naturally, everyone they spoke to was well-informed and happy to talk about who did the best in that particular debate.?
