Ghana's School of Performing Arts Turns 50

The University of Ghana School of Performing Arts has launched its 50th annniversary with speeches and a variety of? artistic performances.

The launch which took place at the National theatre last week, was graced with the presence of many old students such as Ernest Abbeyquaye,? Kofi Middleton Mends, Prof. Martin Owusu, Nii Kwei Sowah, Doris Kuwornu, David Dontoh, Dzifa Gomashie, Edinam Atatsii, Mawuli Semevor, Akosua Abdallah,? Africanus Aveh? and Nii Okwei Hammond

The Guest of Honour, Dr. Cosmas Badasu who is the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ghana applauded the School for its hard work so far and promised to deliver on promises that had been made to the School with regard to the completion of their new bulding to accommodate the growing numbers in the school.

The Acting director,Dr. Awo Mana Asiedu, paid tribute to those who had the vision to establish the School and noted that at 50, it was time as a nation to recognize the importance of the School.

She mentioned many achievements of the School which included the development of? human resource for the Centres of National Culture nationwide, education, media and the artistic world as a whole.

The anniversary activities stretches over a three-month period and comprise drama, dance, music and film. There is also a playwriting competition on the cards. All? activities take place on Legon campus.

This month, August, will see Neo-Traditional dance performances on August 24 and 25; Pop Music Concert on August 25 and 26; and Yaw Asare?s Desert Dreams on August 30 and 31.

Many other such exciting activities have been lined up for September and October.

This year, 2012, the School of Performing Arts is? fifty years old. Starting out initially as the School of Music and Drama in 1962 under the auspices of the Institute of African Studies, it became the School of Performing Arts in 1971, comprising two departments, Music and Theatre Arts.

The Theatre Arts Department, at the time, comprised two units, Dance and Drama.? In 1996 Dance studies became a Department on its own, increasing the number of Departments to three. Plans are in place for a fourth department of Media Arts.

The School? offers diploma and two undergraduate degree programmes in addition to graduate level programmes up to the PhD level. The School has a Resident Theatre Group, Abibigromma, made up largely of graduates of the School with a senior member appointed as its Artistic Director.

Virden Parks and Recreation News for Monday, August 27th| Virden ...

The Walking Track in the Arena will be closed beginning today, August 27th until September 5th to allow for the installation of the new Sports Track on the upper concourse.

In addition to the installation of the new Sports Track the ice is being installed in the Arena along with brand new logos which will hi-lite both our newest team, the MJHL Virden Oil Capitals, and our existing teams.

Combined with some other minor changes to make way for the MJHL Virden Oil Capitals and a general cleanup the Arena will be going from great to fantastic over the next few weeks.

Just a reminder that the Virden Swimming Pool is closing for the season on Wednesday, August 29th.
If you haven?t picked up your report cards they will be available at the Pool office until that date.

Also, this Wednesday, August 29th, is registration day for Fall programs offered by Prairie West Recreation.
Registration takes place from 5pm until 8pm at Tundra Oil and Gas Place.

The next couple of weeks are transition weeks for Virden Parks and Recreation with Summer events winding down and Fall/ Winter events gearing up.

While the Swimming season is drawing to a close other outdoor venues such as the baseball diamonds, soccer pitch, tennis courts and parks are still available.

Frankenstein programmers test a cybersecurity monster

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In order to catch a thief, you have to think like one.

UT Dallas computer scientists are trying to stay one step ahead of cyber attackers by creating their own monster. Their monster can cloak itself as it steals and reconfigures information in a computer program.

In part because of the potentially destructive nature of their technology, creators have named this software system Frankenstein, after the monster-creating scientist in author Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus.

"Shelley's story is an example of a horror that can result from science, and similarly, we intend our creation as a warning that we need better detections for these types of intrusions," said Dr. Kevin Hamlen, associate professor of computer science at UT Dallas who created the software, along with his doctoral student Vishwath Mohan. "Criminals may already know how to create this kind of software, so we examined the science behind the danger this represents, in hopes of creating counter measures."

Frankenstein is not a computer virus, which is a program that can multiply and take over other machines. But, it could be used in cyber warfare to provide cover for a virus or another type of malware, or malicious software.

In order to avoid antivirus software, malware typically mutates every time it copies itself onto another machine. Antivirus software figures out the pattern of change and continues to scan for sequences of code that are known to be suspicious.

Frankenstein evades this scanning mechanism. It takes code from programs already on a computer and repurposes it, stringing it together to accomplish the malware's malicious task with new instructions.

"We wanted to build something that learns as it propagates," Hamlen said. "Frankenstein takes from what is already there and reinvents itself."

"Just as Shelley's monster was stitched from body parts, our Frankenstein also stitches software from original program parts, so no red flags are raised," he said. "It looks completely different, but its code is consistent with something normal."

Hamlen said Frankenstein could be used to aid government counter terrorism efforts by providing cover for infiltration of terrorist computer networks. Hamlen is part of the Cyber Security Research and Education Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The UT Dallas research is the first published example describing this type of stealth technology, Hamlen said.

"As a proof-of-concept, we tested Frankenstein on some simple algorithms that are completely benign," Hamlen said. "We did not create damage to anyone's systems."

The next step, Hamlen said, is to create more complex versions of the software.

Frankenstein was described in a paper published online (https://www.usenix.org/conference/woot12/frankenstein-stitching-malware-benign-binaries) in conjunction with a presentation at a recent USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

More pet owners are turning to treadmills to make sure their dogs get exercise.

LOS ANGELES ? Like any true celebrity, Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from ?The Artist? and ?Water for Elephants,? puts in his time on the treadmill.

At 10, Uggie doesn?t do a heavy workout, just a light trot and walking, said owner-trainer Omar Von Muller of Los Angeles. But Von Muller bought Uggie a DogPacer for those times when he can?t go out because of weather, work or paparazzi.

?It?s important to keep him in shape,? Von Muller said. ?If they don?t get their exercise, they get old too fast, just like people.?

Some 3 million dogs across the country were using treadmills in 2010, according to a survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association. The group asked about treadmills for the first time in its 2011/2012 survey because the machines were selling so briskly, APPA President Bob Vetere said.

It may look like the dog is going nowhere. But pet owners with fat, old or misbehaving dogs say they measure the benefits of canine treadmills in pounds, years and sleep.

Heather Chau borrowed a DogPacer when her rescue dog Heidi arrived weighing 115 pounds. Heidi is now down to 80 pounds, and Chau, a Las Vegas bookkeeper, was so impressed, she returned the donated DogPacer and bought her own.

Now all four of her dogs use the treadmill. Chau explains that she can?t walk four dogs at a time, and summer in Las Vegas heats up early and winds down late.

?I want to make sure the rest of their lives are the healthiest we can make them. If the treadmill promotes a longer life, then it?s easy to do it each day. Whatever they have been through is in the past. Whatever we can do now to help them lead a healthier, better life is worth it,? Chau said.

Treadmills come in a range of sizes and prices.

At LA Dog Works in Los Angeles, owner Andrew Rosenthal has a DogPacer, one of the newest and least expensive on the market at $499, that his Alsatian German shepherd Josh likes to use.

Rosenthal?s 24-hour dog care center, which includes boarding, grooming, training, daycare, hydrotherapy, massage therapy and a retail store, also uses a $3,000 Jog A Dog and a $40,000 underwater treadmill.

The most visible difference between a human treadmill and a canine treadmill is the size, because a dog?s stride is longer and his body shorter than a human?s, said David Ezra, the owner of Las Vegas-based DogPacer. DogPacer plans to release a treadmill for toy dogs in September and the price will be smaller too, Ezra said.

The Pooch Hotel in Los Angeles, owned by Petco Animal Supplies Inc., offers a treadmill to help keep pets in shape. About half the dog population has some kind of weight problem, so it was a no-brainer, said Jason Michal, who runs the hotels as Petco?s vice president of pet services and hospitality.

For home use, Pennsylvania-based GoPet has canine treadmills and a treadwheel, which looks like a giant hamster wheel, for small to large breeds, ranging from $475 to $1,225.

Dog trainer April Suhr of Las Vegas believes shelters across the country could make animals more adoptable if the animals used treadmills just two or three days a week.

It?s easy for a dog in a shelter to go cage crazy, she said. ?They pace. They don?t focus. They bark. They won?t eat. They won?t make eye contact.?

The answer is exercise, she said. ?It?s why the gym is so good for us when we are stressed out. It puts our endorphins to good use.?

Suhr, who volunteers at Adopt a Rescue Pet and has her own business, 4 Pawz On The Floor, also works part-time in a pet superstore. She brought a rescue dog, Max, to the store every week to use the machine.

?Not only did he calm down, but he was using the treadmill one day when a woman came in, saw him, fell in love with him and adopted him,? she said.

Suhr has one at her home for her three pets and her foster dogs. Suhr figures she would have to run miles and miles and spend hours and hours to get all her dogs as much exercise as they get on the treadmill in minutes.

Marie Czarnecki, 73, of Las Vegas is having her left knee replaced in a few weeks and will be out of commission for a few months.

She ordered a DogPacer the first day she saw one at her trainer?s office. Her shelties, Dee Dee, 6, and Sundance, 3, have been using it for several months. She calls it the best thing in her garage besides her car.

?Now I take them out with a leash, they get on, I set it and they go twice a day for 10 minutes,? she said. ?They run over a mile a day and they do like it.?

Apple CEO Tim Cook has reportedly sent out an email to Apple employees, sharing his thoughts on today's massive $1 billion victory against partner/rival. Cook's comments echoed a great deal of Apple's public statement, but according to 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman, also added:

We chose legal action very reluctantly and only after repeatedly asking Samsung to stop copying our work. For us this lawsuit has always been about something much more important than patents or money. It?s about values. Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, among the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

The explosion shattered walls of nearby shops, ripped out windows from homes and left the surrounding streets covered with rubble and twisted scraps of metal.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning and ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. "This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said on state television late Saturday that at least 39 people were killed by the explosion, up from the earlier death toll of 26. He said that the dead included 18 National Guard troops and that six of the bodies had not yet been identified. Other officials said earlier that the dead included a 10-year-old boy.

In a neighborhood next to the refinery, shopkeeper Yolimar Romero said she was at her computer when a shock wave swept over the area shortly after 1 a.m.

"At that instant, the whole house shook as if it were an earthquake," she said. "The windows went flying off with their frames and everything."

Electricity was knocked out, leaving Romero in the dark and her house filled with smoke. She found a flashlight and started looking for her husband and three children.

Outside on the street, the family saw scattered hunks of brick walls and ruins of a National Guard post and about 20 other homes. Bodies were being pulled from buildings down the street.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released.

Flames reaching nearly 100 feet into the night air still crackled almost 20 hours after the explosion occurred, giving off searing heat felt by the residents of the neighborhood located approximately 1,000 feet from the refinery.

"This does not seem to be getting any better, I see and feel more and more flames," said Francisco Rojas, a 29-year-old taxi driver from the neighborhood as he loaded some of his belongings into a truck.

"I have a young daughter and my wife, and we don't want to take the risk of dying here," Rojas added.

Officials said firefighters had largely controlled the fire at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where flames were still visible on Saturday night after billowing dark smoke all day.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a natural gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said.

Images shortly after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky, and injured survivors on a stretcher and in a wheelchair. The bloodied bodies of victims were loaded onto pickup trucks.

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to determine the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor was appointed to lead the investigation and troops were deployed to the area.

While the cause of the disaster remains unclear, some oil workers and critics of Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company.

"We warned that something was going to happen, a catastrophic event," said Ivan Freites, secretary general of a 1,200-member union of oil and natural gas industry workers in Falcon state where the refinery is located. He spoke in a telephone interview from an area near the refinery, where he could see the flames raging in the distance.

Apple overtakes rival Microsoft

CALIFORNIA: Apple has dethroned longtime rival Microsoft as the most valuable company in history based on the value of its stock, which climbed to around $623.51 billion.

Apple's stock began a steady rise late last week and hit a new high of $665.15 a share on Monday when the Nasdaq exchange closed amid rumours the tech giant is poised to release new versions of iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices. Apple shares inched up further in after-hours trading.

Apple topped the record of nearly $619 billion set by software titan Microsoft in 1999, during the famed dot-com boom years. "The record set today (Monday) will continue to add positive sentiment to the stock, especially as we get closer to the end of the year,-? said Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael James.

"More portfolio managers are going to need to have an Apple.-?
Apple shares began a rapid ascent on Friday after Jefferies investment bank analyst Peter Misek predicted the stock will hit $900 and predicted that the arrival of the iPhone 5 'will be the biggest handset launch in history'.

Jefferies reasoned that Apple is positioned to take a significant portion of the profit to be generated by hot trends in smartphones, tablet computers, and gadgets linking to the Internet on latest-generation 4G networks.

The Internet has been abuzz with unconfirmed reports that Apple will introduce a new iPhone, perhaps with a larger screen, at a press event in September.

The Cupertino, California-based company is also believed to be readying a smaller version of its market-ruling iPad, and a revamped Apple TV box, referred to unofficially as 'iTV', that routes video or programming to televisions.

"We believe the iTV is in full production,-? Misek said.
The surge in Apple's stock price demonstrated that investors are confident that the next generation of gadgets from the culture-changing company will impress anew, according to James.

"Expectations that there is going to be an upcoming products cycle with iPad-mini, the new iPhone, and further penetration into China; all of these have people expecting good things to come in the short term from Apple,-? James said.

Investors also see promise in hot new Apple gadgets hitting the market in time for year-end holiday shopping, when the products typically shine.

Wind concentrates pollutants with unexpected order in an urban environment

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Cities -- with their concrete canyons, isolated greenery, and congested traffic -- create seemingly chaotic and often powerful wind patterns known as urban flows. Carried on these winds are a variety of environmental hazards, including exhaust particles, diesel fumes, chemical residues, ozone, and the simple dust and dander produced by dense populations.

In a paper published in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Physics of Fluids, researchers present the unexpected finding that pollutant particles, rather than scattering randomly, prefer to accumulate in specific regions of the urban environment and even form coherent structures. "The unexpected finding is coherent patterns in fluid flows were thought to have no real analog in nature," said Wenbo Tang of Arizona State University in Tempe. "In previous studies, the existence of these patterns in fluid flows was only verified with idealized 'theoretical' flows. It was not known if such structures were robust enough to manifest in the environment."

The researchers were able to verify this by using a new mathematical formula, the first of its kind, to simulate the long-term random motion of pollutant particles as would be found in the real world. These more realistic simulations revealed that coherent patterns emerged from the random motions of particles carried along by the urban flow. The results can be used to generate maps of well and poorly mixed regions and highlight urban areas that are most susceptible to high concentrations of pollutants, indicating locations that should be avoided or remedied.

According to the researchers, the modeling capabilities developed in this project directly benefit decision makers addressing issues related to urban pollution, human comfort, and the effects of climate change on urban areas. The research also aims to understand the interconnection of urban flows with the regional and global atmosphere.

South Korea to return Japan s protest letter

South Korea: South Korea said Thursday it would return a protest letter from Japan's prime minister without answering it, amid a bitter row over disputed islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's letter will be returned because it could be used by Tokyo to strengthen its territorial claim over the islands, the foreign ministry said.
The letter addressed to South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has been kept at the South's embassy in Japan.

"Our embassy in Japan will contact the Japanese side today to return Prime Minister Noda's letter," said ministry spokesman Cho Tai-Young.

Relations have sharply worsened since Lee paid a surprise visit on August 10 to the Seoul-controlled islands known as Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japan.

He said his trip, the first by a South Korean president, was intended to press Japan to settle grievances left over from its colonial rule over Korea from 1910-45.

Lee further angered Japan by saying later that Emperor Akihito would have to sincerely apologise for past excesses should he wish to visit South Korea.

Noda in his letter expressed regret at the islands visit and at Lee's remarks on Akihito, Yonhap news agency said.

The visit infuriated Japan, which recalled its ambassador from Seoul. Tokyo also cancelled a finance ministers' meeting scheduled for this month and said it would review a foreign exchange swap agreement with Seoul.

South Korea has rejected Japan's proposal that the two countries ask the International Court of Justice to settle the dispute.
