Damaged trains being removed from wreck site

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) ? Commuter trains damaged in a crash in Connecticut were being removed Sunday in the first step to making repairs and restoring service, the agency that runs Metro-North said.

Aaron Donovan, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the crash, gave Metro-North the OK to remove the trains. Hundreds of feet of track need to be repaired, he said.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us, to restore signals and overhead wires," Donovan said.

Later Sunday, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will announce jointly with Metro-North a plan for the rush-hour commute beginning Monday.

Investigators are looking at a broken section of rail to see if it is connected to the derailment and collision outside Bridgeport that left dozens injured. Seventy-two people were sent to the hospital Friday evening after an eastbound train from New York City derailed and was hit by a westbound train. Nine remain hospitalized.

Service has been suspended between South Norwalk and New Haven, which includes stops at 12 stations.

Donovan compared the loss of service to a "very significant storm."

Most recently, the Waterbury branch of Metro-North was down immediately after the massive Feb. 9-10 snowstorm that blanketed the Northeast.

Investigators said Saturday that the crash was not the result of foul play, but a fractured section of rail is being studied to determine if it is connected to the accident. National Transportation Safety Board member Earl Weener said the broken rail is of substantial interest to investigators and a portion of the track will be sent to a lab for analysis.

Weener said it's not clear if the accident caused the fracture or if the rail was broken before the crash. He said he won't speculate on the cause of the derailment and emphasized the investigation was in its early stages. Officials earlier described devastating damage and said it was fortunate no one was killed.

The crash damaged the tracks and threatened to snarl travel in the Northeast Corridor. The crash also caused Amtrak to suspend service between New York and Boston.

NTSB investigators arrived Saturday and are expected to be on site for seven to 10 days. They will look at the brakes and performance of the trains, the condition of the tracks, crew performance and train signal information, among other things.

The MTA operates the Metro-North Railroad, the second-largest commuter railroad in the nation. The Metro-North main lines ? the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven ? run northward from New York City's Grand Central Terminal into suburban New York and Connecticut.

The last significant train collision involving Metro-North occurred in 1988 when a train engineer was killed in Mount Vernon, N.Y., when one train empty of passengers rear-ended another, railroad officials said.

I need a real estate contract. I am purchasing my neighbors ... - Zillow

Some would advise you should still consider using an agent, and decide who pays for it.?? Even when both parties agree on price, there is a lot of things for any potential buyer to be aware of.?? For example, the 9 page Arizona Purchase Contract, the Buyers Inspection Period, and etc.

If you don't want to use a Realtor, you can pay for an attorney by the hour.? Last but not least, you may want to contact a title company of your choice, as ALL properties sold in Arizona must go thru a title company, FYI.

Ridley, Lazer to build cycling-specific wind tunnel

Ridley is among five Belgian cycling brands set to break ground on a cycling-specific wind tunnel. Photo: Caley Fretz | VeloNews.com

CHERASCO, Italy (VN) ? Five Belgian cycling brands have attracted 500,000 euros ($641,000) in government funding to build a new collaborative R&D facility focused on aerodynamics and other ?technologies of human power.? Bike brand Ridley, helmet brand Lazer, clothing brand BioRacer, athletic performance center EnergyLab, and Flanders Drive, a ?mobility knowledge center,? will collaborate on the project, which will feature a low-speed wind tunnel and other R&D facilities.

Such a low-speed wind tunnel would be the first in continental Europe.

The collaboration between the five Flandrian sport brands has been dubbed ?Bike Valley,? a reference to the project?s location in the beating heart of Belgian cycling.

The announcement comes hot on the heals of Specialized?s launch on Thursday of a new in-house, bike-specific wind tunnel, which will allow the brand to further improve its aerodynamics research and development efforts, and the timing seems to be no coincidence.

?[Bike Valley] is the only way we can compete on an investment level with the large global multinationals in the bicycling industry,? Marc Hufkens, Bike Valley manager, said in a statement.

Like the Specialized project, the planned Belgian tunnel will be designed around low-speed testing, ideal for the development of cycling equipment.

The concept was conceived by Ridley, a company that was among the first in the cycling industry to develop an aerodynamic road racing frame, the Noah. But without outside help, in the form of its collaborative partners and the government funds, the brand did not have the resources to complete the project.

?Because Ridley and the other Bike Valley partners are Small and Medium Enterprises (with no more than 100 employees) we can only realize such an ambitious project if we can count on the support of the different governments in Belgium and by working together?, said Hufkens.

Even with five partners on board, it was not until the influx of government funding that the project could begin to take off.

?The funding of 500,000 euro is a milestone not to be underestimated,? Hufkens said. ?One can say this is the actual ?go? in establishing Flanders as a worldwide knowledge hub when it comes to cycling in six different domains: sports, industrial activities, tourism and recreation, health, science and technology, mobility.?

Insurance fraud on the increase ? Bankrate, Inc.

Amid a sluggish job market, one industry is growing by leaps and bounds: insurance fraud.

Cases of suspected insurance fraud -- called questionable claims, or QCs in industry speak -- rose 27 percent nationwide from 2010 through 2012, according to new figures released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, or NICB.

During the three-year period, the number of QCs referred by insurers to the bureau increased from 91,652 to 116,171. And unfortunately, the problem is getting worse, growing 9 percent from 2010 to 2011 and 16 percent from 2011 to 2012.

In state-by-state stats, California finished well ahead of the pack with 58,415 questionable claims during the three-year period, followed by Florida (29,086), Texas (27,107), New York (23,402) and Maryland (10,315). States with the greatest per capita increase in QCs during the period include Kentucky (89 percent), Vermont (88 percent), Rhode Island (81 percent), Alaska (75 percent) and Maryland (70 percent).

The top five cities for questionable claims during the period were New York (13,564), Los Angeles (7,779), Miami (5,503), Houston (5,464) and Baltimore (3,690).

What types of insurance most appeal to scam artists?

Auto insurance led the field by far with 209,724 questionable claims, a portion of which likely reflects the concurrent growth in staged accidents during the period. Home insurance fraud was the second most common category with 40,747 QCs, followed by fraud involving workers' compensation and employers' liability policies (11,151), commercial auto insurance (9,512) and commercial/general liability insurance (7,519). The only questionable claim type to decline nationwide during the period involved personal property/fire insurance policies, which dropped from 457 claims in 2010 to 411 in 2012.

Faked or exaggerated injury claims top the list of reasons why insurers refer claims to the NICB, with a whopping 50,472 incidents under review. Questionable theft of a vehicle, boat or heavy equipment placed second with 35,508 QCs, followed by prior loss/damage of miscellaneous property (29,646), fictitious loss of miscellaneous items (29,017) and suspicious theft or loss of property (24,867).

It's hardly breaking news that we all pay for insurance fraud in the form of higher insurance rates. But you can fight back by reporting suspicious fraud anonymously to the NICB by calling (800) TEL-NICB (1-800-835-6422), texting the keyword "fraud" to TIP411 (847411) or via their website at Nicb.org, where you also can download the NICB fraud tips app onto your iPhone or iPad.

Merkel and Pope talk about a 'strong' Europe

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel, mindful of the importance of Christian voters in September elections, met with Pope Francis on Saturday during a quick trip to Rome that focused on helping victims of Europe's economic crisis and emphasizing the continent's Christian roots.

Merkel spoke privately for 45 minutes with the pope at the Apostolic Palace, after exchanging cordial greetings in German.

Her Christian Democrat party depends heavily on support from Protestant and Catholic voters, and the chat and photo opportunity could be a welcome campaign boost for a leader largely identified by Europe's economically suffering citizens as a champion of debt reduction, including painful austerity across much of the continent.

For its part, the Vatican is eager for allies in its campaign to win over more Catholics. Francis was leading a sort of pep rally for the faith in St. Peter's Square Saturday evening, attended by about 150,000 people.

Most were from Europe but many came from the pope's native South America. They sang and prayed during an hours-long gathering ahead of the pope's appearance.

On Thursday, Francis blasted what he called a "cult of money" in a global financial system that ends up tyrannizing, not helping, the world's poor.

Asked whether they had also talked about the pope's recent criticism, Merkel said they spoke about the regulation of the financial markets.

"The regulation of the financial markets is our central problem, our central task," Merkel told reporters on the Vatican grounds. "We are moving ahead, but we are not yet where we want to be, where we could say that a derailment of the guard rails of social market won't happen again."

Merkel added: "It ought to be like this: the economy is there to serve the people. In the last few years, this hasn't been the case at all everywhere."

Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal and especially Greece have seen governments concentrate on debt reduction while slashing state spending. With growth stymied, unemployment, especially among young people, has soared. Businesses, many of them family-run in southern Europe, have failed as bank lending dried up.

The chancellor said the pope had stressed the world needs a strong and just Europe, and she described the overall conversation has encouraging.

Merkel is currently campaigning for re-election in September's general elections. Half of Germany's population is Catholic. In Bavaria especially there is a strong conservative and Catholic tradition.

According to a Vatican statement, Francis and Merkel discussed the socio-political, economic and religious situation in Europe and in the world, including "safeguarding human rights, the persecutions faced by Christians" and religious freedom.

Francis, who is Argentine, has picked up on campaigns by the two previous popes, the Polish John Paul II and German Benedict XVI, to reinvigorate what the Catholic church sees as flagging religious enthusiasm on a continent with Christian roots, including dwindling number of churchgoers in much of Western Europe.

"I see continuity in the missionary aspect, in becoming aware of the importance of Christianity for our Christian roots," said Merkel, adding that the "simple and touching words" of Francis, who was elected pontiff two months ago, are already reaching people.

The Vatican also uses papal visits with major leaders to seek allies in lobbying on behalf of Christians who face discrimination and in some cases physical violence in parts of the world.

Merkel said she has reflected on how she and Francis both had spent part of their lives in countries once under dictatorships ? her native East Germany under Soviet-influenced communist rule, and the pope's Argentine homeland, once ruled by a bloody military dictatorship.

Charles Darwin wrong about coral reef formation?

Though deep drilling on reefs finally confirmed Darwin's model in 1953, the reality of reef-building may be more complex.?

Charles Darwin sparked more than one controversy over the natural progression of life. One such case involved the evolution of coral atolls, the ring-shaped coral reefs that surround submerged tropical islands.

Coral reefs are actually huge colonies of tiny animals that need sunlight to grow. After seeing a reef encircling Moorea, near Tahiti, Darwin came up with his theory that?coral atolls?grow as reefs stretch toward sunlight while ocean islands slowly sink beneath the sea surface. (Cooling ocean crust, combined with the weight of massive islands, causes the islands to sink.)

A century-long controversy ensued after Darwin published his theory in 1842, because some scientists thought the atolls were simply a thin veneer of coral, not many thousands of feet thick as Darwin proposed. Deep drilling on reefs finally confirmed Darwin's model in 1953.

But reef-building is more complex than?Darwin?thought, according to a new study published May 9 in the journal Geology. Although subsidence does play a role, a computer model found seesawing sea levels, which rise and fall with glacial cycles, are the primary driving force behind the striking patterns seen at islands today.

"Darwin actually got it mostly right, which is pretty amazing," said Taylor Perron, the study?s co-author and a geologist at MIT. However, there?s one part Darwin missed. "He didn't know about these glacially induced sea-level cycles," Perron told OurAmazingPlanet.

What happens when sea-level shifts get thrown into the mix? Consider?Hawaii?as an example. Coral grows slowly there, because the ocean is colder than waters closer to the equator. When sea level is at its lowest, the Big Island builds up a nice little reef terrace, like a fringe of hair on a balding pate. But the volcano ? one of the tallest mountains in the world, if measured from the seafloor ? is also quickly sinking. Add the speedy sea-level rise when glaciers melt, and Hawaii's corals just can't keep up. The reefs drown each time sea level rises.

The computer model accounts for the wide array of?coral reefs?seen at islands around the world ? a variety Darwin's model can't explain, the researchers said.

"You can explain a lot of the variety you see just by combining these various processes ? the sinking of islands, the growth of reefs, and the last few million years of sea level going up and down rather dramatically," Perron told OurAmazingPlanet.

For nearly 4 million years, Earth has cycled through global chills, when big glaciers suck up water from the oceans, and swings to sweltering temperatures that melt the ice, quickly raising sea level. This?cyclic growth of ice sheets?takes about 100,000 years.

The researchers also found that one of the few places in the world where sinking islands and sea-level rise create perfect atolls is the Society Islands, where Darwin made his historic observations.

Organic industry clout grows with consumer demand

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The organic food industry is gaining clout on Capitol Hill, prompted by rising consumer demand and its entry into traditional farm states. But that isn't going over well with everyone in Congress.

Tensions between conventional and organic agriculture boiled over this week during a late-night House Agriculture Committee debate on a sweeping farm bill that has for decades propped up traditional crops and largely ignored organics.

When Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Ore., a former organic farmer, offered an amendment to make it easier for organic companies to organize industrywide promotional campaigns, there was swift backlash from some farm-state Republicans, with one member saying he didn't want to see the industry get a free ride and another complaining about organics' "continued assault on agriculture."

"That's one of the things that has caught me and raises my concerns, is that industry's lack of respect for traditional agriculture," said Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., referring to some organic companies' efforts to reduce the number of genetically modified crops in the marketplace.

At the same time, Scott acknowledged that he and his wife buy organic foods.

Growing consumer interest in organics has proved tough for some Republicans on the committee to ignore. Eight Republicans, most of them newer members of the committee, joined with all of the panel's Democrats in supporting the amendment, which was adopted 29-17.

Rep. Vicky Hartzler, a Missouri Republican who owns a farm equipment business and a corn and soybean farm, said she supported the amendment not only because helping organics is good for agriculture but because many of her constituents eat organic foods.

"Organics are a niche market in agriculture with a growing market share, so it makes sense for me to allow farmers to invest some of their own funds to promote their products," she said.

The amendment would allow the organic industry to organize and pay for a unified industry promotional campaign called a "checkoff" that is facilitated by the Agriculture Department but is no cost to the government. These promotional programs have traditionally been limited to individual commodities or crops, producing familiar campaigns like "Got Milk?" and "Beef: It's What's for Dinner."

The amendment would not set up such a program for organics, but it would allow USDA to approve an organic promotional campaign if the industry decided it wanted one. Laura Batcha of the Organic Trade Association says one reason the industry would approve a campaign is that many organic producers are concerned that consumers don't understand that products labeled "natural" aren't necessarily organic, which requires certification.

The organic industry has exploded in the last decade, with $35 billion in sales and 10 percent growth just last year. There are more than 17,000 certified organic businesses in the country.

Producers of organic crops and conventional crops have long been at odds, as organic products have grabbed market share ? more than 4 percent of food and beverage sales in 2011 ? and the industry has advertised organic foods as healthier than other foods. Organic products are required to be certified by the USDA and are grown without pesticides and genetically modified ingredients, mainstays of traditional agriculture.

Government-managed promotional checkoff programs like the one that would be allowed under the amendment are required to be positive and not disparage other products, and some lawmakers seemed wary that such a campaign would be possible.

"How do I present organic pork without disparaging non-organic pork?" asked House Agriculture Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., who opposed the amendment.

Mike Conaway, R-Texas, took issue with part of the amendment that would allow the organic producers to opt out of other commodity campaigns, an option that isn't given to conventional producers.

"Looks to me like they have a free ride on this thing," Conaway said, in an at times angry exchange with Schrader.

Despite the rancor, the chances that the amendment will become law are good, as the Senate Agriculture Committee added the same amendment to its version of the farm bill.

Schrader told his colleagues that embracing organics is essential to appealing to consumers in a time when big farms are often demonized by popular culture. He said that many young people are coming back to farms because of nontraditional agriculture.

"American agriculture is under siege," he said. "Urban folks do not understand where their food and fiber comes from. ... The point here is to hopefully position American agriculture where we're not always trying to catch up to what the American consumer wants."

Doctor? PT? Where To Turn When You Experience A Nagging Injury ...

    Posted by Tim Vagen

As my work in post rehab training continues, I am asked many times about when strength and conditioning coaches or trainers should ?refer out? a client who is experiencing difficulty in the training program. What would constitute a referral to a physician, Physical Therapist, or other medical professional or perhaps even another trainer? Is pain your primary reason? Are poor mechanical issues the culprit? The best interest of the client should always be kept in mind and if done well and with a systematic approach, you can provide the top notch care that your clients deserve.

Rather than taking a situational approach to a referral, it has been my experience to set up a system of health care providers and include the trainer as part of that system. This network of providers are the Physician, Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, Massage Therapist, Trainer, Nutritionist, and also an alternative medical provider such as an acupuncturist or herbalist (I?m on the west coast, give me a break). Each of these practitioners can provide a piece of the puzzle that can provide the total care of the client. Each can cross refer and the client can enter the network from any of these entry points. No one provider, no matter how good they are, can provide the complete care that the client needs. There are many who think that they can provide the total care, but each has their area of specialty and training. Let?s take a look at how each of the providers can help the client and how the care can be intertwined with the Physician and Physical Therapist being the closest in working with the trainer.

Physician: The Physician is the provider that will take care of all medical needs and in many cases is the catalyst that insurance companies need if there tests, procedures, or Physical Therapy that will need to be paid for or reimbursed to the client. The Physician is also the one who clients will go to when there is a general health issue that needs to be addressed. The Physician, in many cases can make the direct referral to any of the practitioners. In the case of the trainer, the physician can provide the annual physical for the client, then based on the results, can say that some better diet and proper exercise may be the best thing to do at first prior to getting on any drug therapies for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, or obesity issues. This is where the referral to the trainer comes in. The trainer is someone who the client can trust easier because the referral came from the physician and it keeps the client from seeing the big box trainer at the chain store fitness center. If there is an injury that must be addressed, there may be a referral to the PT, with the recommendation that the client begin an exercise program after dealing with the initial injury or problem. The PT is aware of the referral to them AND the trainer and this will enable them to continue the process. We use a fitness prescription pad that the physician can write out for the client that will state whether they need conditioning, flexibility work, strength, or movement training. The physician can check off what the client needs. We have found a very high compliance rate when the physician uses this ?prescription? for fitness.

Physical Therapist: The PT is the provider that will deal with any of the musculoskeletal issues that the client is having. There may be some specific mobilization work, soft tissue work, or mechanical issues that maybe needed prior to the client working on a training program. The PT may also be one that the trainer refers to when they need answers to specific anatomical, mechanical, mobility, or stability issues. It is a great idea to have a PT that you can consult with, ask questions, and refer to when needed. PT?s a great source of information. It is very important that the trainer and PT work together in the client care. We have a system with our PT?s that was developed by Mark Looper, PT and Ken Cole, PT of Olympic Physical Therapy. The system uses color coded stages of work with a client/patient. When a client is injured we place them in a stage:

RED = Pain management and ROM work

YELLOW = Begin pain free movement of the area. May work on other areas outside the clinic.

GREEN = Aggressive movements still in the clinic. Regular, limited workouts with the trainer.

BLUE = Discharge from PT, full performance enhancement with the trainer.

During the phases of rehabilitation, there is communication throughout the network with the MD, PT, and trainer. This keeps everyone on the same page and gives the client/patient a good understanding and feeling of trust that they are getting complete care.

    Relationships

To establish these relationships, it is best to start with the PT. Find some PT?s in your area, ask around and find out who the better ones are. Make contact with the PT and get in to talk with them about the total care of the client and that you would like to establish a relationship so that you can have someone to refer to. A big mistake that many trainers make is just going in to look for clients and a referral source. Be sure that you are giving the impression (and also believe it) that you are looking to add a service for YOUR clients by having a PT to refer to. Ask to see if you can volunteer in the clinic or observe. As you establish this relationship and send them a few clients, your clients will speak for you and if you have good communication, the PT?s will send you post rehab clients. If you are a part time trainer and are wishing to move to full time in the future, see if you can get a part time job as an aide in a clinic. Think long term for your career and don?t shy away from the experience because it pays little. The payoff will come to you in knowledge.

The PT is also you?re in to the Physician. Most MD?s will not want to speak to a trainer directly unless they have an established relationship. Many of my clients are MD?s so that helps me quite a bit. PT?s regularly market to MD?s for their business and as the clients see the MD, they will refer to the PT. If you have the relationship established with the PT, it can carry over to the MD as well.

With the health care issues that are facing our country, good, established systems of care are in the best interest of any person. If the medical field recognizes the importance of regular exercise with a qualified trainer, there will be a greater chance that trainers will be considered a solid part of the preventative medicine cycle. We are seeing a larger blend of the Strength and Conditioning fields with the Physical Therapy field. Guys like Grey Cook and Gary Gray and certainly led the way in this direction. Recognizing the various roles that each part of a network can play are a big part of reaching the best goals for your clients. Maintaining your position as a professional will also beneficial in your marketing efforts and your reputation both in the training and medical fields.

Turkish PM talks Syria with Obama at White House

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Thursday that the U.S. and Turkey will keep ramping up pressure to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad from power, but there's "no magic formula" to stop his violence.

At a news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the White House Rose Garden, Obama says the only way to resolve the crisis is for Assad to hand over power to a transitional government.

"We're going to keep increasing the pressure on the Assad regime and working with the Syrian opposition," Obama said. "We both agree that Assad needs to go."

Erdogan says the U.S. and Turkey have overlapping goals when it comes to Syria. Neither leader mentioned that the U.S. and Turkey remain far apart on just how to handle Syria's bloody civil war. Erdogan did not directly answer a question about what he asked from Obama on Syria.

Obama said the United States can't act alone to bring peace to Syria and needs the cooperation of international partners.

"There's no magic formula for dealing with an extraordinarily violent and difficult situation like Syria," Obama said.

Erdogan is visiting Washington just days after two car bombs in Turkey killed dozens in the deadliest terrorist attack there in years. Turkish authorities have blamed Syrian intelligence, and Erdogan has been calling for more aggressive steps to topple Assad's government. Obama extended condolences for what he called the "outrageous bombings" and said the United States stands with Turkey in fighting terror threats.

But the Obama administration remains reluctant to take the kind of action Turkey would like to see, including establishing a no-fly zone in Syria.

The disagreement was unlikely to spoil a day of pomp for Erdogan, who arrived at the White House under the flags of a U.S. military honor guard lining the north driveway. He met with Obama in the Oval Office for three hours focusing largely on Mideast security issues, but Obama said they also agreed to create "a new high level committee" to focus on increasing trade and investment between the two countries.

Erdogan also was being treated to a formal lunch at the State Department lunch with Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry before his return to the White House for a working dinner with the president.

Despite differences over Syria, Erdogan will welcome the opportunity to showcase his close ties with Obama. He arrives after recently marking 10 years in office as a dominant figure in Turkish politics. As much as Erdogan wants the U.S. to exert greater power in Syria, the Obama administration sees Turkey as a critical broker on a host of issues in the region.

The administration recently negotiated a deal to repair ties between Turkey and Israel, which were severed following a 2010 Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in which eight Turks and a Turkish-American were killed. The administration hopes to see an understanding sealed during Erdogan's visit on compensation for the victims of the raid and their families. The U.S. sees reconciliation between Turkey and Israel as critical as it seeks to revitalize peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

Standing next to Obama, Erdogan made clear that he intends to carry through with a visit to the Gaza strip next month, despite objections from the U.S., Israel and the Palestinian authority, which fears the move will bolster Hamas. Erdogan said he would also visit the West Bank.

Later, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. remains opposed to any engagement with Hamas. Hamas, she told reporters, is a "foreign terrorist organization which remains a destabilizing force in Gaza and the region."

It is also looking for Turkish help in ramping up sanctions on Iran and in cooling ethnic tensions in Iraq. Both Turkey and the U.S. see an opportunity this year to restart talks on the reunification of Cyprus, an issue that is also likely to come up in talks between Obama and Erdogan. Cyprus was split in 1974, when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of a union with Greece. A Turkish Cypriot declaration of independence in 1983 is recognized only by Turkey, which maintains 35,000 troops there. Turkey doesn't recognize Cyprus as a sovereign country.

Following the recent terrorist attacks in Turkey, Erdogan and Obama also will look to step up cooperation on counterterrorism.

Finally, the U.S. administration is likely to reassure Erdogan that Turkey will not lose out as the administration seeks a massive free trade deal with the European Union. Obama may also offer praise for Erdogan's initiative to make peace with Kurdish rebels after a nearly 30-year battle.

New England Revolution v Seattle SoundersGetty Images

Soccer fans in America often have a chip on their shoulder about football.? And for good reason.? Football is the dominant sport in the country, soccer isn?t.

Then again, soccer is boring.? Football isn?t.

It creates potential friction where an NFL team also owns a professional soccer team.? In New England, the Krafts are getting the brunt of some of that friction via fans of the soccer team the Krafts own.

Julian Cardillo of the Boston Globe (via SportsBusiness Daily) writes that ?[i]t appears to many that the Revolution are the Kraft family?s second priority, rather than an equal investment, to the New England Patriots.?

If it appears that way, that appearance would be accurate.? The Patriots have become one of the elite franchises in the NFL, the premier professional sports league in the United States.? The Revolution are an also-ran, at best, in a league that is an also-ran, at best.

Revolution Brian Bilello seems to think that the griping comes from soccer?s anti-football bias.

?I think both the Kraft family and the Hunt family, because they have NFL sides as well, I think there?s a weird perception,? Bilello told Cardillo.? ?Both families have been involved with the sport since the very beginning.? The fact that they?re involved in the NFL, that hurts them.?

Still, a Sports Illustrated poll of anonymous players pegged the Krafts as the worst owners in the MLS, and players like Thierry Henry and David Beckham have balked at playing on the FieldTurf at Gillette Stadium.

?There?s a lot of great things about having the Krafts as owners,? Bilello said.? ?They?ve supported this league.? They do things behind the scenes not just for the Revolution, but for the sport of soccer in this country.?

None of that matters to the average soccer fan, who can?t understand why Americans haven?t embraced the sport the way the rest of the world has.

Meanwhile, we can?t understand why the rest of the world hasn?t embraced football the way Americans have.

Disgraced Cardinal O'Brien to leave Scotland for penance: Vatican

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Cardinal Keith O'Brien, who resigned as head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland after acknowledging sexual misconduct, will leave Scotland for months of "prayer and penance", the Vatican said on Wednesday.

A statement said O'Brien, who was Britain's most senior Catholic cleric until his resignation in February, would be leaving his country for the same reasons that he decided not to participate in the conclave that elected Pope Francis.

It said Francis had agreed with the decision but did not say whether it was the pope's idea that O'Brien should leave for what the Vatican said would be "several months for the purpose of spiritual renewal, prayer and penance".

It did not say where he was going.

O'Brien resigned as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh in February after three priests and one former priest from a Scottish diocese complained over incidents of sexual misconduct dating back to the 1980s.

He has apologized for sexual conduct which he said had "fallen below the standards expected of me".

PFT: Patriots cut lineman after diabetes diagnosis

    PollardGetty Images

Safety Bernard Pollard isn?t simply done talking about the Ravens.? He?s done talking to the Ravens.? Well, at least some of them.

Pollard tells 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore that he won?t be attending Baltimore?s post-Super Bowl visit to the White House.

?I?m not gonna be there,? Pollard said.? ?I gotta sit this one out, man.? I actually have a vacation with my family and then I?m coming back to get [my ring].? If I didn?t have a vacation, I wouldn?t come in anyway.?

    So what?s the problem?

?It?s not my teammates,? Pollard said.? ?It?s not my teammates at all.? I would celebrate with them any time, any day of the week I would celebrate with them.? But at the end of the day, I know what happened, I know what took place. . . . I?m sorry, I just don?t want to be in the room with certain people.?

Pollard didn?t name the ?certain people? with whom he doesn?t want to share space.? But he heaped praise on G.M. Ozzie Newsome and owner Steve Bisciotti, so it?s apparently not them.

?Ozzie is great,? Pollard said.? ?Ozzie is amazing.? I love Ozzie, man, he gave me an opportunity.? Mr.? Bisciotti.? It?s just one of those things where they made some moves, they cleaned house, Ozzie put together a really, really good defense as we see on paper right now.?

Pollard still seems to be particularly troubled by the situation that has been characterized in the media as ?practically a mutiny,? along with its potential link to his release.

?I?m just a player where you ask me my opinion, I?m gonna tell you,? Pollard said.? ?And for you to get upset or whatever afterwards, you know, you asked me.? That?s that. . . .? We were just asked our opinion about something.? And we let the coach know our opinion. . . .? It was us as players. . . .? We were asked, the floor was open.? And we responded, and let the coaches know how we felt, and that?s how it has to be as a football team.? We can?t walk around on eggshells as a football team.?

Though Pollard didn?t specifically mention coach John Harbaugh, it?s likely that he?s one of the people against whom Pollard holds a grudge.

Then again, Harbaugh and the Ravens ultimately may be in the right.? Pollard will never admit ? indeed, he may not even realize ? that he was out of line or over the top in anything he said or did while with the Ravens.? Still, Pollard has a reputation for being outspoken, for complaining, and for drawing too much attention to himself.

?Three teams in how many years,? one source said in the wake of Pollard?s release. ?Soon four.? What does that tell you??

The Ravens surely didn?t expect Pollard?s habit of complaining to suddenly change once he was released.? Still, if he can manage not to complain his way off the roster in Tennessee until 2014, it?ll be well worth the price of admission to see the Ravens and Titans get together in Baltimore.

Sentences continue in Minn. Somali terror case

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Two men who left Minnesota to join the terrorist group al-Shabab in Somalia were sentenced to three years in federal prison Tuesday, getting reduced sentences for their cooperation with the government's investigation into what has been called one of the largest efforts to recruit U.S. fighters into a foreign terror group.

Abdifatah Yusuf Isse and Salah Osman Ahmed both traveled to Somalia in 2007 and spent about a week in an al-Shabab training camp. They found a way to leave the camp once they learned what al-Shabab was all about.

They each pleaded guilty in 2009 to one count of providing material support to a terrorist group. They each faced a maximum of 15 years in prison. But prosecutors asked for sentences of around six to seven years because both cooperated with the investigation into recruiting and financing for al-Shabab.

U.S. District Judge Michael Davis gave the two men three years apiece, and they're expected to get credit for time served.

Later Tuesday, Davis handed down a 12-year sentence to Omer Abdi Mohamed, who has been characterized as a recruiter for al-Shabab in the U.S. He pleaded guilty in 2011 to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. He also faced a maximum of 15 years in prison but prosecutors asked for less time because of his cooperation.

Unlike several other defendants in the case, Mohamed was not accused of traveling to Somalia to fight for al-Shabab, though he admitted to helping some Minnesota men get plane tickets to Somalia. During last year's trial of another defendant, witnesses said Mohamed used his knowledge of the Quran to convince young men that they had a duty to fight.

His attorney denied that he played any role in recruiting. But after that trial, Mohamed was re-arrested when the court learned he was working at a school. At the time, Davis called him "a danger to the community."

An Ohio man who admitted that he helped raise money so others could travel from Minnesota to Somalia was also sentenced Tuesday.

Ahmed Hussein Mahamud received three years in prison. He pleaded guilty in 2012 to conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He lived in Eden Prairie until 2011, when he moved to Ohio.

Three more people face sentencing later this week in this case and a case on terror financing.

Davis handed down two sentences in the long-running case on Monday. A man who authorities say played a key role in funneling young men from Minnesota to al-Shabab got 20 years in prison, while a foot soldier for al-Shabab, who participated in an ambush on Ethiopian troops, got 10 years.

"I'm going to take a chance on you," Davis told Isse when granting him a lesser sentence.

He pointed to Isse's decision to leave the al-Shabab training camp: "You devised a scheme to get away. That told me a lot about you. ... If you had been involved in the ambush, you'd be doing a lot of time."

Davis did not explain the 12-year sentence he handed down to Mohamed, who asked him for mercy and said he never would want to harm the U.S.

"I made a terrible, a wrong," Mohamed told the judge. "I regret it."

The courtroom was packed with dozens of his supporters, while others had to wait downstairs. Defense attorney Peter Wold told the judge about 200 Somali community members had written letters to the court on his behalf, calling him respectful, kind and helpful.

"I have a very strong community that knows my heart," Mohamed said.

Authorities say that more than 20 young men left Minnesota to join al-Shabab starting in 2007, when small groups of local Somalis began holding secret meetings to talk about returning to their homeland to wage jihad against Ethiopians. The Ethiopian army was brought into Somalia in 2006 by its weak U.N.-backed government, but the troops were viewed by many Somalis as invaders.

Davis, who has overseen these cases for years, said he still struggles to understand what would make young men from good families, who came to Minnesota as refugees, choose to return to violence.

"We have to figure out what's going on and try to make sure this never happens again," he said.

Hands-on with NVIDIA Shield: NVIDIA's project turned product

Handson with NVIDIA's project turned product, NVIDIA Shield

NVIDIA's Project Shield now has an official name (NVIDIA Shield), a release window ("by the end of June") and a price tag ($350). That's a full $100 more than the PlayStation Vita -- arguably the most competent competition for Shield's hardcore skewing demographic -- and even a smidgen over the cost of various full-on game consoles. Despite the high barrier to entry, NVIDIA tells us Shield will follow the same annualized model that its mobile phone counterparts do: a new internal upgrade each year to keep up with the times. And we already know what that future looks like. Given all that baggage, we can't help but approach our last hands-on before launch with an eye toward whether or not this is a worthy purchase. Is NVIDIA's Shield worth getting in on early?
