Obama Could Be Descended From African Slave - Vosizneias

Washington - A team of genealogists has found evidence that President Barack Obama could be a descendent of an African slave - but not through the lineage of his black father, the most likely route researchers had followed and exhausted.

The link, genealogists with Ancestry.com said Monday, is, in fact, through an examination of his white mother?s family history.

?We were surprised and excited to make that connection,? said Joseph Shumway, a member of the Utah-based Ancestry.com team.

Obama?s father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. It had been generally assumed that the president had no slave ancestors because researchers couldn?t find it through the lineage of his father. However, no one had yet performed any exhaustive research into the lineage of his white mother, who turns out to have a mixed-raced family history.

Ancestry.com now said the maternal line traces back to one of the first documented African slaves in the U.S.

The company said Obama could be the 11th great-grandson of John Punch, an African slave in colonial Virginia. He is believed to have had children with a white woman, starting a family line that led generations later to Obama?s mother.

The White House declined comment Monday.

The Ancestry.com team used DNA analysis and marriage and property records to trace Obama?s maternal ancestry. The company says it can?t establish a definitive link because of gaps in family history. Researchers are missing a record connecting Punch to a presumed son who by his early 20s owned 450 acres and grew tobacco in Virginia.

The records pick up when a grandson of Punch petitioned a court to marry a white woman - and was turned down, presumably because the grandson appeared of mixed-raced heritage, said Elizabeth Shown Mills, a former president of the American Society of Genealogists.

The Ancestry.com findings make for a tantalizing tale that wasn?t uncommon in early colonial Virginia, and the team probably got it right, Mills said.

?They did the best job possible,? said Mills, who reviewed the findings at Ancestry.com?s request.

Ancestry.com said its team spent two years exploring Obama?s maternal line. The puzzle starts with Punch, who is presumed to have arrived in Virginia around 1640 from west Africa, initially as an indentured servant obligated to work for years to pay for his passage.

?He jumped the gun and took off,? Mills said. Punch was recaptured and made a slave for life. His punishment was tougher than white servants received for absconding, leading historians to call him the first African to be enslaved years before Virginia legalized slavery.

Nothing is known about Punch?s presumed relationship with a white woman. But his landowner son is presumed to be John Bunch, either because the mixed-raced family changed its name or because records transcribed it incorrectly, Shumway said. Researchers were able to make a definitive connection between the successive Bunch family line and Obama?s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, who died in 1995.

Researchers concluded John Bunch had to be the son of John Punch, Shumway said.

?He?s in the right place at the right time, and he?s the right age,? he said, adding that to this day, Bunch family members who appear white share the DNA profile of people in west Africa.

Mills said she was not surprised by the slavery link that came through the lineage of Obama?s white mother.

?There are many Americans discovering they have African ancestry. It?s something that is whispered, not something families want the world to know,? she said. ?This is what is so fascinating about American history. You see how people felt in the past, and how we think about it today.?

We are not connoisseurs ? far from it! For years we drank one kind of wine with almost everything, a reduced calorie jug wine. Then we couldn?t find it any more. Suddenly we needed to start buying ?real? wine. We tried random reds and whites (never expensive ? remember, we were used to diluted jug wine). Sometimes we found a bottle that tasted especially good with our dinner. Then we would drink the same thing at another meal, and it would taste awful. Clearly we needed some guidance.

That?s when I discovered What to What to Drink with What You Eat at the library. I found that, whatever we were having for dinner, I could look it up in the book?s detailed alphabetical list, and it would tell me the best possible beverage matches as well as others that would taste nearly as good, and perhaps a few to avoid. We went from just choosing between red and white, to choosing Pinot Noir versus Shiraz, or Sauvignon Blanc versus Chardonnay. And it really did make a difference in our enjoyment!

To give an example of how the book is set up, if I look up ?Chicken,? I can see that generally Chardonnay or Pinot Noir are good choices. If I narrow it down to ?Fried? chicken, Sauvignon Blanc is recommended, and Red Burgundy is recommended for ?Coq Au Vin.? For ?Tikka Masala? (Indian-style butter chicken), beer, especially wheat beer, is recommended as well as several wines, both red and white. There is a hierarchy of how well a beverage will go with a particular dish, the better choices indicated by the typeface in bold or all caps, with an asterisk for the best possible pairings.

Another major section of the book is a list according to beverage. So, for exampe, if someone leaves you a six-pack of stout, you will get maximum enjoyment if you drink it with oysters, and it also goes well with dark chocolate desserts. A Spanish Rioja wine will be heavenly with lamb, and so forth.

Other sections of the book discuss general rules of food pairings, what wines to keep on hand, and how to select and serve beverages, including not only wine, but beer, water, tea and coffee. The final section gives favorite menu pairings from the experts.

In 1998 I apparently became an entrepreneur! I had an idea, found the resources and then set out to make a difference and build a company.

In 1998 I was a small business owner, not an entrepreneur. Several years later I became an entrepreneur.

Like many of you, building a business as an owner is done as much through passon and commitment to creating change and making a difference as it is through skills and ability. IN 1998 I didn't have the skills but I had the passion, drive, tenacity and a vision.

My vision was that the world could now be connected, in real-time, on demand, through personal choice. It was a new world where individuals could build personal brands and personal networks. A world where the 'good' rise to the top, not those who manipulate, lie, abuse, focus on monopolistic behaviour and greed.

A distributed world, where ideas are shared, innovation saves companies and behaviour changes because the connectivity of the world highlights those who are not good to be in business with and highlights the integrity, values and ethics of people. Through online search, we can see what is written and share about others and decide if that person suits our own values. What an amazing revolution in business to be part of.. and we are all part of it, together.

So, the spirit of a 21st century 'connected' entrepreneur must be a different. they must have different values and drivers, or do they?

I have never been prouder of being an entrepreneur as I am now, all around me, everyday on Ecademy I witness the spiri of 21st Century Entrepreneurialism, focused on sharing, collaborating, working together on shared visions. Ensuring that values are central to leadership and communication.

Last night as I watched the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics I saw the history of UK wealth and progress, my father was in awe of the world class show, sitting next to me and as the Industrial Revolution was depicted with the tall Mills coming out of the ground my dad turned to me and said 'the dark satanic mills", it made me shudder, I thought about how hard those days were for those who were not part of the shift, the loss of air, the loss of green fields. That was progress then. progress now is that we can return to being in control of our own lives, work for ourselves, share our success with others rather than control them, sit in our homes if we wish and work via the Internet, not be judged on how many staff we control or the size of our wealth. Wealth can be discreet and can be created to make a difference to many more than just ourselves.

I feel it is a good time to be an entrepreneur. When I meet people just entering the self employed world following redundancy, or young people, who cannot find jobs I say grab the opportunity to build your brand and your future, enjoy it, drive it and lets ensure the values you hold, knowing that being Open, Random and Supportive with others is actually more fundamental to business growth than many have yet discovered. Those people still in those 'dark satanic mills' of the 20th Century ways of business, when they wake up and see the air we are breathing, oh boy, their respect and desire to learn from all of us will be wonderful.

France to pressure Russia, China on Syria: Hollande

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande said on Saturday he would try again to convince Russia and China to support harder sanctions against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in order to break a diplomatic deadlock and prevent more bloodshed.

"I will once more address Russia and China so that they recognize there would be chaos and civil war if Bashar al-Assad isn't soon stopped," Hollande said, speaking to the press during a visit to a farm in the southwestern town of Monlezun.

"The regime of Bashar al-Assad knows it is doomed and so it will use force until the very end," he said. "The role of the member states of the U.N. Security Council is to step in as quickly as possible."

Western powers have thus far been unsuccessful in ending an impasse at the United Nations over further pressure on al-Assad. Earlier this month, Hollande said he was trying to persuade Russia and China to forgo their insistence on shielding the leader from additional sanctions.

Rebels dismayed over US statement on Syrian conflict

The key city of Aleppo has come under ferocious assault, bombarded by fighter jets and machine gun fire. NBC's Richard Engel reports from northern Syria.

NORTHERN SYRIA ? Syrian rebels are dismayed by the U.S. response to the stepped-up fighting around the commercial capital of Aleppo.

What is the United States saying? Are they not listening? Do they want us all to die? ? These are just a few reactions to what in the eyes of the Syrian rebels looked like a weak and confused American position on the ongoing war.

The rebels, who are battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, are specifically reacting to statements from State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.? On Thursday she said Washington is ?deeply concerned? about the threat of potential massacres in Aleppo, but that the United States will not assist in the supply of arms to the opposition.

Engel: Syrian regime's thugs face retribution?

?We do not believe that pouring more fuel on this fire is going to save lives," she said, adding that there had not been the kind of ?groundswell call for external support" seen elsewhere.

Syria's commercial capital has been attacked again by government forces. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Yesterday, I met one of his neighbors, Umm Ahmed.? She says she?s 105 years old, the oldest woman in her village.? She?s nearly deaf.? Her eyes are cloudy with cataracts.? She has shrapnel in her leg from a Syrian artillery shell that exploded by her home.? Her son, 74 years old, lost a leg. Her other son was killed by Syrian forces; her friend, a woman of 85, had her house burned by government troops.?

The young rebel who was so surprised by U.S. statement says he wants weapons to defend his neighbors and free his country from an army that he says is attacking the Syrian people.? His unit is armed mostly with homemade bombs and a few rifles.?

He doesn?t understand how giving him the ability to defend himself and 105-year-old Umm Ahmed, who still walks everyday even with an injured leg, is ?pouring fuel on the fire.?? The fire in Syria is already burning.

Umm Ahmed, 105 years old, is a resident of a village in Northern Syria who was has shrapnel in her leg from a Syrian artillery shell that exploded by her home.

As for the groundswell, every rebel I?ve spoken to for the last month ? each one I?ve quoted in articles or seen quoted in articles written by other reporters ??has asked for outside help.? The rebels don?t want American troops on the ground, they want to fight to free the country themselves, but they do want U.S. assistance in obtaining arms.

LONDON (AP) ? With the Olympic Games as a backdrop, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Thursday plunged into a series of meetings with British leaders, including Prime Minister David Cameron.

The likely GOP nominee sought to send a message that he recognizes the close bonds between the U.S. and its top ally ? and to project an image of leadership.

"The world is a tumultuous and dangerous place," Romney said Thursday. "And certainly in many of the regions around the world we have great interests in having a common effort in seeing greater peace and prosperity." As he met with British leaders past and present, the Republican also praised "the unique relationship that exists between our nations, our commitment to common values, our commitment to peace in the world and a desire to see a stronger and growing economy."

Romney, whose decades in private business gave him ample exposure to international affairs, is a former one-term governor untested on the world's political stage. He hopes to convince voters back home that he is no novice on foreign affairs and that they should elect him as president in a complex world and with the U.S. facing a myriad of security threats.

Meeting with British officials is typically one of the first priorities of any new president, and establishing those relationships beforehand can help smooth any transition. It's not unusual for American presidential candidates to meet with British leaders during the campaign; Obama did so when he took a trip abroad as the likely Democratic nominee in 2008.

Romney's weeklong overseas trip will also take him to Israel and Poland.

As Thursday began, former Prime Minister Tony Blair hosted Romney at his private office few blocks off Hyde Park. The former Labour Party prime minister now serves as a special envoy to the Middle East, and the Romney campaign said the two men discussed the Middle East peace process, the situation in Syria, Iran and the wider region. They also discussed economic issues facing both countries, and chatted about the upcoming Olympic competitions.

Romney also will spend part of his time in London raising money and highlighting a key part of his resume ? the successful Salt Lake City Olympics he managed ? with an appearance Friday at the opening ceremonies of the London Games.

This isn't Romney's first meeting with Cameron; the two also talked during a Romney visit to London in 2011. This year, Cameron traveled to the U.S., where he met Obama and attended a state dinner in Washington but did not meet with Romney.

Romney's meeting with a deputy prime minister is somewhat unusual. It's happening because Britain has a coalition government, and Clegg's Liberal Democrats govern alongside Cameron's Conservative party.

The meetings come a day after the Daily Telegraph newspaper published a story quoting an unidentified Romney campaign adviser saying the Republican believes the U.S. relationship with Britain is special because of shared "Anglo-Saxon heritage" and the White House doesn't appreciate that shared history.

Romney, however, quickly distanced himself from any such view.

"I don't agree with whoever that adviser might be," Romney told NBC News, "but do agree that we have a very common bond between ourselves and Great Britain."

Nonetheless, Vice President Joe Biden and top Obama aides criticized Romney. "The comments reported this morning are a disturbing start to a trip designed to demonstrate Gov. Romney's readiness to represent the United States on the world's stage," Biden said.

Later Thursday, Romney planned to hold a high-dollar fundraiser at the swanky Mandarin Oriental hotel in London's tony Knightsbridge district. One of the hosts of that fundraiser, former Barclays CEO Bob Diamond, withdrew from the event after he resigned in the wake of a rate-rigging scandal wracking British banks.
