Turning to old crop varieties for tough times

A new project led by Bioversity International reconnects farmers with older crop varieties developed over millennia ? but never bred by scientists ? that may help them adapt to changing climate conditions.

Ethiopian farmers walk in their wheat field. For centuries, farmers have eked out a living in Ethiopia's central lowlands, tending tiny plots of maize, wheat, or barley. Climate change threatens their livelihoods but a return to old crop varieties may be an answer.

How will Ethiopian farmers cope with the climatic conditions that are likely to prevail in 20 or 30 years time? One of the answers lies in an unexpected place: the genetic diversity of crops stored in the country?s own gene banks.

Traditionally, gene banks have been established to store material for plant breeders to use when developing new varieties, not for direct distribution of seeds to farmers.

However, a new project led by Bioversity International, a center of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is reconnecting farmers with landraces. These are varieties developed by farmers over millennia ? but never been bred by scientists ? that have been largely lost from the landscape.

Researchers working with the "Seeds for Needs" project, which is jointly implemented with Ethiopia's Institute for Biodiversity Conservation and the National Agricultural Research Institute, have developed a tool to help farmers choose varieties to suit their future needs.

The research initially focused on providing new varieties of barley and durum wheat to 100 women farmers at three sites of varying elevation.

During the first phase of the project, information about more than 12,500 samples of seeds of different varieties was gathered to identify the ones from areas currently experiencing the climatic conditions ? in terms of rainfall and temperature ? projected to occur at the pilot sites in a generation?s time.

The most promising 100 varieties of each crop were then tested on-farm by the women, using their land and labor.

After the first growing season, the women selected the varieties with the traits they considered most valuable. These were then distributed to other women within their communities to be grown during the next cropping season.

Even though the women did not specifically choose varieties for their ability to cope with future climatic conditions, the initial selection provided them with a range of seeds and options that they didn't have before.

"If they grow a few varieties that are tolerant of climate change, then they will be in better shape to face the future than they would be otherwise," said Laura Snook, an expert on forest genetic resources with Bioversity.

The project ?is also drawing the attention of agricultural ministries and research institutions to the important role gene banks can play in climate change adaptation strategies," she said.

In Papua New Guinea, farmers and scientists are using a similar methodology to identify varieties of sweet potato and yam ? both crops that can?t be stored or sown as seed and are instead reproduced as clones of the parent plan t? that will help farmers cope with climate change. ?Seeds for Needs? projects have also been launched in Mali and India.

While in some areas of the world farmers will be able to adapt to climate change by switching the crop breeds they use, in other areas they may have to plant different crops altogether. In Colombia, for example, farmers in some regions have had to abandon growing coffee due to rising temperatures and are now planting crops such as peppers and pineapples.

In other areas, farmers may have to abandon activities altogether if the climate becomes too harsh for farming. The CGIAR, through its research program under Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), is working worldwide to understand not only how climate change will impact crops, fisheries, livestock, and forests, but also to help develop and disseminate the best opportunities for farmers to adapt to, and help mitigate, climate change.

Real Estate Tips: Types of Foreclosures

If you are one of the many homeowners who is continuing to struggle with making your mortgage payment, a foreclosure may be an inevitable part of your future. While no one wants to default on a loan and face the consequences of a foreclosure, it is always in your best interest to learn as much about the process as you possibly can. One step in learning about the process is to gain a better understanding of the types of foreclosures that you could be facing. Whether regarding Nashville Condos or?Warner Robins Real Estate, here is a look at the two basic legal forms of foreclosure that you may encounter.

Nonjudicial Foreclosure

Real Estate Tips: Types of ForeclosuresWith a nonjudicial foreclosure, the bank or lender receives the power of sale after you have defaulted on your loan. A nonjudicial foreclosure will typically occur after you fail to make loan payments over a period of time. After you fail to make your payments, you will receive a notice of default. This notice will then be recorded with the county recorder of deeds. After the notice is recorded, you will have a period of time during which you can reinstate the loan by paying the amount due as well as the amount the bank spent related to your foreclosure.

If you are not able to pay your loan within a certain amount of time, the bank will give you notice that it intends to sell your property. The bank will then sell the property and use the money it receives to pay off the mortgage loan. In most states, the bank cannot require you to pay the difference between the foreclosure sale price and the amount you still owed on the loan.

In all, the nonjudicial foreclosure process typically takes just one or two months to complete. This is partially because the bank does not need to obtain a court order before it can sell your home.

Judicial Foreclosure

The primary difference between a nonjudicial and a judicial foreclosure is that the bank must go through the court as part of the process. While the exact procedures may vary somewhat from state to state, the first step typically involves sending a notice of default to the homeowner. If you fail to repay the loan within a certain period of time, the bank must then file a court complaint. A lis pendens is then filed in the recorder???s office to let anyone who is interested in the party know that foreclosure proceedings have started. Next, a settlement will be held and a judgment will be entered. After the property is sold, the bank can get a deficiency judgment against you if the sale price is less than what you owed.

Flu immunity is affected by how many viruses actually cause the infection

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Not only does the type of flu virus affect a patient's outcome, but a new research report appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that the number of viruses involved in the initial infection may be important too. Scientists from Canada found that when mice were infected by relatively high concentrations of the flu virus, they not only developed immunity against the virus that infected them, but this also promoted the generation of a type of immune cell in the lungs poised to rapidly react against infections with other strains of the flu, as well. Mice that were infected with a relatively low concentration of the virus developed weaker immunity against the strain that infected them, did not build up this crucial population of immune cells in the lungs, and showed only delayed immunity toward other flu strains. This discovery could pave the way for new prophylactic strategies to fight flu infections and provides a novel basis for vaccine design.

"Hopefully, the findings of our study will help to develop better vaccine preparations that will be more effective in inducing protective cellular immunity to fight against infectious pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi," said Martin V. Richter, Ph.D., the lead researcher involved in the work from the Department of Medicine at the Universit? de Sherbrooke and Centre de Recherche Clinique ?tienne-Le Bel in Qu?bec, Canada.

To make this discovery, scientists infected two groups of mice with two different infectious doses of influenza A (H3N2) and analyzed several aspects of inflammation and immunity during the initial infection as well as during reinfection with a different strain of virus. The first group was infected with a low dose of the virus whereas the second group was infected with a high dose of the same virus. Mice infected with the high dose showed increased morbidity, a greater degree of lung inflammation, but also a greater recruitment of influenza-specific immune cells (CD8+ T cells) into their lungs, and a better generation of long-lived respiratory CD8+ T cells called memory CD8+ T cells. In contrast, the mice infected with the low dose of virus suffered less from primary infection but all of the immune responses were induced to lower levels. Consequently, reinfection of mice, 60 days after primary infection, revealed that mice previously infected with a higher dose showed increased protection due to greater magnitude of the memory CD8+ T cell pool present in their lungs before reinfection. This is the first demonstration that the initial infectious dose has an important impact on the generation of specific types of immune memory cells and on the degree of immune protection against reinfection.

"Recent experience with emerging and mutating strains of influenza virus highlight how very few changes in this virus could lead to a catastrophic flu crisis," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "While considerable efforts have been invested in predicting new emerging flu strains for our yearly vaccines, it is impossible to prepare for every possible way the flu can mutate. This new research shows that it may be possible to enhance current vaccines to offer broader protection against different flu strains, known and unknown."

Paint-on lithium battery can be applied to virtually any surface

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Researchers at Rice University have developed a lithium-ion battery that can be painted on virtually any surface.

The rechargeable battery created in the lab of Rice materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan consists of spray-painted layers, each representing the components in a traditional battery. The research appears? June 28 in Nature's online, open-access journal Scientific Reports.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Ajayan, Rice's Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and of chemistry. "There has been lot of interest in recent times in creating power sources with an improved form factor, and this is a big step forward in that direction."

Lead author Neelam Singh, a Rice graduate student, and her team spent painstaking hours formulating, mixing and testing paints for each of the five layered components -- two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.

The materials were airbrushed onto ceramic bathroom tiles, flexible polymers, glass, stainless steel and even a beer stein to see how well they would bond with each substrate.

In the first experiment, nine bathroom tile-based batteries were connected in parallel. One was topped with a solar cell that converted power from a white laboratory light. When fully charged by both the solar panel and house current, the batteries alone powered a set of light-emitting diodes that spelled out "RICE" for six hours; the batteries provided a steady 2.4 volts.

The researchers reported that the hand-painted batteries were remarkably consistent in their capacities, within plus or minus 10 percent of the target. They were also put through 60 charge-discharge cycles with only a very small drop in capacity, Singh said.

Each layer is an optimized stew. The first, the positive current collector, is a mixture of purified single-wall carbon nanotubes with carbon black particles dispersed in N-methylpyrrolidone. The second is the cathode, which contains lithium cobalt oxide, carbon and ultrafine graphite (UFG) powder in a binder solution. The third is the polymer separator paint of Kynar Flex resin, PMMA and silicon dioxide dispersed in a solvent mixture. The fourth, the anode, is a mixture of lithium titanium oxide and UFG in a binder, and the final layer is the negative current collector, a commercially available conductive copper paint, diluted with ethanol.

"The hardest part was achieving mechanical stability, and the separator played a critical role," Singh said. "We found that the nanotube and the cathode layers were sticking very well, but if the separator was not mechanically stable, they would peel off the substrate. Adding PMMA gave the right adhesion to the separator." Once painted, the tiles and other items were infused with the electrolyte and then heat-sealed and charged.

Singh said the batteries were easily charged with a small solar cell. She foresees the possibility of integrating paintable batteries with recently reported paintable solar cells to create an energy-harvesting combination that would be hard to beat. As good as the hand-painted batteries are, she said, scaling up with modern methods will improve them by leaps and bounds. "Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it would be very easy to incorporate this into industry," Singh said.

The Rice researchers have filed for a patent on the technique, which they will continue to refine. Singh said they are actively looking for electrolytes that would make it easier to create painted batteries in the open air, and they also envision their batteries as snap-together tiles that can be configured in any number of ways.

"We really do consider this a paradigm changer," she said.

Pets and More Pets ? Dogs in the Workplace

A new report from the Virginia Commonwealth University seems to sing the praises of pets on the job. Workplaces are a selection of the most stressful places there are, at least for some individuals. So bringing a dog to work might possibly be able to help ease workday stress, which raises productivity and general health, as well. On the days in the study when employees brought their pets, their levels of stress were visibly lower and job satisfaction higher than when the puppies stayed at home.

All this goes to show just how attached pet owners can be to their dogs. Those that failed to even own pets were regularly seen asking their fellow workers to take their dogs out for walks on breaks. Even non-pet owners wanted to jump in on the action!

If taking a pet to work can so notably lower stress levels and make the day nicer, it?s no wonder that so many pet owners love to take their dogs with them. Pet fanciers take their pups everywhere from runs to the market to long vacations. And folks who work hard often play just as hard, too. They need dog products that are built to keep their dogs safe and cheerful while on a busy schedule with their owners.

One of the very best things a loving pet owner can do is make sure that all dogs are secured safely while traveling, whether small distances or long. A comfortable and secure dog harness and seat belt restraint can keep your dog secure in a moving car without making your pet feel too constrained.

Your pet does so much for you each day, like lowering your stress and making you cheerful, often without you even realising the physiology at work. Care for your dog with a quality dog harness and seat belt restraint to return the favor, and you and your pet can go and play anywhere comfortably and safely.

Selling Your House ? FSBO or Real estate agent? - Craft Christmas ...

Jun 25, 2012 by LeeSrJrMP

We always feel relaxed in our own property. Like they say, there is no place like home. Without a doubt, that may be true. But what if you wish to promote your own house? Selling your home can be challenging, because you cannot see your house as being a property to sell. You are used to the way the house looks and performs and there is no problem with which. But buyers see things in a different way, for example is the house still suitable to live in?, may be the home neat and tidy?, will the home have a large area for the entire family?, is it in a secure and safe neighborhood? etc.

Marketing your own house could be entertaining or even a stressful task because you need to ready your house and repair the problems of your house. It is possible to choose on your own whether or not you wish to sell your home or you might want to use a realtor to sell your house. Every single option has its own positives and negatives. Because it is your property, you can create a decision on your own.

If you do not wish to be bothered together with selling your house, and then use a realtor to trade your property immediately with an affordable price that you or the agent recommend. The realtor will take care of all the paperwork and hang up the meetings in between you and the buyer. The agent also works on the open house if you do not have time to get it done. Even if you will lose some money with the realtor, at least your house will get sold in the price that you desire and also you do not need to think about the documents and the permits possibly. Everything is organized along with handled by the agent.

But what if you want to sell your own house all on your own? It is still possible, actually, you can save more money since you do not have to waste your cash on a realtor. Nevertheless, selling your own house on your own requires extra work and further time. The fun facts are that you can stress your house?s greatest factors to the buyers and negotiate the purchase price right with them without any third-party such as the realtor. You will find specifics of selling your own house online or in a paper. You need to be wise in selling your own house.

sexuality empowerment - How Do I Get More Confidence?

I have been teaching sexuality for so long and over the years when I ask people--women in particular--what they think they need in order to feel sexually empowered, without reservation, the number one answer I get the most is "I want more confidence" or "I want more sexual confidence." My conclusion? Most people want more confidence!

Coming from a place of insecurity, which is the opposite of confidence, doesn't feel good and usually does not get you what you want.

It's very hard, if not impossible, to create the relationships of your dreams from a place of insecurity. Without a healthy dose of confidence, you have a really hard time standing up for yourself or asking for what you need in your relationships, and sometimes you get walked all over because of it. Not fun.

It's hard to build a really successful business or career from a place of insecurity. If you are feeling frustrated because your career feels stagnant or you are playing small and not taking steps to do the work you feel you are here to do in the world the way to change it is to have the confidence to do it. It's so painful to watch how people play small and keep themselves from having their dreams.

It's hard to ask for the money you deserve from a place of insecurity. Maybe you want a raise, or you want to raise your prices if you have your own business and you lack the confidence to ask for what you know you are worth.

It's definitely hard to get the sex and the sexual satisfaction you want and deserve from a place of insecurity. You might be feeling sexually frustrated, not having orgasms, not feeling like you get as much from sex as your partners, or feel stuck in not being able to ask for what you need sexually and so you aren't getting it. I find that many people who are powerful in other areas of their lives, (particularly women) just lack the ability to get their needs met in the bedroom and often feel really small and dissatisfied there.

Confidence is often talked about like it's a pill you can take, or like it's something you acquire in one big shot and you are good. But it's not. It's something you have to work at. It's a process to develop confidence.

This is why I began to look at people's confidence and scrutinize how their confidence operates . . . I know from all my years of work that there are patterns around people's ways of expressing and using their confidence and I've learned a few things about what makes people tick, what their needs and fears are, and what will help them get to the next level in their life, love, work and play.

I developed the 5 Confidence Types? out of my work with people. You may have a clear dominant type or you might be a combination of types. Most people do have a dominant type that is your home base right now--your default or the place you are most comfortable, or uncomfortably comfortable. You can learn skills to help you bring more of the energy of some of the other types into your repertoire if you want that, and you can also work on understanding how your type operates so you know what to work on enhancing and what to be careful of.

I want you to find out what your Confidence Type? is! This is not a one-size fits all operation. We don't all operate with the same brand of confidence. We have varying strengths and vulnerabilities and I want to help you define where you are now and how to move your confidence to the place where you want to go. I am so excited about helping people build their confidence. I know how important the element of confidence is in your being able to create the relationships, professional success, and sexual life you want.

The response to the Confidence Quiz has been really overwhelmingly positive in what it is doing for individuals and in the conversations they are able to have with other people in their lives. Do yourself a favor and learn more about how your own confidence operates so that you can take more control of your life and start living the way you really want to because you have the confidence to do it!

Air Mail for iPhone and iPad Offers Bursts of Fun

Air Mail. Image from iTunes. It's rare to find entertainment-for-all-ages titles in the iOS App Store. Typically, there's little room between the throngs of uber-casual titles and the hardcore ports to find a game that has both the depth and breadth to be truly recommendable to all types of gamers. But Air Mail, a new flight simulator published by Chillingo (who discovers mobile studio talent better than anyone), might be just such a standout.

You play as an upstart delivery pilot stationed on an island chain who must use his pilot skills to deliver cargo, fish, put out fires, and eventually freedom fight over several wide open worlds. While lacking in polish, this flight simulator is a charming and original ride.

The initial training missions will get you acquainted with Air Mail's basic controls. But discovering whether you prefer tilt or button controls, how to successfully execute hairpin turns, and how to use the various camera angles to your advantage are all things that you'll learn how to do over the several hour campaign.

The campaign does a good job of mixing up the level selection, with visually diverse worlds, and different characters move in and out of the story. My frustration with Air Mail is that many of its missions are similar: Collect X number of Y object or pick up Z object before landing. The war-themed missions require you to fly through enemy fire-adding some much needed excitement-but this is a flight delivery simulator, so don't expect dogfights or loop-de-loops.

In between the cute artwork and aww-shucks attitude of Air Mail is a surprisingly dark story of a civilian airmail pilot who challenges a rival nation's resource-gathering. That ignites a war, forcing the pilot to defend his adopted home from annihilation. And when I say "annihilation," I don't mean you're flying some abstract mission to get a message to the front lines. I mean you're flying through flak, around zeppelins, and over a city in flames. Air Mail packs a surprising emotional impact to see the town you flew over only missions before now in flames as bombs are dropped on it-and here you are, without a weapon.

Air Mail. Image from iTunes. The core gameplay is built around simple aviation, and while its physics are more on the cartoonish side, they're forgiving enough to allow you to avoid most obstacles. Meanwhile, the sound effects do the job, but you'll quickly get exasperated by the ethnically stereotyped narration, which can be mildly annoying at times to downright insulting at others. The art style is equally hit or miss-the actual game graphics are quite impressive, reminiscent of the golden age of Rare entertainment environments on the N64 platform. The mission briefings, however, speak to the game's low budget. The character designs are seemingly for a cuter, different game and the haphazard animation style and ill-timed attempts at humor make you itch to get back into the action.

The game's three modes-Mission Mode, Express Delivery, and Explore Mode-provide several hours of quality gameplay, though how much you'll really want to challenge the clock or find items will ultimately determine how much you'll play any other mode than the core campaign missions.

Chillingo specializes in finding quality studios with quirky, deep games and then gives them a much wider audience. Air Mail is a fun, light game that is easy to enjoy for ten minute bursts, but its appeal may wear thin for longer gaming sessions. While it shoots for a Disney-like touch, Air Mail's humor and strange story ultimately makes it a bit rougher around the edges-and perhaps more memorable as a result.

In 'grief and shock,' Radiohead delays tour dates

Reuters

The stage at Downsview Park in Toronto is shown in this combination photograph before (top) and after it collapsed on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

By Rolling Stone

Radiohead released a statement Thursday regarding the stage collapse before the group's recent Toronto show that took the life of drum technician Scott Johnson and injured three other crew members. ?The statement notes that the collapse destroyed much of the group's elaborate light show and stage set-up, parts of which are decades old and will take time to replace, forcing them to postpone seven upcoming European tour dates.

Radiohead push boundaries, salute Jack White at Bonnaroo

"Whilst we all are dealing with the grief and shock ensuing from this terrible accident there are also many practical considerations to deal with," the statement read before listing upcoming shows in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland that will be postponed. The band plans to announce the new dates on June 27th, and they will also offer information for fans who will be unable to attend the rescheduled shows and will be seeking refunds.

"We will make every effort to offer the fans the very best show possible under the circumstances -- thanks for your understanding and support," the statement closed.

Radiohead debut 'Full Stop' in Tinley Park

Along with the rescheduled dates, it was reported on Tuesday that the Canadian Ministry of Labour identified four companies as being directly responsible for the stage collapse, including Radiohead's own Ticker Tape Touring LLP, as well as Toronto-based Optex Staging and Services, Nasco Staffing Solutions and concert promoter Live Nation.

The number of companies involved in putting on the show, however, has made the investigation a bit complex. "We?re still trying to figure out who owns what, who?s responsible for what," Ministry spokesperson Matt Blajer told the Toronto Star. "You?ve got lighting technicians, sound technicians, the band?s people -- we?re trying to figure out who worked for whom."

On Sunday, following the tragic events at Downsview Park, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway wrote on the band's website: "We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."

Denver Mayor Hancock faces questions about aide he fired

An investigation into alleged sexual harassment that led to the firing of an aide to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock included an audio recording that city officials have refused to release.

The city's decision to withhold the recording came in response to a Denver Post records request.

Wayne McDonald, a longtime friend of Hancock's, was fired last month from his $85,000-a-year job as an appointee after allegations of "serious misconduct" were lodged against him.

Hancock is not on the recording, said Amber Miller, Hancock's press secretary. The administration would not say who is on the recording.

Miller said the "recordings are among the rec-ords that were withheld by the city due to laws that prohibit their release."

The city's attorneys, in denying The Post's request for the recordings, cited a section of state law that prohibits disclosure of "any records of sexual harassment complaints and investigations."

Hancock on Friday morning faced the news media a day after news broke that he had fired McDonald. He said it was tough to do but that the action was in "the best interest of the city."

During his presentation of a proposed tax measure for November's ballot, Hancock faced multiple questions about McDonald.

"I've managed people, and I have never been in a place and space where it is OK to talk publicly about personnel matters," Hancock said. "We had received an accusation, which we looked into immediately, and we acted. I think everything that needed to be said has been said publicly. There really isn't anything more."

The mayor's office on Thursday, responding to an open-records request from The Post, said serious allegations of misconduct were made about McDonald on May 16. The next day, an internal review was conducted, and McDonald was fired May 21.

A female police officer at the center of the investigation was transferred to a new assignment after the allegations surfaced.

Hancock said his administration will be "diligent in protecting the privacy right of Wayne McDonald, as well as the other employee."

McDonald's attorney, Anne Sulton, said in a statement that she hopes journalists continue to search for the truth.

"Mr. McDonald denies being involved in any misconduct," she said. "He is weighing his options as we move forward to clear his name."

Sulton said she will ask the city attorney to "place a litigation hold on all documents, e-mails, tapes, calendars and other materials related to this case." She said she will ask the court next week for an order preserving those materials.

"The public has a right to know what happened, and my client has a right to take actions that will clear his name," she said.

Roleplay buddy?

This isn't for a mentor, but someone else who also wants to improve their skills, so you shouldn't consider yourself an expert to team up with me. Basically, we participate in roleplays together to help each other out. For example, if we need help writing fight scenes, then we'd write a fight scene between us. We wouldn't need a long plot, instead just posting stuff for practice. That's not to say that we couldn't get involved in some longer roleplay.

So, is anyone interested?

WWE superstar John Cena grants 300th Make-A-Wish

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? WWE superstar John Cena granted his 300th wish to a 7-year-old Pennsylvania boy with a spinal condition, continuing his streak as the most popular celebrity granter in Make-A-Wish Foundation history.

Jonny Littman wanted to meet his hero, and the WWE accommodated that wish Monday night before an episode of "Raw" live from New York's Long Island. But Jonny got a bonus to his wish.

On Wednesday morning, Jonny was being interviewed on "Good Morning America" when Sam Champion asked him about his green T-shirt. After Jonny told him it was John Cena, Champion asked if anyone knew the WWE Superstar.

The pro wrestler and actor walked out to Jonny's surprise and presented him with another gift. This time it was tickets for him and his family to attend the 1,000th episode of the WWE show.

To put Cena's 300 granted wishes in perspective, Michael Jordan has granted around 200 and Kobe Bryant is in the 100-wish range.

"I truly give hats off to Make-A-Wish for keeping statistics," Cena said Monday before the show. "They had a nice little celebration for me at 200, and I humbly said we should do it at 1,000.

"We're just getting started," he said enthusiastically.

But Cena was clearly touched by the latest one.

"I'm just flattered completely that I could be the wish," he said.

Jonny, from Hop Bottom, Pa., has severe congenital malformation and spina bifida and uses a wheelchair. He spoke to his hero for a few minutes and took some pictures with him.

He even put on his WWE Championship belt. His mother, Ruth, says his surgeons wore it during his last surgery.

After signing T-shirts and WWE merchandise and presenting him with a videogame system, the superstar graciously walked out of the room. Cena prepared for his featured match, and Jonny and his family waited to go into the Nassau Coliseum for a live televised weekly show, "Raw."

After he left the room, Jonny chanted: "Cena. John Cena. Cena."

Cena is following a WWE tradition of granting wishes. The organization grants about 140 wishes per year between requests to meet WWE Superstars or attend its live shows. The tradition started in the early 1980s with Hulk Hogan being the most requested.

And while these wishes make children with life-threatening medical conditions feel good for the moment, organizers say they also have a lasting effect.

Make-A-Wish CEO David Williams cites cases in which seriously ill children clung to life for weeks and sometimes months in anticipation of the wish. Surveys by his organization found that many doctors and nurses felt the wish had a physical benefit to the patient, and most families said a wish strengthened the entire family at a fragile time.

"They said it was a very much needed boost," Williams said.

The organization has 30,000 volunteers who help carry out the wishes. Corporations, airlines, hotels, and other donors assure that most wish requests are met.

Still, Williams said, "Every year in the U.S., 27,000 are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, and the organization serves about 14,000. For every family that we're helping, there's a child that we are not."

As for Cena, "I know this is the entertainment business and there will come a time when I'm not requested, but I'll still be donating my time and money, I love what they do."

Microsoft confirms no upgrade path to Windows Phone 8, unveils 7.8 for legacy devices

Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 7.8 for legacy devices

The debate can now be laid to rest: devices currently running on Windows Phone 7.5 will not be on the receiving end of the long-awaited Apollo update (aka Windows Phone 8). But that doesn't mean those smartphones are at the end of the line. It's long been speculated that the reason Microsoft would want to restrict WP8 to new phones is primarily due to improvements in hardware support and the change in platform architecture, and this conjecture appears to be right on the money. After all, how can single-core devices with WVGA screens take advantage of multi-core and additional resolution support? That part makes sense, but that leaves the software side.

So here's the plan to ensure current Windows Phone users stay happy: a few software benefits will be included in WP8, and a hearty helping of these killer features (such as the new Start screen) will be available to legacy devices in the form of Windows Phone 7.8. There'll be support for three tile sizes, with the smallest being fingertip size (a quarter of the standard square). The update will be delivered directly to users, sidestepping carriers, and can be done over WiFi.

Update: While Microsoft was keen to announce that 7.x apps will run on Windows Phone 8, ZDNet has just confirmed, via a statement from Redmond, that apps built for the new platform won't be backwards compatible:

"New applications compiled specifically for Windows Phone 8 will not be made available for Windows Phone 7.x devices."

So how about that new "Twilight: Breaking Dawn- Part 2" trailer? Now that we've watched it a few dozen times, we can take a step back to analyze our favorite moments.

First, how great is it to finally get a glimpse of all those other vampires we've been talking about? Finally a first look at Garrett the nomad, played by the divine Lee Pace, as well as Benjamin, Irina and a few others.

But there's one character we wish we saw a little bit more of: Renesmee. Not that we blame Summit and Co. for waiting to reveal more of little Mackenzie Foy-as-Renesmee closer to the film's release, but it would have been nice to see her in action with her parents, interacting with the other Cullens or playing with Jacob.

The moments that we do get to see are very sweet. Fans around the world have been expressing their delight over one scene in particular: when Bella is putting her daughter to bed and tells her "I'll never let anybody hurt you."

"The way vampire Bella looks at Renesmee reminds me of Edwards quote from Twilight... 'You are my life now' :')," one Mackenzie Foy fan tweeted. A fellow fan called the moment "10 seconds of perfection."

In addition to the high praise from fans, that tender moment between mother and daughter has already been given the GIF treatment on several Tumblr blogs.

With all this love for the happy family and that precocious young lady Renesmee, we surely hope we'll get to see more of her in the next trailer.
