NEW YORK (AP) ? With the Triple Crown on the line, New York racing officials have imposed a strict set of rules for horses running in the Belmont Stakes, including out-of-competition blood testing and close scrutiny of the horses and humans attending them in the days leading up to the race.

I'll Have Another is bidding to become the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years at the Belmont on June 9. His California-based trainer, Doug O'Neill, has a history of doping infractions and was recently suspended for 45 days, although the punishment won't begin until after the Belmont.

The New York Times reported late Wednesday night that steps taken by the authorities also include a set of specific safeguards directed at O'Neill.

According to a confidential email obtained by the Times, O'Neill's horses cannot in any way be treated "without a board investigator present," and that he should not allow treatment of any of his horses "by mouth or in feed without conferring with a board investigator, who will first log the treatment and discuss the reason(s) for treatment."

The Times is also reporting O'Neill must provide veterinary records for I'll Have Another and any other horses he may be running over those days at Belmont "no later than 10 a.m." each day after any treatment.

A message left by The Associated Press on O'Neill's cellphone early Thursday morning was not immediately returned.

Neill told the Times he had not been notified of the rules that appear to be set out for him.

"I'll comply," he told the newspaper by phone. "I understand they are trying to protect the horse, the betting public and the integrity of the sport."

Starting next Wednesday, all horses entered in the Belmont will have to move into a secure stakes barn at the track until after the race is run. The horses will be required to have a blood test upon arriving at the barn, and it will be reviewed that night at the New York State Racing and Wagering Board's drug lab.

Limited numbers of people associated with a horse will be allowed to be in the stakes barn, including the licensed trainer, assistant trainer, veterinarian, groom, hot walker and owners. Anyone entering a horse's stall, in contact with a horse or working on the horse will have their entry and exit logged. The stakes barn will have 24-hour security.

"Millions of race fans from around the world will be witnessing a historic spectacle at New York's beautiful Belmont Park on June 9, and the Racing and Wagering Board will ensure that the race is run in a safe and fair manner," board chairman John D. Sabini said Wednesday.

Equipment, feed, and hay among other items will be searched and checked.

All veterinarians must provide written notice of intended treatment before they perform any treatment, and investigators will monitor all treatment and items used.

The day before the Belmont no vets will be allowed to treat horses without first making an appointment with investigators. On race day, treatment will only be allowed in case of emergency or by agreement with the stewards.

An individual?s level of narcissism is displayed not in how many Twitter followers they have, but is more closely correlated to how many Tweets they send about themselves, according to a study by Bruce C. McKinney, Lynne Kelly, & Robert L. Duran in the spring issue of Communications Research Reports, an academic journal. But on Facebook, the opposite holds true: Narcissism was directly correlated with the number of friends a person has on the social network, and not necessarily by the number of status updates they post about their personal lives.

?These findings suggest that Facebook is not dominated by narcissistic millennials, as some have proposed, although, consistent with previous research, those higher on narcissism appear to be driven to amass a larger number of Facebook friends,? the researchers wrote. ?Results suggest that Twitter may be the network of choice for narcissists, which may, in part, account for the substantially lower number of Twitter users, as compared to Facebook users.?

Smashed Broad Bean Dip with Fresh Mint, Garlic, Manchego and ...

This is just a quick and easy recipe that I wanted to share with you because it is perfect for this time of year. When you can?t be bothered to cook anything complicated but want something fresh and delicious to munch on. This is it.

I found the recipe in a pile of newspaper and magazine clippings that The Washer Up?s dad, Jim had sent me from England. He cuts anything food and drink related out of the Sunday papers and saves them up to send over. It? s very handy for keeping up with what?s going on over there.

The original recipe used 500 grammes of podded broad beans, I didn?t have anywhere near that many so I have adjusted it to suit. It?s one of those things where you can taste it as you go and add more garlic, lemon or mint to your taste.?

If you have young broad?beans that are still very small and bright green you can use them raw. If not you can blanch the podded?beans for two minutes then squeeze the bright green peas out of the pale jade skins and you?re good to go. I know that squeezing broad beans may sound boring bit it?s actually quite a therapeutic thing to do sitting outside in the early evening sipping a glass of mint tea or even a Mojito. It?s worth it just to see that beautiful bright green paste when you?ve done.

Smashed Broad Bean & Mint?Dip

Serves 2-3 as a snack, vegetarian, gluten-free. Adapted from Eat Your Veg

Prep time 15 mins

• about 200 gr broad beans (podded weight)
• 1/2 clove garlic
• 1 tsp salt
• 5 mint leaves
• 2 tbsp olive oil (or more)
• 50 gr grated manchego (or pecorino/parmesan)
• a squeeze of fresh lemon juice
• bread to serve, toasted flatbread/baguette/ciabatta or wholemeal toast

Blanch the broad beans (unless very young, tiny & bright green) for two minutes in boiling salted water, drain and then squeeze the bright green peas out of the pale green cases.

In a mortar & pestle, crush the garlic and 1/2 tsp salt to a paste. Add the mint leaves and pound again to a paste. Add a handful of the broad beans and grind to a paste.?Add more beans and continue pounding until you get a slightly chunky textured puree.

Drizzle in the olive oil and mix well then add the cheese, lemon juice and season with salt?and black pepper. Taste and adjust lemon, mint salt as necessary. Serve on/with toasted bread and drizzle with a little more olive oil.

Sit back and enjoy this fresh and delicious seasonal treat, I?m off to?make some more, it?s addictive. Thanks Jim.

So naturally, people are screaming about how the Eurozone is in turmoil and that people are fleeing the currency as some kind market vote on the likelihood of a collapse.

But there is an annoying thing that happens in media discussions of the Euro...

The Euro (currency) is seen as though it is a proxy for the stability and future of the Eurozone. And it is assumed that when it's going down, it means the Eurozone is closer to blowing up, and then when it's going up, it means the Eurozone is more likely to hold together.

But that's not really true, and we'll get to a bit of that later.

In the mean time, here's another version of the above chart, except this time in addition to the Euro (red line) we've added the price of Brent Crude Oil (blue line).

It's not perfect, but since at least the middle of 2010, the euro and the price of oil have moved very similarly.

Since 2011, the pair have almost been in lock step, and since the beginning of 2012, the euro and oil have been perfectly in lockstep.

This might seem odd that the Euro and oil would move so similarly. After all, unlike Canada (whose economy is quite tied to oil), Europe doesn't benefit when oil rises at all, and so at first blush it doesn't make much sense that the Euro should strengthen when oil prices go up.

But that's forgetting the way nature of the European Central Bank ECB.

The primary belief of the ECB -- as its chief reminded us this week -- is to keep prices stable. The ECB is obsessed with fighting inflation. Any kind of inflation. The ECB wants to beat back inflation at all costs, even if doing so may be economically detrimental.

That's why in early 2008, and early 2011 (two times when the price of oil boomed) the ECB raised rates even as their domestic economies were teetering.

As everyone knows (or should know) a hike in rates by a central bank tends to make the currency strengthen.

But while the ECB freaks out about oil prices, the Fed tends not to, as Bernanke prefers to look at more 'core' measures that strip out commodity volatility.

This was explained in a note by Citi's Jeremy Hale last year:

Oil prices have been positively correlated with EUR/USD for some time. One reason is the perceived asymmetric policy response by the ECB and Fed to higher oil prices, where the ECB typically responds more hawkishly. Another is that trade flows/ exports to the oil producers favour Europe over the US.

Another key reason he cites is that revenues from oil (accrued to Mideast oil producers) are frequently banked in Euros, creating upward pressure.

So when oil is rising, it's seen as more likely that the ECB will increase (or at least not loosen) monetary policy. And that makes the Euro strong. And when oil is dropping (as it has been lately) the odds that the ECB will cut rates goes up. And that makes the Euro weak.

Really, the idea that the Euro would be a proxy for the Eurozone is very dicey. If Greece were to leave, it's easy to imagine the Euro selling off in knee-jerk fashion, but it's not clear that the long-term path would be down. Furthermore, the crisis actually creates upward pressure on the euro because liquidity-parched banks have to repatriate funds from overseas and buy Euros to pay off their debts. Think about it, in a crisis, everybody needs to grab euros to pay the bills. That can actually be bullish for the currency.

It's just very murky trying to connect the currency and the zone.

So rather than seeing EUR/USD as some kind of proxy for the health of the Eurozone (which has been mess for a very long time) think of it as having to do more with the price of oil, and how the price of oil affects monetary policy and currency flows.

Finally, if you're still not convinced that oil is more important to the euro than the crisis tensions, check out this same chart going back to 1999, since long before anyone thought there might be a Eurozone crisis. The similar movement in the euro and oil is uncanny.

UPDATE:

Some people on Twitter and in the comments are pushing back, saying that this is just about the dollar and that it's almost a tautology that the euro and oil would trade together, since the denominator is the same.

There's certainly some of that, but here's a chart of the The Euro/the British Pound (red line) vs. oil (blue line). It's not perfect, but the correlation is still there.

Due to some interesting characteristics, the euro and the price of oil have a unique relationship.
