Is Flood Risk Really that Important? | NASDAQ Stock Exchange ...

?Currently, an estimated? that one in six properties in the Uk is within an area which is considered to be a flood risk..?? The Environmental? Agency data? on flood risk? show that out of these, 500,000 properties are located in areas that are considered as being a sizeable flood risk? (anticipated to rise to over 800,000 by 2035).?? The? two main reasons? for the rise in the areas regarded as being a flood risk area?? are? said to be? climate change and also the pressure on land use (particularly in the South East)? which means? that increasingly more new estates are now being built on flood plains- which are regarded as a major flood risk.

?Many householders are in for a rude awakening??

?The Statement of Principles

After horrendous floods in 2007,? the government came to an understanding with Insurance Providers, through the auspices of the Association of British Insurers (?ABI?),? whereby? the Insurance Companies agreed to continue to insure? properties in areas regarded as to be? flood risk areas? at ordinary market rate premiums and not make any rises in the premiums until 2013.?? To return the favour the government promised to? invest in strengthening flood defences in those flood risk areas.?? This was known as the ?Statement of Principals? and the intention was that the agreement could possibly be renewed in 2013.

According to the ABI, the promised government investment in flood defences? for? flood risk areas? has never materialised and in some cases the investment has been cut.??? If the government carries on along the same road there?s little or no chance that the Statement of Principals will be renewed.

What will this mean for your home if the area you live in is deemed to be a flood risk area?

If the Statement of Principles is not renewed by the ABI, around 200,000 homes? which are in flood risk areas ?could become uninsurable in just two years? time? whilst other home owners will face prohibitively expensive insurance premiums for merely sharing the same post code as the flood risk areas.

An uninsurable house is a house that?ll be extremely hard or else impossible to sell ? no mortgage company or bank will lend on it and if it can be sold, it?s going to sell for a price well below market value.

Currently there are indicators that insurance companies are already off-loading problem properties in flood risk areas or increasing the premiums and policy excesses.? Even today, certain Insurance Companies will not insure a home which is within 110 metres of water!?? The Home Or Property or the area doesn?t have to have had a past history of flooding in order for there to be difficulty in buying buildings insurance- it merely has to have been regarded as a flood risk area by the Environment Agency.?? An illustration is a dwelling which is eighty years old and has a fishing lake about 100 metres away behind.? Irrespective of there previously being no record of that area ever flooding ? 10% of insurance companies will not insure the home.

Presently there are people reporting that their house insurance has risen by two thirds? due to it being within an area considered to be a flood risk area, and they?re required to have excesses of around ?15,000 ? ?20,000.00

people in areas are deemed to be a flood risk area are beginning to struggle to find affordable insurance for their properties? and the situation will only get worse.

So, why do you have to be worried? ?

?Over the following two year period your buildings insurance policy is almost certainly going to increase greatly if you live in a area in danger of flooding- that is if you can aquire buildings insurance coverage at all!

If you cannot get buildings insurance ? you may not be able to sell your house and will as a result be unable to move or to remortgage or sell should you no longer be in a position to pay for the mortgage payments.? If you look to the value of your house to help keep you in old age ( and lots of people do), you may be in for a nasty suprise when you retire.

What You Can Do To Improve Your Home The Home Improvement ...

You should consider installing dormer windows to your attic if it?s large, and you want to make it more usable. Your home?s exterior will be more attractive, and your square footage may increase. In return for a modest cost, dormers make your home more livable and more valuable.

When performing home improvements in areas with heavy plumbing, (e.g. kitchens and bathrooms) replace ordinary wall board with water-resistant wall board. Water resistance is important to prevent dangerous molds from thriving within moist walls. ?Green board? is a product that is water resistant, and can prevent mold growth so is ideal for this purpose.

Take safety precautions prior to doing a home improvement job. Failing to do so might mean that you or a loved one are harmed, or severe damage is done to your home. Read the instruction manuals for your tools, and take advantage of any tutorials before starting any home improvement project.

If you require outdoor lighting, you should consider installing motion-activated lights. These will make your property more secure by letting you know if anyone has come onto your property after dark. Motion sensitive lights are extremely effective when it comes down to lowering your electric bill. This is because the lights, and therefore electricity, are only being used when needed.

If your space is limited, think about purchasing a small, stackable washer and dryer. These combo units are great space savers in apartments and homes with not a lot of extra space. A lot of combo units are as small as a dishwasher. The benefit of a combo unit is that it both washes and dries clothes within the single appliance.

Make ample use of your outdoor space. You can extend your living space right into the back yard. It will be perfect for relaxing or throwing a party with friends and family.

Many older homes are carpeted throughout, but decades of wear and tear, often leaves a stained, outdated mess. Hardwood floors always look fresh and are far more durable than carpeting.

Doing a little home improvement? When you want to personalize your space you can use things you already own to inspire you. Buy interesting frames that match your decor.

Using motion sensors on outdoor lighting is a good way to save money on energy. You can still turn the light on manually when you need to, and most models also let you fine tune the sensitivity.

When you are replacing the outside siding on your home ,stucco is a great alternative. Stucco is fairly easy to apply, although you may need to use forms. Whether you do the job yourself or hire a professional, your home?s new stucco exterior is going to retain its fresh, attractive appearance for many years to come.

Many older homes were constructed with only one bathroom. Have you though about how that would fit in your lifestyle? The property value of a house is definitely impacted by how many bathrooms it has. You can increase the worth of your home by adding one or more bathrooms.

A coat rack mounted on your wall is a nice way to display necklaces and other jewelry. Keep more expensive pieces of jewelry safely locked in a jewelry box, while displaying costume jewelry. Your jewelry will bring class and style to your room and you will enjoy being able to quickly select what you want to wear. Choose your most worn pieces and store them within easy reach.

Apply an asphalt search to keep your driveway from crumbling and cracking. The sun and wet weather can both damage your driveway, especially if water seeps into cracks, then freezes and thaws. Sealants help prevent damage from elements by providing protective layers and ensuring an extended life.

Talk to a realtor to learn which home improvements increase the resale value of a home. Normally, they have an idea how to target a certain audience.

Be sure to wear proper safety gear whenever you find yourself working around heavy equipment. You want to have gear, like a helmet and back harness. These are but some of the essential items you should have just in case any falling objects come your way.

If you want major work done to your house, hire someone who has plenty of experience. Designers, architects, and contractors have a reason for existing. The work is complicated, and they are professionals in their field. It may seem tempting and rewarding to tackle a big job yourself. However, by turning to the professional you will know that it will be completed properly from the start.

These tips should help you know what is possible with home improvement. With a little time, patience and the right equipment, you can remake your personal space into the home you have always dreamed of. If you learn to do your own home improvement, you can save money and make useful changes to your home, all while having fun.

The bloom isn't off this ancient plant

Fruit preserved more than 30,000 years in Siberia?s permafrost yields a living flower

Web edition : Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

A flower that last bloomed while mammoths walked the Earth has been reborn, regenerated from a piece of fruit frozen in Siberian permafrost.

It?s the oldest flowering plant ever grown from preserved tissue, Russian scientists report online February 21 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. David Gilichinsky, who led the team at the Russian Academy of Sciences? research institute in Pushchino, died just before the paper was released.

The fruit, radiocarbon-dated to about 31,800 years ago, came from a cache of provisions stuffed into a burrow by a squirrel. Windblown silt plugged the entrance to this storage chamber 38 meters underground. The burrow froze and remained frozen ? keeping its contents dry ? until the scientists excavated it. Tissue scraped from the fruit and bathed in nutrients grew into fertile plants with healthy seeds that sprouted in soil.

?It is remarkable that under deep freeze, fruit tissues ? can remain viable for such a long time,? says UCLA biologist Jane Shen-Miller. ?This is like regenerating a dinosaur from tissues of an ancient egg.?

At first the reconstituted plants, identified as the extant species Silene stenophylla, looked exactly like their modern relatives. But when flowers appeared, the white petals of the reborn plants were narrower and less separated than those of today?s representatives of the species.

Botanist Bengt Oxelman of the University of G?teborg in Sweden, an expert on Silene plants, says the regenerated specimens may actually belong to different, though closely related, species.

In any case, the hardiness of an ancient plant?s frozen tissue is good news for Norway?s Svalbard Global Seed Vault and other projects storing seeds on ice to safeguard against the extinction of modern plants. ?No one knows how long [frozen seeds] are viable for, but freezing is basically the format for all seed conservation attempts nowadays,? says Sarah Sallon, director of the Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Several years ago she helped grow a date palm from a 2,000-year-old seed unearthed in Israel.

Stop Being Crap Online: Is your business really ... - Social Media NZ

?

The social media forays of too many New Zealand business lie abandoned. This week Hannah looks at how they should have done the homework before jumping in.

?

When I moved back to New Zealand after three years abroad working in the internet technology sector, I didn?t quite know what to expect. Had online Aotearoa caught up with the rest of the world in my absence?

When I left, I didn?t have a Facebook account (let alone Twitter, YouTube etc etc), I had never made an online purchase, Internet marketing had barely entered my periphery (despite my advertising background), my home Internet connection was so slow and ?surfing? the web sounded like a slow and torturous death. That was pretty much the norm for the average Kiwi.

But a whole new world lay before me when I flew the coop, the whole world wide web, actually. It was all there, suddenly available, attainable, and filled with opportunity. It was a marketer?s dream and I couldn?t wait to see the impact this thing could have; with speed (finally) and a large, open-minded populace on its side.

Well, let me tell you. I?ve seen some things.

In my time away, my life and career had become one with the Internet, technology sinking its claws into every part of my existence. So omnipotent was its presence that I only realised how I took it, and its endless possibilities, for granted once it was gone.

In other words: once I moved back to New Zealand.

That is not to say that the country hasn?t progressed markedly since I left, which is amazing, considering the size of us. I was overjoyed to see the huge increase in things like ecommerce and online publishing. But it is hard to get used to checking into an entire town on Foursquare and finding other Kiwis on YouTube is still disproportionately exciting.

But I see we have all been busy with our social media, haven?t we?

While I?ve seen some awesome use cases of social media as a marketing tool for New Zealand businesses, I?ve seen some absolute shockers ? to the point where I?d question what the hell they were thinking getting on there in the first place.

Social media seems like an opportunity too good to miss. We?ve all seen everyone else jumping on the bandwagon, getting amazing results, and naturally, we want a piece of the pie.

But I?m starting to wonder if the average small business owner in New Zealand thinks that all they have to do is claim a Twitter handle, and watch the fans (cash) roll in.

I?ve seen too many Twitter accounts lying dormant with no more than five tweets to their names, Facebook fan pages with a meager collection of status updates from mid-2011 and even company blogs showcasing the ruins of a social media strategy that ?seemed like a good idea at the time?.

It is just a bit crap really. If you?re thinking about using social media to market your business in New Zealand, or you tried already and have since given up hope, check out the video below:

What?s your opinion? Do you think businesses should jump right in, or bide their time when it comes to social media?

PsyD Programs in San Diego | ArticleGoes - Free Dofollow Article ...

San Diego students with a master?s degree in psychology often have the desire to continue their education to the post-graduate level. The two post-graduate options for psychology students are PsyD and PhD programs. While both are post-graduate, doctoral-level programs, PhD programs will focus on research and the applied scientific aspects of psychology, while PsyD programs focus more on working directly with people.

The PsyD Alternative

Starting in the mid-60s, universities in California and across the country began to offer a PhD alternative to interested students. This degree became known as the Doctor of Psychology, or PsyD. PsyD programs in California are particularly popular as these programs are more on the therapeutic applications and practice of psychology. It is offered to students interested in learning how the principles of psychology can be applied to particular cases, which is why PsyD programs in San Diego focus on helping students get clinical experience.

In order to pursue an advanced degree in the field of psychology, a bachelor?s degree must have already been earned at an accredited institution. Not all schools require a student?s undergraduate degree be in psychology, but most do. It is important for potential students to understand the admissions and graduation requirements of their school before they apply, especially for an upper level program like a PsyD.

What Happens After a PsyD

After earning a PsyD in California, graduates may choose to pursue a variety of avenues both in the field of psychology and in other fields. New grads may choose to work in a counseling setting with children, families, individuals or groups. The PsyD allows professionals to choose to focus, as well. They may want to work with adults with disabilities or veterans returning from war. Psychologists may find work in hospitals, state or local governmental agencies, clinics or private practices. PsyD practitioners cannot prescribe any medication, but they can provide counseling and refer patients to medical doctors if they think medication may be in order.

Some students may find work in other, non-clinical fields. People with experience in all types of industries may benefit from a PsyD program. Human Resources professionals, for example, could benefit from learning conflict resolution in graduate school. Managers can benefit from PsyD studies, as well.

No matter what your goals are for your post-graduate psychology work in California, students who are interested in working with people can benefit from a PsyD degree from San Diego colleges.

FEMINIST HOUSEWIVES | HerCanberra

Can a housewife be a feminists?

I am a (mostly) loving mother, a (sometimes) caring wife and an always strong minded feminist.? I enjoy cooking for my family, begrudgingly do the majority of the housework, care for my children 90% of the time and still believe I am a feminist!

Here is how I see it:

Mothering needs to start being seen as a career.

NOT time off (a full time holiday); NOT?time out (watching TV and eating chocolate all day); NOT fill in time until they are at school; and NOT relax time for while they are at school.

It is a valuable and important contribution to society (it?s just that the pay sucks).

We, along with teachers and child career,s are moulding the future generation. This future generation will be changing your bed pans, writing the newspapers you read, and fixing your broken appliances when you are too old or sick or just off enjoying your retirement.

I don?t care if you bottle feed or breast feed, if you work or stay at home or do a bit of both. ?I don?t care if you use disposable nappies or dummies. I care about your motivation for these decisions.

I want you to care about your family and to weigh up your options with thought. ?If you work or stay at home and have not weighed it up, then you need to start thinking.?Ask yourself: What is best for you and your family?

An unhappy mother is a recipe for an unhappy family.? If your motivation to return to work is because you need this to feel happy, I personally think this is great.? It is better to recognise the problem and fix it instead of burying your feelings under resentment for your husband and children.

All mothers at some point have to decide if they will return to work or stay at home with their children.? Some mothers are not given a choice due to their circumstances.? Whatever your decision is, I ask you not to judge those who choose differently to you.

My role as a mother is to teach my son to respect women and treat them as equals.? This means teaching him to share in the housework along with everyone else.? He needs to see his mother and father sharing the load as well.? He needs to know his sisters are his equals.

For my daughters, I teach them they can be or do whatever they want regardless of their gender.? I teach them to respect all people including males, not to hate or despise them.

Our feminist foresisters were fighting for equal rights for women, equal pay, equal respect and a chance for women to reach their full potential.? This came about because women are not all round pegs to be put in the 1950?s housewife round peg holes.

Some women don?t want children at all, some don?t want to get married and some want to prove that they can make it in the business and political worlds.? There are others who are quiet content at home, giving their family their all.? ?All women are different and all careers (including motherhood) are different.? All women just want to reach their full potential.

If you are a working mother, this does not mean that you are automatically more driven than SAHM?s.? You are not smarter, stronger or more organised.

If you are a SAHM, this does not mean that your family is more important than working mothers.? You are not smarter, stronger or more organised.

Most women want RESPECT.? We want it when we work with males (what feminism is all about).? We also want respect from our sisters.? We want them to see that our decisions for our children and families were done with much debate and angst.

Please don?t judge me and I will try my best not to judge you.

Predictions about the future of Cloud Computing | Technology Blog ...

English: Cloud Computing

Image via Wikipedia

The Santa Clara Cloud Expo held in November 2011 was the ninth year of the annual industry event. It is difficult to believe that cloud computing technology has been around for so long, when it is constantly written up as being an emerging technology. Of course, the early e-mail services such as Hotmail were among the first practical applications of cloud computing. The 2011 Expo, however, signals that the technology has matured and new business models are evolving that could cause major changes to the IT industry as we have known it for the past 30 years.

Segmentation in cloud computing services

One significant trend identified at the Cloud Expo is that the cloud computing industry is segmenting into three distinct classes of service providers.

Infrastructure
Infrastructure providers are those companies which host the data and application servers, provide connectivity, manage firewalls and ensure data security. The acronym IaaS, (Infrastructure as a Service), is used to describe these services. Amazon Web Services is perhaps the largest at this time, but many new companies such as Rackspace, GoGrid and others are emerging with varying business models and price points to offer multiple options.

Platform

The computing platform space has the early movers Amazon EC2 and Google but is also likely to see the entry of software giants like Microsoft and SAP. The software platform would be customized to work seamlessly with the infrastructure provided by the IaaS companies, so that the applications hosted on them perform irrespective of the architecture of the host servers. The acronym PaaS (Platform as a Service) is used to describe this segment of cloud computing.

Software applications

This is the interface to the computer user. SaaS, (Software as a Service), is also termed as on-demand software. In the past, each computer user had to buy copies of licensed software for each application and then pay annual maintenance fees for upgrades and support, even if his usage of the software suite was only occasional. A good example is the Microsoft Office software suite that resides on millions of personal computers. With SaaS, the user can access the Microsoft office on the cloud and pay a small fee for his usage.

Most business software applications such as accounting, payroll processing, customer relationship management and the like are already designed for hosting on central in-company servers. These would now be hosted on cloud servers to enable even small and medium size companies to use expensive software suites like ERP on an affordable pay-per-use model.

With the growth in usage of social media, future software suites, especially those used for interface with the non-business users will need to be designed for a chat-like interface. Already, some internet based shopping portals are designed for this format.

Changes in the computer hardware and software industries

Cloud computing is poised to bring about disruptive changes in both the computer hardware and the software industries. The personal computer industry in the past 30 years has focused on the development of faster microprocessors, faster input-output systems, greater disk and flash memory storage and such silicon related advances.

In the cloud computing environment, the PC would only need a key board and display with some data storage capability. These would make the computers simpler and cheaper and make the product more of a commodity.

The other major change is the use of mobile phones and tablet computers to perform many of the functions that personal computers have been used for. Since the penetration of mobile phones is far greater than that of personal computers, the trend is that cloud computing could accelerate the demise of personal computers in the form that we know them.

The data display from business software applications may need to be tailored to the smaller screens of the portable devices.

The software industry, ranging from the simple Office application suites to the expensive analysis and design software, have traditionally depended on selling millions of copies of the software to multiple users and to then derive annuity revenues from maintenance and upkeep. With the pay-per-use feature of cloud computing, these companies will need to rethink their business models.

Data security issues

In mid-2011, the cyber attack on Sony Entertainment Corp.?s servers caused theft of personal data of several million PlayStation subscribers. The attack was mounted from a fake account created on an Amazon cloud computing platform and not by the conventional hacking process. The perpetrators of this cyber attack have not yet been tracked. Even if found, the legal penalties may be minuscule.

Large corporate computer users have reason to be concerned with the risk of such data theft. Cyber crimes can be carried out across international borders and there is virtually no legal remedy. A single rogue employee at a service provider can cause major losses to the corporate user. This risk has to be weighed against the enormous savings in buying and maintaining the IT infrastructure. It would be interesting to see how this issue gets addressed by the cloud computing industry.

The Cloud Expo 2011 certainly signals that cloud computing is set to transform information access and usage not just at our work place but also in our personal lives.

GM posts weaker- than-expected 4th-quarter (Reuters)

DETROIT (Reuters) ? General Motors Co (GM.N) posted a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter profit as disappointing performance overseas offset strong results in North America.

"We obviously have work to do still and a long way to get to the objectives we ultimately want to get to," GM Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann told reporters.

"We clearly have work to do in Europe. We have work to do in the South America business. Frankly, we have work to do all around the company in terms of cost opportunity," he added.

Ammann said GM has not gone far enough in cutting costs in its European operations, but declined to provide a 2012 financial forecast for a unit that the No. 1 U.S. automaker has struggled to return to profitability. Overall, GM expects 2012 sales to top the $150.3 billion it saw in 2011 and its market share to remain flat.

Net income attributable to common shareholders was $500 million, or 28 cents a share, compared with $500 million, or 31 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding one-time items, GM earned 39 cents a share, two cents below analysts' average forecast in a poll by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales in the quarter rose 3 percent to $38 billion, compared with the $38.21 billion analysts had expected.

For 2012, GM expects to raise vehicle prices and contain cost inflation, but the sale of more cars than trucks will hurt profit margins.

GM said its U.S. defined pension plans earned asset returns of 11.1 percent last year, but they ended the year $13.3 billion pension shortfall in pension funding compared with $11.5 billion in 2010. GM expects returns of 6.2 percent in 2012 due to a greater shift to fixed income investments.

GM's shares fell to $24.44 in premarket trading from Wednesday's closing price of $24.93 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Going Exotic ? Top 5 Unusual Pets | Exotic Pets

For some people, their love for animals goes beyond the usual cats, dogs and fish. Some like the exotic animals that would certainly raise some eyebrows. Exotic animals are great conversation starter no doubt, but notes that since most exotic pets not truly domesticated, they can injure people in your household, especially children. Take time to understand their nature more to raise and how to feed. Remember to spread the warning signs and provide this information to the rest of the family. If you have other pets in the house, you may need to be aware to protect these animals so that they are food for your exotic pet.

Finally, it?s become illegal to own certain exotic pets, so check to see the local state and federal laws, whether it is all right, a Burmese python, for example, own. With that out of the way, here are the top five exotic pet, you might want to consider:

First Chimpanzees. A native of Central Africa, chimpanzees are primates, which are supposed to be closest to the people regarding the duration of behavior, and life DNA. Chimpanzees are often highly intelligent animals who have skills in problem solving and can communicate through sounds, gestures and facial expressions. Although they can be good companions, they can also be very annoying. Like humans, they may throw tantrums, raid the fridge, cry, and throw feces at you. In the worst case, chimpanzees, with their upper body strength, is known to attack humans.

Second Bengal cats. Bengal cats are examples of a hybrid cross between a cat or house cat, and more exotic species such as lions and tigers. Hybrid cats are usually not a product of artificial insemination. Hybrid cats are popular because they resemble their wild counterparts, but they are very domesticated. Think of a tame tiger in your hands. One problem with hybrids is that some of them have health problems and more males are sterile. Most popular hybrid cats include Serengeti, Toyger cheetoh and cute.

Third Marsupials. Marsupials such as the Sugar Glider and stocky animals are muzzled wallaroos leading shaggy fur and native Australia. Sugar gliders have a lively and curious, and it helps them connect with the people, while wallaroos are more like a cross between kangaroos and wallabies. One of the challenges of caring for marsupials is their need for an environment similar to their natural habitats, which means that the vine and branches, they can climb. This becomes a problem for people who have wallaroos, because they tend to flee. Sugar gliders, on the other hand, tend to disturb you at night, when they are most active. They demand your attention. However, it can by any other aircraft in order to solve his company!

4th Snakes. Probably the most frightening of all pets are relatively easy to keep snakes and maintain. The snakes are the most popular pet pythons: Ball pythons, albino Burmese pythons and reticulated pythons. If you maintain Python, you would need a large tank with adequate moisture and high temperatures. Pythons adults tend to eat less, eat only every 10 to 14 days and pythons are generally satisfied with dead mice, gerbils, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits or chickens. Well, aside from Burmese pythons, which are known to the entire population of small animals to eradicate.

5th Alligators and crocodiles. Alligators are more favorable to be better than the crocodiles and their temperament usually. They are generally larger than the muzzle crocodile shows and fewer teeth than the crocodile. Note that the alligators are solitary creatures and are very territorial. They can live for 10 years.

Windows XP dropping connection to Windows 7 network share (mapped drive)

I have two Windows 7 Ultimate computers and around 10 Windows XP (Home and Professional, SP2 and SP3) computers trying to connect to it. It's just a LAN (no internet access).

I have set all of the password-protected sharing off on the Win 7 systems. I have tried opening up ALL of the permissions and such (since security is not really an issue).

The problem I'm having is this:

When I try to map the network drive, it won't let me merely connect to it. So, I have to click map network drive on the XP computer and hit "login with other credentials" and enter the username/pass for the user account on the Win 7 machine (we'll say Bob for user and Smith for password for the sake of example). It will mount the share (which is actually the C:\ root of the drive) just fine.

The only problem is the moment you restart the Windows XP system, it will lose the connection. My fix for it was to create a .bat file that contained the following:

net use S: /delete

net use S: \\Server1Win7\server1win7 Smith /USER:\Bob /PERSISTENT:YES

net use T: /delete

net use T: \\Server2Win7\server2win7 Smith /USER:\Bob /PERSISTENT:YES

I put it in the Progam Files\Startup folder to run upon boot. For the most part, it seems to work after a fashion. Some of the computers, though, will drop the connection to the two Windows 7 systems and need to be rebooted 1-2 times before they get it back again. Even clicking the .bat file manually will have the same result (you will have to reboot) if it drops the connection while you're using it. Plus, sometimes it doesn't map the drive correctly (I assume because the batch file is running before the connection has a chance to initialize on the LAN).

Any help would be much appreciated, as I am completely at a loss here. Any solution that would allow me to map the network share for both of them and it remain persistent would be wonderful.

PS - I've also tried adding an "Everybody" user to the permissions on the Win 7 systems with full access, but it only seemed to cause problems with the existing connections.

It might also be prudent to mention that both the Windows 7 and Windows XP systems are all 32 bit. I've also disabled the firewalls on the two Windows 7 systems. Neither of them have any antivirus or security software installed.

The Romney Victory in Maine Halts Santorum???s Momentum (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Despite winning the Maine caucus by the slightest of margins, the Mitt Romney camp should leave the state with satisfaction as the Republican race for presidential nomination goes on hiatus for 10 days until the next debate and over two weeks (February 28) until primaries in Arizona and Michigan. The Washington caucus takes place on March 3.

All of which is a warm-up -- a preamble -- to Super Tuesday (March 6), where seven states will hold primaries and an additional three will hold caucuses.

Maine results

Despite Romney's (39 percent) narrow victory over Ron Paul (36 percent), it is a much needed boost to the presidential hopeful's psyche and provides the opportunity for his supporters to regroup after decisive wins by Rick Santorum in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri this past week.

Neither Santorum nor Newt Gingrich actively campaigned in Maine, a state in the backyard of the Massachusetts governor.

However, Romney supporters must now scramble to repair the damage Santorum has inflicted over the past 10 or so days. Regardless of the source, most polls reflect Santorum closing within 10 percent of Romney in the popular vote, a stark contrast to where the two stood at the end of last year when Santorum was considered an afterthought.

Romney and conservatives

The root of Governor Romney's struggles continues to be his appeal to conservatives in the Republican Party. The more Santorum links him to big government and Obamacare, the more this message resonates with Republicans to the right. Additionally, Santorum has been considerably more outspoken and pointed to his criticism of the Obama Administration and its handle of the current healthcare mandate versus the Catholic Church.

It is a dangerous time for Romney but time much needed to assess his message. His campaign, at least for the moment, derailed Santorum by keeping him off the front covers of newspapers and web sites.

What to expect from Governor Romney

Leading up to the next debates, I would fully expect the Romney camp to hold few punches in their attacks on Santorum. However, they will need to proceed with caution. Until now, the accusations of Santorum on his support of earmarks have failed to gain positive momentum for the governor, and as the economy improves, his private enterprise experience loses its strong appeal as well.

Additionally, he cannot keep pace with Santorum on conservative social issues.

All of which should take us back to the agenda that made Romney the frontrunner in the first place -- electability.

Romney supporters need only look at recent history to get his campaign back in order. The message that Romney, and only Romney, can unite enough conservative Republicans and independents to topple President Obama come this November. It's this message that resonated with the masses. It's this message that makes him look most presidential.

This break is beneficial to Romney -- the man who must present himself convincingly as the next President of the United States.

US oil and gas M&A jumps in 2011 (AP)

NEW YORK ? Interest in U.S. energy companies spiked in 2011 as buyers clamored for more access to oil-rich layers of North American shale, a consulting and accounting firm said Wednesday.

PwC US, a division of PricewaterhouseCoopers International, said that the value of U.S. oil and gas mergers and acquisitions jumped 35 percent last year to $186.5 billion.

America's oil and gas sector has been a red-hot area for growth in the energy industry thanks to new drilling techniques such as hydraulic fracturing that allow companies to tap vast amounts of oil and natural gas trapped in underground layers of shale. Environmental concerns have yet to dampen industry interest in new drilling projects.

Steve Haffner, a Pittsburgh-based partner with PwC's energy practice said, "The industry continued to make a paradigm shift to shale in 2011."

Haffner said that investors are increasingly looking at the Utica shale region in the U.S. The Utica, located along the Appalachian Mountains, from Virginia to New York, is expected to be rich in oil, making drilling projects more profitable than shale fields that contain mostly natural gas.

U.S. oil prices jumped 19 percent from 2010 to 2011 to an annual average of $95.12 per barrel. They're expected to keep rising in 2012 as world demand hits a new record. Natural gas prices recently hit a 10-year low.

PwC said there were seven transactions in the Utica Shale that represented $6.7 billion in 2011, a jump from one deal in all of 2010, with a value of $178 million.

While deal making rose in the Utica Shale, it fell off somewhat in the Marcellus Shale, which also runs under New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. There were a total of 13 deals in the Marcellus Shale in 2011 worth $9.9 billion, compared to 22 deals that totaled $20.3 billion during 2010.

Rick Roberge, a principal with PwC's energy-information unit, said the level of deal making in the U.S. should "remain active in 2012, despite continuing economic uncertainty due to attractive commodity prices."

The PwC report also found that:

_The value of U.S. oil and gas mergers and acquisitions increased 89 percent in the final three months of 2011, when compared with the same part of 2010. There were 48 deals in all worth a combined $80.5 billion.

_Foreign companies announced 10 deals in the U.S. oil and gas sector in the fourth quarter. That's two less than the same part of 2010, but the deals were worth 48 percent more at $13.9 billion.

_Pipeline and storage deals made up the bulk of the deals, adding up to $48 billion in 2011. Deals involving the exploration and production of oil and gas totaled $24 billion; deals involving oilfield equipment totaled $4.5 billion; and deals involving refineries totaled $4.1 billion.
