Korallreven is dreaming wide awake | Julia Chan | Music | San ...
For dream-pop duo Korallreven, place is just a state of mind. Though they are based in Stockholm, Marcus Joons and Daniel Tj?der?s electronic music isn?t anchored to a specific locale.

Currently on a five-date U.S. tour, Korallreven performs at The Independent in San Francisco on Wednesday. Opening acts include local artists Giraffage and Finally Boys.
The dream of Korallreven was born in 2009. Joons had traveled to the Samoan Islands and returned home full of melodious ideas. Hooking up with old friend Tj?der ? also of Swedish band The Radio Dept. ? Joons began translating his feelings into music.
?We started right away,? vocalist Joons says. ?We went on to release one single and suddenly, we?re doing a U.S. tour. It?s surreal.?
That ?one single? ? ?Loved Up? ? only released in Sweden as an MP3 at the time, caught the attention of music vanguards and bloggers. Korallreven quickly found itself courted by a number of record labels.
?Everything has been happening so fast,? Joons says. ?It feels like we had record labels before we had songs.?
Boutique label Ac?phale Records was the winner, putting Korallreven in the diverse company of artists such as Salem, Pure X and Air France.
?Ac?phale reached out and asked, ?Do you have any more songs?? I lied and said yes,? Joons says.
The little white lie paid off. The Swedes? debut LP, ?An Album By Korallreven,? released in November 2011, is a blissful voyage through lush-sounding production and catchy instrumentals. Fluid melodies build amid tinkling acoustics and delicate vocals, giving way to modern compositions.
Joons claims the band is not so much influenced by other artists as it is by concepts. He cites influences from trance music to kola beans, and describes the creative process as being fairly abstract.
?It?s like one plus one is three,? Joons says. ?That?s kind of how we work.?
