Women's Day 2011 to offer tips on wellness, fitness and nutrition ...
FORT DRUM ? The Northern New York Rural Health Care Alliance?s third annual Women?s Day will offer tips for the busy woman to balance family, health and nutrition.
Alliance program manager Sandra L. Hazen said the event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Commons.
?I think that women don?t necessarily go out of the way for themselves,? she said. ?Here, they?ll have one day to do just that.?
Because attendees are asked to fill out program evaluation cards each year, Mrs. Hazen said, she learned the most-desired topic for this year?s event was healthy eating. Catherine M. Moore, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County?s nutrition and Fort Drum issues leader, will speak on that.
?I was hoping to talk about easy things, like it?s accessible and easier to grab an apple in a bowl on the table than some potato chips,? she said. ?Women tend to be the food gatekeeper of the family.?
Women?s roles tend to be frantic, she said, as they juggle responsibilities of work, their children?s education, home time, meals and more. Ms. Moore said her plan is to address those many hats women wear.
Other featured speakers include Nancy Swenson, an obstetrician-gynecologist nurse practitioner at Cape Vincent Family Health Center; Jessica Page, co-owner of Page Fitness; Debi Pettit, business adviser for CITEC, a nonprofit economic development organization in Potsdam, and Rebecca Mabry, financial center manager for AmeriCU Credit Union.
?It?s amazing the pull this event gets from the community,? Ms. Moore said. ?When women feel strong and healthy, it ensures they make healthy choices.?
Tickets are $35 each and include lunch and hourly chances to win door prizes. Checks may be made payable to Northern New York Rural Health Care Alliance. To register, call Mrs. Hazen at 755-2500 by Oct. 7.
